“One of the most stylish and spirited accounts of a Haydn quartet to come along in a while … the Danish String Quartet has secured a position as a significant ensemble. A new recording, which pairs Haydn’s Quartet in D and Brahms’s Quartet in A minor, makes clear why this fast-rising ensemble has been having such international success in recent seasons. Clemens Krauss: conductor

WAGNER: Der Ring des Nibelungen (complete opera)

A deluxe edition of one of the most beloved complete Opera d’Oro recordings! This new package contains newly translated complete English librettos for all four music dramas, along with a fifth book of essays.

“I will proceed to proclaim the 1953 Bayreuth Festival Ring conducted by Clemens Krauss the best on records … Hotter in his prime as Wotan, Wolfgang Windgassen in his first Bayreuth Siegfried … and Astrid Varnay as a womanly, impassioned Brunnhilde.

The rest of the cast, with minor exceptions, matches the competition point for point and easily surpasses all other Rings … The sound, remarkably solid and natural for a live recording of that era, favors the voices in a way that doesn’t slight the orchestra. But

what lifts this Ring to preeminence is the conducting of Clemens Krauss … Tempos move forward purposefully, on the whole, but without slighting the music’s mystery and tragedy. And the intensely dramatic and ecstatic moments, those great outbursts to

which Wagner rises with satisfying frequency, are delivered with blinding passion. Hear this Ring, and find out what this music, and Richard Wagner, are all about.” — John Rockwell, New York Times

TARTINI: Devil’s Trill • SCHUMANN: Sonata in D minor • plus works by Julias Röntgen & Karol Lipinski

“Intoxicating brilliance and immense panache.” — The Strad

A Violin’s Life traces the provenance and history of the “Lipinski” Strad, one of the most notable of the coveted string maker’s instruments, which are worth millions today. Crafted in 1715, the violin is named for Polish virtuoso Karol Lipinski, who played this instrument from c. 1818 until his death in 1861. Frank Almond, concertmaster of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, has played on the “Lipinski” Strad since 2008. Envisioning a project that chronicled the extraordinary history of this violin and its associations, he has made a recording that includes Tartini’s most famous work, the “Devil’s Trill” Sonata, as well as a virtuoso solo piece by Karol Lipinski, one of Julius Röntgen’s unjustly neglected violin sonatas, and the stupendous Sonata in D minor of Robert Schumann, certainly performed during their lifetimes with Schumann at the piano and Lipinski playing this very instrument. William Wolfram is Frank’s estimable accompanist.

After La Valse à mille temps, Jan Michiels and Inge Spinette return with a new two-piano program for Fuga Libera. This recording pays tribute to Bach, Bartók, and Kurtág, and also to two legendary piano duos: Dittá and Béla Bartók, and Márta and György Kurtág. The recording highlights the strength of the union of two minds, which — like Dittá and Béla Bartók, Márta and György Kurtág, and Inge Spinette and Jan Michiels — can phrase music with a rare degree of intensity and acuity.

“The glittering clarity of the Brentano’s sound is intoxicating.” — The Strad

“Brilliant, virtuosic, and still mellow … one of the great musical hopes of a field overcrowded with contenders.” — Los Angeles Times

Founded in 1992, the New York-based Brentano String Quartet is particularly recognized for their interpretations combining perfect technique with peerless musicality. Their previous release — also devoted to Beethoven’s late quartets, and named Editor’s Choice by Gramophone — served as the soundtrack for Yaron Zilberman’s film A Late Quartet, which featured a galaxy of stars including Philip

Seymour Hoffman and Christopher Walken.

SCHUBERT: Winterreise

“A robust bass voice and dignified presence.” — New York Times

“Utterly compelling.” — Opera Now

Stone Records is delighted to announce the release of Matthew Rose’s debut recital disc. Together with pianist Gary Matthewman, he performs Schubert’s masterpiece Winterreise. Rose, renowned for his performances at the world’s leading opera houses

(The Metropolitan, La Scala, Covent Gardent), is becoming one of the most sought-after basses of his generation. He has teamed up with rising star Matthewman, and together they worked on Winterreise over the course of several years prior to making this

recording. The result is one of the most dramatically thrilling and intelligently planned renditions of this great work!

The recording was made at the Snape Maltings near Aldeburgh in the UK, a suitably remote and inspiring location for such a piece. Superbly captured by award-winning producer Sébastien Chonion, the disc is presented in a collectible CD-sized hardback

booklet, with articles by Warwick Thompson and Susan Youens, full texts in German & English, and — as downloadable files on the CD itself — transposable sheet music for the entire work.

Funeral music for Queen Mary and Elizabeth I, by Purcell, Paisible, Tollett, Morley, Weelkes, and Tomkins

This recording assembles the music composed for the funeral of Queen Mary, and that used at the funeral of Elizabeth I in 1603. The program is completed by Purcell’s sublime a cappella anthems and a moving anthem by Weelkes on the death of Thomas Morley. After the success of the recording of Schütz’s Musicalische Exequien, voted Record of the Year by Gramophone magazine, this disc will be one of the major events of spring 2013!

“A master of musical subtlety.” — International Record Review

Gordon Ferries’ fifth solo disc for Delphian spans two centuries of music for kings and courtiers. Performing on four instruments matched to the periods in question, and captured in sumptuous recorded sound, Ferries takes in the chansons and elegant counterpoint of sixteenth-century France’s cultivated humanist courts and the exquisite melancholy and refined dance forms from the private chambers of Louis XIV’s Versailles, and investigates the place of guitar music at the heart of the decadence, sexual intrigue, and Baroque splendor of Charles II’s Restoration court.

Young violinist Nemanja Radulovic unites his fire and modernity with the supreme elegance of harpist Marielle Nordmann, as the unconventional pair offers a captivating program of sparkling delicacy and angelic music.

Isabelle van Keulen’s breakthrough came in 1984, when she won BBC Young Musician of the Year. The competition was broadcast all over Europe, and watched live on television by millions. Her versatility lies in the fact that she plays both the violin and the viola with the same energy, performing chamber music in all possible combinations and directing chamber orchestra performances. Her duo partner of 22 years is Ronald Brautigam, one of Holland’s most respected musicians, and their chemistry is immediately obvious! Brautigam has received numerous awards including the Dutch Music Prize and the 2010 MIDEM Classical Award for Best Concerto Recording.

WEINBERG: Quintet for piano, two violins, viola and cello in F minor, Op. 18 • Quartet No. 8 or two violins, viola and cello in C minor, Op. 66

The music of Mieczysław Weinberg is one of the most beautiful pages of unwritten music history of the 20th century. Now, Melodiya presents the best examples of Weinberg’s chamber music. His piano quintet, composed during WWII, and eighth quartet (1959), a one-movement piece filled with inner contrasts, unintentionally call up associations with Shostakovich’s brightest chamber opuses composed during the same years. Weinberg’s compositions are performed by the original lineup of the Borodin Quartet, an outstanding chamber ensemble. In the quintet, the author — who graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory — plays the piano!

J.S. BACH: The Art of Fugue

The Art of Fugue is a cycle of fugues and canons that can be rightfully considered the peak of J.S. Bach’s polyphonic mastery. Amazing thanks to its unsurpassed polyphonic technique, the work left a mass of mysteries and questions as to the author’s concept, its completeness, and the instruments on which it could be played. This album features the cycle as it was performed by Tatiana Nikolayeva, a recognized master of interpretation of Bach’s music. In 1950, then a young pianist, she became a winner of the International J.S. Bach Competition in Leipzig; Dmitri Shostakovich had composed a cycle of 24 preludes and fugues especially for her. Her performance of The Art of Fugue ranks among the best-known piano interpretations of this work.

BALAKIREV: Overture on the theme of a Spanish march for symphony orchestra • Overtures on the themes of three Russian songs • King Lear, music to the tragedy by William Shakespeare

Mily Alexeyevich Balakirev (1837–1910) was an outstanding Russian musician, pianist, conductor, and composer. Some of the most remarkable events in Russian music culture of the second half of the 19th century are linked with his name. Balakirev’s compositions for symphony orchestra, in which the musical and aesthetic principles inherited from Mikhail Glinka and Alexander Dargomyzhsky found their development, take a central place in his creative work. This program brings together seven symphonic works in chronological order, all performed by the outstanding Evgeny Svetlanov and the USSR State Academic Symphony Orchestra.

Melodiya presents a complete collection of symphonic heritage by Vasily Kalinnikov, an outstanding and rarely performed composer who combined various trends of 19th-century Russian art. Kalinnikov, who had to fight poverty and incurable disease for most of his short life, created music that was amazing in its lyrical spirituality, melodic richness, and epic power. This album features the composer’s two best-known symphonies as well as his earlier compositions, one-movement program works and experiments for drama theatre (music to Alexei Tolstoy’s play Tsar Boris).

RIMSKY-KORSAKOV: The Tsar’s Bride (an opera in four acts)

In 1849, translator, poet, and playwright Lev Mey (1822–1862) wrote a drama called The Tsar’s Bride, based on one of the passages from the era of Ivan the Terrible’s reign. In 1868, Mily Balakirev drew Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s attention to Mey’s work. However, the composer did not set to creating an opera based on the plot of The Tsar’s Bride until some 30 years later. Almost without changing Mey’s plot, Rimsky-Korsakov enhanced the dramatic qualities of The Tsar’s Bride with his musical means. The opera was premiered in Autumn 1899 at a Moscow theatre of the industrialist and patron Savva Mamontov, with Mikhail Ippolitov-Ivanov as conductor.

In March 1984, a fragile 12-year-old boy went onstage at the Big Hall of the Moscow Conservatory to perform Chopin’s two concerts with the Moscow Philharmonic Society Orchestra, conducted by Dmitri Kitaenko. His name became instantly known both in the USSR and overseas. From the very first performance, one could not help but feel a rare combination of almost mutually exclusive qualities: freshness and fascination of youth and very mature, conscious proficiency. Today, almost 30 years later, the recording of his first concert at the conservatory keeps that wonderful youthful fascination.

STRAVINSKY: Le baiser de la fée

Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale The Ice Maiden was taken as a basis for the libretto of Le baiser de la fée, a ballet that was ordered by Ida Rubinstein for her seasons. However, Stravinsky admitted that only some motifs were left from the Danish writer’s fairytale: the mother and her child lost in a blizzard, and the Fairy who marked the child with her magic kiss and then took him away to her miraculous world of eternal life. Using some themes from pieces by Tchaikovsky, Stravinsky dedicated his score to the great Russian composer. This CD presents a recording from 1966, made by the Great Symphony Orchestra of All-Union Radio and Television with conductor Gennady Rozhdestvensky.

KHACHATURIAN: Symphony No. 1 in E minor • Concerto-Rhapsody for cello

Aram Khachaturian’s music is a sort of chronicle of his time and his motherland; it is an enthusiastic tale of the life of his country, built right before the artist’s eyes. Symphony No. 1 (1934), dedicated to the 15th anniversary of Soviet Armenia, was the composer’s diploma thesis. The Concerto-Rhapsody for cello was written in a burst of inspiration in a free developing form similar to Chausson’s Poème and Ravel’s Gitana for violin. The composer found quite a rigid structure that connected the principle of rhapsodic development of music based on a free flight of fantasy with important elements of sonata style that add a clear logic of symphonic thinking to the whole.

SHCHEDRIN: The Sealed Angel

Melodiya presents one of the most significant choral works by modern composer Rodion Shchedrin, composed after Nikolai Leskov’s story The Sealed Angel. Shchedrin repeatedly worked in the choral genre; he was often attracted to religious plotlines and liturgical texts. And still, the choral music to The Sealed Angel has a special, personal imprint that reflects how the composer perceived Leskov, and Russian spirituality. “If the so-called Russian soul really exists, there’s no one who can answer this sacramental question better than Leskov,” Shchedrin wrote.

Melodiya presents an album featuring Grigory Ginsburg, a wonderful virtuoso pianist and one of the glorious representatives of the Russian piano school of the 20th century. Ginsburg’s name is now overshadowed by some of his better-known peers such as Emil Gilels, Sviatoslav Richter, Yakov Flier, and Stanislav Neuhaus. However, in his time in the 1930s–’50s, his concert performances entranced audiences and critics alike.

Melodiya presents recordings of the outstanding Soviet conductor Alexander Melik-Pashayev, whose performing career at the USSR Bolshoi Theatre lasted more than 30 years and made up a whole era in the life of the famous company. His numerous recordings of opera sets, including those awarded with prestigious foreign prizes such as Borodin’s Prince Igor, Prokofiev’s War and Peace, and Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, are very well known. He is less known as a symphony conductor, but Melik-Pashayev’s concerts with the Bolshoi orchestra were some of the brightest ones in Moscow’s eventful musical life. His repertoire included not only fragments from operas, but also symphonic and oratorio compositions by Beethoven, Verdi, Schubert, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Shostakovich, and Shebalin.

HUMPERDINCK: Königskinder

Engelbert Humperdinck, born in 1854, composed a total of 14 operas and musical comedies. Six of them are fairytale operas, of which one remained popular throughout the years: Hänsel und Gretel. The shadow of this major success hides his other works, which deserve an equal share of appreciation for their quality; for example, Königskinder. The trio of the main protagonists is the same: an evil witch and two young people who are introduced to the seriousness of life through several severe tests. However, while Hänsel und Gretel features a happy ending, Königskinder ends in tragedy; the grief is elaborately reflected in Humperdinck‘s composition.

opera d’oro

Luciano Pavarotti: tenor

Music from Verdi, Bellini, Donizetti, Giordano, Tosta, Sibella, Puccini, and Massenet

In modern times, “superstar” status for an opera singer is unusual. Not so in the 19th century, when opera singers were commonly accorded the adulation reserved for rock stars today. Luciano Pavarotti’s numerous appearances on television, both in operas and commercials, as well as his sharing the stage with major pop singers, the huge arena performances of “the three tenors” (along with Plácido Domingo and José Carreras), and performances at other mass venues made him a true “superstar” equal to, or even greater than, many of pop music’s biggest stars. This disc surveys the breadth and depth of Pavarotti’s recordings of opera and song over the decades.

Luciano Pavarotti: tenor

Music from Puccini, Verdi, Donizetti, Bellini, Mozart, and Massenet

The career of Luciano Pavarotti spanned 45 years, one of the longest careers of any operatic singer. His debut took place in Italy in Puccini’s La bohème in April 1961, and this remained one of his signature roles throughout his life. Later that same year, he made his first appearance in Verdi’s La traviata. The next year, in Palermo, he first sang the Duke in another Verdi masterpiece, Rigoletto. The single performance, however, that propelled Pavarotti into world fame was at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1972, when he sang the role of Tonio in Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment (La fille du régiment). The nine brilliant high Cs that he effortlessly emitted in the single aria “Ah, mes amis” brought down the house, and earned him the nickname he would carry ever after: “King of the High Cs.”

opera d’oro

Luciano Pavarotti: tenor

Music from Puccini, Bellini, Donizetti, Verdi, Tosti, and Massenet

A survey of hundreds of popular and classical song titles throughout the centuries shows that love is by far the leading theme of vocal music. Yet only one track on this album is technically a love song: Tosti’s “L’ultima canzone.” The rest are arias, the operatic equivalent of the love song. Luciano Pavarotti made his professional debut in Puccini’s La bohème, and this remained probably his most famous signature role for the rest of his long career. Rodolfo sings tenderly to Mimì “O soave fanciulla” (“O gentle girl, o sweet face bathed in soft moonlight, in you I see the dream I have dreamed forever”). Can you get more romantic? Some of opera’s great lovers are here, including the Duke from Verdi’s Rigoletto, who starts out as a callous seducer and ends up a gibbering jellyfish, madly in love with the lady he kidnapped for sport.

Luciano Pavarotti: tenor

Music from DeCurtis, Tosta, De Crescenzo, Bixio, Buzzi Peccia, Lazzaro, and Donizetti

The Neapolitan song is a specific genre of classical vocal music with a distinctive style that, once heard, is never forgotten. It originated officially at a music festival in Naples, Italy, in 1835 but reached its international heyday in the early 20th century when the great tenor Enrico Caruso, himself a native of Naples, sang Neapolitan songs as encores to many of his opera recitals. Since then almost every famous tenor has continued the Caruso tradition, and in modern times almost everyone has left an album of Neapolitan songs along with their operatic recordings. Naturally, Pavarotti did also, and these short songs with their direct emotional impact, usually full of sweet nostalgia and a touch of melancholy, graced virtually every vocal recital he ever gave.

Trio Alba

MENDELSSOHN: Piano Trios, Op. 49 & 66

Chamber music instead of Carnegie Hall! It must have been a great creative urge indeed that compelled Felix Mendelssohn to compose his second piano trio while turning down a conducting invitation to New York — and the result explains just what was at stake here. Beginning with a sweeping symphonic dimension in the first movement, the mighty work builds up to a finale in which quite significant questions are posed, and on this sparkling debut CD the Alba Trio offers refreshingly sophisticated answers to them.

HALLGRÍMSSON: Notes from a Diary, Op. 33 • BRITTEN: Lachrymae

On his work Notes from a Diary, Hafliði Hallgrímsson says: “During a visit to Amsterdam some years ago, I found myself standing by a dark window covered in grey dense material in a house, No. 263 in Prinsengracht, where Ann Frank and her family hid from the Nazis for two years during the Second World War. Standing by the window in this environment and what it represented was strangely muted. Suddenly a large bell was struck in the Westertoren Church nearby and the deep resonance emanating from that bell shook me profoundly for a split second. So this was the sound that Ann found reassuring; I was for a few moments painfully aware of the terrible fate. When I started to work on a composition for viola and piano, the experience in the Ann Frank Museum became more and more the magnet that shaped the musical character of the work.”

For this disc, Hafliði Hallgrímsson asked the performers to perform Britten’s Lachrymae to accompany his own Notes from a Diary — an appropriate choice, as this year we celebrate Britten’s 100th birthday!

NARDINI: Six Sonatas for two German flutes and a bass

The works for flute by Pietro Nardini (1722–1793) are currently the focus of a renewed interest by all experts in this field. The most recent acquisitions have, in fact, allowed a correct appraisal of a body of instrumental work of interest and charm, which can thus compete with the better known and more often performed violin repertoire by Giuseppe Tartini’s most famous pupil.

Marin MARAISCharivary: Music from the Third Book of Viol Pieces

Philippe Pierlot, Rainer Zipperling: bass viol/Maude Gratton: harpsichord/Eduardo Egüez: theorbo, guitar

MARAIS: Suite in D • Suite in C • Suite in A

Marin Marais’ Third Book of Viol Pieces is an important milestone in his production: the suites are perfectly well ordered and the art of the violist is at its peak. This first volume devoted to the “Third Book” contains three suites based on the classical dance forms, completed by a few character pieces such as “La Musette,” “La Guitare,” and the famous “Charivary.”

Giovanna Pessi & Eduardo EgüezLiquide perle: Music for harp and theorbo

Giovanna Pessi: harp/Eduardo Egüez: theorbo, guitar

A compilation of toccatas, dances, improvisations, and variations on popular tunes composed by Frescobaldi and Anonymous composers, written for the harp and theorbo

The pieces presented here were chosen from the collection of a Roman manuscript from the first half of the 17th century known as the “Chigi manuscript.” By nature multiple and sometimes sketched, these pieces reflect an art of improvisation as a natural practice for musicians of that time.

LEVENS: Te Deum • Deus Noster Refugium

At the beginning of the reign of King Louis XV, the French provincial music scene gained more prominence thanks to its bustling theatres, “Académies,” and regional choir schools. Compositions by provincial music masters, such as Charles Levens’ Grands Motets, were included in the repertoire of the “Concerts parisiens” and the Royal Chapel at Versailles.

Helga Schauerte: organ

A collection of early organ pieces predating and leading up to the compositions of J.S. Bach

The Kloster Oelinghausen (in the town of Arnsberg, Westphalia), which was founded in 1174 by the order of the Premontarians, is one of the Meccas of the sacred art and music of the Sauerland. While the altar and the organ are a unique ensemble of baroque style in the interior of the abbey church, the chapel also houses several treasures of Gothic religious art such as the Virgin, called “Madonna of Cologne,” which dates from the first decades of the 13th century. The music presented on this wonderful CD is in harmony with the beauty and the spirituality of this exceptional site.

WAGEMANS: Legende

The original version of Legende was created as three acts, each approximately 55 minutes long, with two intervals. The version produced by De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam, recorded here, differs from the original in that substantial cuts have been made; however, Act 1 is almost complete, lacking only a short aria for Ursula and Pontus.

Reinbert de Leeuw: violin/Vera Beths: violin

LISTZ: Via Crucis • La Notte

Via Crucis is one of Reinbert de Leeuw’s favorite pieces. In an interview in 2002, he said that the “A in the Fourth Station was the most beautiful note” in the history of music. In that same year, he performed for the first time the solo piano version that he would go on to feature more often in recitals. On this CD he combines that piece with La notte, in a performance with his usual violinist partner Vera Beths.
