The Allied tube advantage

Allied tube has numerous inherent advantages over hot dipped galvanized products and while your fabrication necessitates some hot dipped components I believe that these advantages make it a viable option to your current method of using black steel and hot dipping.

Reduced cost - I believe that the cost of our galvanized tube over the cost of hot dipping is in itself an advantage that merits consideration. Even on a direct cost comparison this can be significant but when considering reduced shipping and handling costs the savings can be compounded

Custom Products - Allied supplies OEM manufacturers with custom cut and manufactured tube. A simple option such as custom cut lengths can represent additional saving in material and labour. (Dropping as little as 1’ off of a 21’ length of tube can amount to 5% wastage. This combined with the cost of cutting can add immeasurably to your cost of manufacturing. Additionally services such as dedimpled ends can enable you to swage lengths together seamlessly without having to trim end pieces. Not all hot dipped pipe is dedimpled.

Fabrication - The swaging of tube for single arch structures would be much easier and more consistent with Allied tube due to the uniform coating. There would be no fears about swages not fitting properly or too tightly and assembly would be improved.

Reduced cover wear – Allied tube because of its ultra smooth coatings is proven to reduce the wear on and increase the life span of covers on fabric shelters. That is why it is the tube of choice for most fabric manufacturers in North America

Appearance – Allied tube is known for it smooth, shiny appearance. Perhaps more importantly the combination of our coatings ensures the longevity of this appearance over a long period of time. It resists traditional graying down that is common with hot dipped products

Formability - Allied products can be readily bent without compromising the coating of the tube. Hot dipped tube tends to crack with bending and these cracks compromise the coatings performance over time. In addition the consistence of our tube strength ensures more consistent bending properties, piece-by-piece, bundle-by-bundle

High strength – Allied tube is a high strength structural tube that offers 50,000 psi yield. This makes it structurally stronger than commercial hot dipped tubing and many times allows for the use of lighter wall options without compromising strength.

Strength options – with truckload orders we can provide an even higher strength 55,000 Yield and 60,000 tensile tube for only pennies more per foot. This allows you greater flexibility in the spacing of arches and reduces further your frame costs.

Page 3: Allied Gatorshield spec sheet, ZRC spec sheet and B117 ......B117 Salt Spray Test Results . The Allied tube advantage Allied tube has numerous inherent advantages over hot dipped galvanized

Painting options – should you require it, for special applications or to meet the aesthetic needs of higher end buildings, Allied Tube can be readily painted and powder coated. This is not feasible with Hot dipped tube.

Many times the advantages are perceived to be undervalued when the limitations or concerns about using pregalvanized tube are considered. However these concerns can often be overcome. I would like to address your concerns about welding and remetalizing.

Welding issues – Allied tube is among the safest galvanized tubing products in the market to weld. Our lighter coatings reduce significantly the amount of zinc that is expelled from the tube during welding and our pure coatings all but eliminate the potential for lead contamination. In addition the zinc coating on our tube contains only trace amounts of lead (unlike hot dipped products that contain up to .5% lead)

Remetalization - It is true that once welded the zinc coating is removed around the weld area. The low vaporization point of zinc means that this is burnt off. However there are two methods that are commonly used to remetalize these components and areas. They include a cold galvanizing compound (ZRC or similar product) that can be a more than acceptable color match to our tube and is recognized as equivalent to hot dipping by underwriter’s laboratories.

GATORSHIELD®

LAYERS OF PROTECTION

Gatorshield® steel tubing is the standard of excellence and product

of choice for fabric covered structures. One of the most critical

components of a fabric covered shelter is the structural framework.

No other tube on the market can offer the strength, corrosion

protection and formability of Gatorshield®. Our tube meets the yield,

tensile, elongation and wall thickness requirements for ASTM A500

Grade C structural tubing which meet the engineering requirements

of the A660 Canadian Building Code for fabric covered structures.

GATORSHIELD®PRE-GALVANIZED /

GALVALUMEHOT-DIP GALVANIZED (HDG)

RAW/BLACK PAINTED TUBE

Fabrication

The composition and controlled thickness of Gatorshield® allows the tube to undergo severe fabrication without flaking the zinc coating

Manufacturing process can cause small blisters which can result in surface defects in powder coating and flake in fabrication. Top coating, if offered, is also subject to cracking during fabrication.

The inherent alloy compositions and configurations of HDG make it hard and brittle. Severe fractures can occur during fabrication and can cause the zinc coating to flake

Can be readily fabricated

AppearanceSmooth, shiny coating that will prevent premature tarp wear

Poor coating coverage can lead to dull or inferior aesthetic appearance. If supplied as galvalume aluminum, very visibly inherent issue as it transfers to the often white cover as black rub marks.

The surface of HDG has a “frost-flower” or “spangled” pattern. It quickly oxidizes or “grays down” and white rust rapidly forms. Rough surface increases tarp wear.

Appearance can be very good initially, but any exposed surface damage will cause rapid rust formation

Corrosion Protection

Superior triple coating protection covering 100% on the inside (ID) and outside diameter (OD)

Does not offer full coverage due to bare ID weld seam and varying metalizing process. Only two layers of protection on the OD.

Good anode cathode corrosion protection that is dependent on coating thickness and uniformity.

Paint inhibits corrosion on OD but not the ID. The coating leaves the inside exposed to premature rust. Outside rusts rapidly when damaged.

PaintabilityThe clear top coat makes it easy to paint with minimal cleaning

Requires special surface treatment before the application of paints or powder coatings; otherwise, proper adhesion is not obtained

Cannot be readily paintedwithout etching

Must be cleaned to SP1 (sand-blasted) to be properly coated. Lack of proper preparation reduces lifespan

Strength

Minimum 50,000* psi yield strength and 55,000* psi tensile strength provide the ultimate in structural integrity

Offers only "target" yield and tensile strength, traditionally not A 500 C

Variable strength parametersdepending on steel used, yield strengths can range from36,000 to 50,000 psi

Strength parameters vary because most available commercial tube is non-structural

*Applicable to products 15 gauge and heavier

SIX What About Painting ofPowder Coating Over Gatorshield®

Triple Coat Finish?

It’s easy to paint or powder coat over our galvanizedsteel tubing.

Simple surface cleaning of the tube is required due tonormal transportation and storage related accumulatedsoils. Merely wipe off such soils with a mild cleaningsolution.

Our galvanized steel tube coatings will also withstandin-line chemical cleaning baths and rinses. At the sametime, our coatings will not damage or contaminate anypart of your cleaning system.

Allied's galvanized tube products are protected by aclear, organic top coating which provides excellent ad-hesion properties to most thermo-set powder coatings,as well as to the following air dry and bake topcoats:

• High bake thermoset acrylic• High bake alkyd• High bake polyester• Two-part urethane or epoxy• Solvent-based paints for metals• Solvent-based paints for wood• Solvent-based high-solids paints• Oil-based paints• Paints for car bodies or appliances

As you can see, almost all powder or liquid paints willwork well over our clear topcoat. If the paint/powdercoating you are using does not fall into one of the above categories, or you have any questions, please contact Allied's Mechanical Tube Division for more specific information.

SEVEN What About WeldingGatorshield®?

Gatorshield’s zinc coated finish welds quickly and eas-ily under normal working conditions and utilizing pre-scribed welding procedures. Allied’s galvanizingprocess utilizes a 99.99% pure zinc alloy with signifi-cantly less harmful lead content than generallyencountered with pregalvanized tube and hot-dippedSchedule 40 products. This means that the lead oxidefumes generated duringwelding are kept to anabsolute minimum.

When weldingany galvanizedtubing, it isimportant to restorethe corrosion resistanceof the weld zone to that ofthe surrounding tube area. This is easily accomplishedby using Allied's customtouch-up paint, which hasbeen specifically developedfor this purpose, and is available directly from Allied.

If you would like morein-depth information onwelding galvanized steeltubing, or the variousmethods of restoringcorrosion resistance toweld areas, pleasecontact your salesrepresentative fora copy of Allied'sWelding & PaintingGuidelines.

Steel Tube Product as itRelates to ASTM Standards?

EIGHT What About ThreadingGatorshield®?

On 15 gauge and heavier products, in all popular pipesizes, standard threading procedures apply.

With lighter-gauge tubing, the threading tolerancesmust be proportionately modified. For detailed thread-ing procedures, please see Allied's Galvanized SteelTubing Threading Guidelines. They are available fromyour local sales representative, or call the MechanicalTube Division at (800) 882-5543.

Page 11: Allied Gatorshield spec sheet, ZRC spec sheet and B117 ......B117 Salt Spray Test Results . The Allied tube advantage Allied tube has numerous inherent advantages over hot dipped galvanized

Allied's 50/55® significantly outperforms galvanizedSchedule 40 pipe, gauge for gauge, in every way…andweighs at least 31% less (OD/OD) in popular pipe sizes.

TEN How Does Gatorshield®

Perform Vs. Schedule40 Pipe?

Let’s compare the results of documented tests:

Galvanized Allied’sSchedule 40 50/55 with

Pipe (ASTM-A-53) Gatorshield

35,300 psi pulling force-Pipe begins to yield Unchanged

56,200 psi pulling force-Pipe fractures Unchanged

58,840 psi pulling force-Tube begins to yield

Allied guarantees minimumyield strength of 50,000psi…55,000 tensile strength(fracture point). Yet the testresults show that Allied's50/55® with Gatorshield® yieldpoint was 17% greater than theguaranteed minimum. The gal-vanized Schedule 40 pipe, how-ever, fractured at 56,200 psipulling force.

And when compared with alu-minum pipe, 50/55's superiorstrength characteristics are evenmore dramatic, with an average60% greater load carryingcapacity in tension.

Plus, Gatorshield offers theadded benefits of easier, morereliable welding, increasedstructural rigidity, greater impactresistance and substantiallylower material cost than withaluminum Schedule 40 pipe.

Omit coating of surfaces to be welded in the field.7. Material partially used at the end of any day shall be protected from skinning by placingthin blanket of solvent over remaining coating followed by careful closing of containers. Coating may be reused on the following day after total rehomogenization.

ASTM B117 Accelerated Salt Spray Test

The left truss member is Allied Gatorshield. The right is a hot dipped truss. Both were placed in an excelerated salt spray test. As you can see both are showing white and red rust on the exterior. However the interior of the Allied product in virtually in pristine condition (even at the weld location). Hot dip structures require drain holes to drain the zinc out and is susceptible to moisture and corrosive dust and gases to settle in the pipe causing it to rust unseen from the inside out. The Allied Gatorshield pipe does not require drain holes and is therefore a closed pipe not allowing moisture, gases and dust on the inside.

Please note the concerned interior weld location on the Allied product. Showing little to no compromise to the structure.
