In the month of November The Holy Father asks us to pray for Dialogue and Reconciliation in the Near East. That a spirit of dialogue, encounter, and reconciliation emerge in the Near East, where diverse religious communities share their lives together.

articles of the Church of England; he was accused by anti-Catholic bigots of being insincere in his interpretation of the Truth. Newman’s early years as a Catholic were also beset by failures and disappointments; there was opposition to his founding of the Catholic University of Ireland, and the British government refused to validate the university’s degrees. However, success eventually came in Newman’s lifetime in the form of elevation to the College of Cardinals, and now, in our lifetime, in his canonisation.

Fourteenth Article onSt John Henry Newman

Fr Ian Ker recently described how Newman saw his own life as one of disappointments, sorrows and anxieties. Newman’s journey to sainthood was not an easy one. He underperformed as an undergraduate; he forfeited his role as tutor at Oriel College because of changes he proposed to teaching methods; he was condemned by heads of colleges and Anglican bishops because of his Catholic interpretations of the Thirty-Nine

Month of Prayer for the DepartedNovember is traditionally the month when we pray - most particularly by offering the Sacrifice of the Mass - for our departed loved ones; these are the Holy Souls in purgatory who await the glory of heaven. Periodically, throughout November, Mass will be offered for the Holy Souls. You might also like to have Mass offered for a number of your departed loved ones; whilst the date of the Mass is not known you can be sure that one Mass is offered for each list.• There are the All Souls November Envelopes available in the narthex of the Church for such a Mass; a voluntary financial offering may be made, used for the mission of the parish (not a gift for the Priest offering the Mass).

• Add a prayer card to one or more of our three petition boxes: Divine Mercy Jesus, Our Lady of Guadalupe and St John Henry Newman. The prayer cards are never read. Mass is offered for these private intentions every month.• Add a coloured ‘heart’ to the display-board in the narthex; each ‘heart’ might represent one person, several family members or a group of friends. Please feel free to add as many hearts as you would like throughout this month. Hopefully by the end of November the whole display-board will be awash with coloured hearts representing those whom we love but see no longer. Mass will be offered for these departed souls on Saturday, 30th November. However you choose to commemorate your departed loved ones this month, be assured that they will be remembered privately in prayer by Fr Wayne and prayed for each day at Morning Prayer by the parish.

First Holy Communion candidates and Intercessory petition cards to St John Henry Newman. Well done to all concerned!THANK YOU to all who participated• In any way in the Extraordinary Month of Mission! We extend our particular thanks to those adults who agreed that their photograph could appear on the Missio and diocesan Twitter feeds. Among our young parishioners we congratulate Daniel at HC who was a true witness to the Catholic Faith in such a marvellous way in his school!• In a myriad of ways in our celebration of the Canonisation of St John Henry Newman; most recently those who attended the Votive Mass and documentary presentation.• In Holy Day of Obligation Masses for All Saints Day. It truly was Fun, Food and Fireworks at the Family Vigil Mass. Well done to Stephanie, our Catholic Youth Minister, and organising team (including musicians) for a truly wonderful celebration and observance of All Hallows’ Eve! Lots of laughter from both children and adults could be heard coming from the Parish Hall whilst several parents (including visitors) commented on how much they appreciated the evening. As one visitor said: “It was the light of Jesus in a dark world on a particularly dark night.” The whole team really deserve our appreciation; well done them!• In the All Souls Day Requiem Mass.

Visit of the National Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima (with the Relics of Ss Jacinta and Francisco Marto) to SsP&J on Saturday, 7th December. This is an immense honour for our community and volunteers are sought to help with the organisation of this event; please speak with Fr Wayne if you would like to be a member of the planning committee for this celebration. All parishioners are asked to pray for God's blessing upon this important event in the life of our community.

Bedford Foodbank - Tesco Food Collection - 21st to 23rd NovemberWe need volunteers to help with the Tesco food collection on Thursday, 21st, Friday, 22nd (afternoons) and Saturday, 23rd November (all day). The collection is at both Tesco stores in Bedford. Can you spare one or two hours to join the collection? The foodbank is currently giving out over six tonnes of food every month to those in food crisis in Bedford and we need this Tesco collection to be a success in order to continue this vital work. Volunteers only stand at the supermarket door and hand out suggested shopping lists to Tesco shoppers, inviting them to buy one or two items in store and donate into our collection box. Volunteers are supported by an experienced collection supervisor to field questions. CAN YOU HELP? Contact: (01234) 268569, [email protected] for details.

Shoebox Appeal: Samaritan’s Purse - Operation Christmas ChildThe Appeal has been running for a few weeks now. You may also make a donation to cover transport costs. Collection next Sunday, 10th November.
