FRONT WHEELS

SPINDLE NUT

OUTER BEARING CUP

REMOVAL

Remove weight from front wheels. The wheel may be r~ved from hub if preferred. Remove the wheel hub cap. Remove cotter pin. Back off the adjusting nut until only two or three threads are holding, then pull or bump wheel hub outward until the outer bearing cone contacts adjusting nut. then it will be free of spindle. Remove nut. washer. and outer bearing cone. and slide wheel and hub from spindle.

In some instances the inner bearing cone will be tight on spindle and will not be removed with hub. In such cases the inner bearing cone must be pulled or driven from spindle. then remove bearing retainerl felt washer, spacer and the felt seal retaining washer. The inner bearing spacer and felt seal retaining washer is not used on roll shift front axle equipped tractors.

In other instances the inner bearing cone will be a looser fit on spindle and will be removed with wheel hub. In this case the inner bearing cone must be driven from hub driving out the bearing retainer. Drive out the bearing cups if worn or rough. Clean the inside of the hub thoroughly. Always use new felt seals saturated in oil.

ASSEMBLY (Front Wheels)

Install the felt retaiIring washer and inner bearing spacer in place over spindle. (This washer and spacer is not used on roll shift front axle equipped tractors.) Soak felt seal in oil or grease before installing. This will tend to make the seal more resistant to moisture and dirt. Place the felt seal in place on spindle.

FRONT SUPPORT PEDESTAL

REMOVAL

Support front end of tractor to where the wheels clear the floor. Remove wheels and wheel hubs if necessary. Remove the caps crews attaching pedestal to front support housing and remove pedestal from housing. A splined coupling is attached to pedestal assembly, and will disengage from steering shaft when pedestal is lowered from housing.

Remove capscrew retaining splined coupling to spindle shaft, and remove capscrew and washer. If bearing adjustment is necessary shims may be removed to tighten bearings. Add shims if bearings are too tight and binding.

To replace the lower steering shaft bearing or oil seal, remove the splined collar and pull spindle assembly from pedestal housing. If the bearing cone is tight on spindle the oil seal and bearing cone will be removed with spindle shaft. Pull bearing cone from spindle shaft, drive cap'from pedestal housing.

If the bearing cone is not tight on shaft, the spindle assembly may be removed, leaving the oil seal and beariDg cone in housing. IIi. this case, drive the bearing cone from pedestal thus removing the oil seal. Drive bearing cup from pedestal housing. Always replace oil seals when disassembling, replace bearing cone and cup if worn or rough.

ASSEMBLY (Pedestal and spindle)

Install the bearing cup in lower end of pedestal. Properly pack the bearing with bearing grease, and put a thin coat of the grease on bearing cup. Place bearing cone into bearing cup. Install the steering shaft oil seal. All oil seals must be soaked in oil before using. Use sealer on outer diameter of seal. Drive seal in flush with bottom of housing.

Install the spindle shaft in pedestal, pressing the shaft through bearing cone until the collar on shaft is seated firmly against bearing cone. With snap ring installed in the splined coupling, place over the upper end of spindle shaft with the end nearest the snap ring downward.

Install the capscrew, lockwasher, flat washer and the proper amount of shims to obtain the. correct bearing adjustment, and tighten capscrew 'securely. If bearing adjustment is too tight add shims and if too loose reznove shims. Adjust to a free rolling fit without end play or binding.

To install the pedestal assembly to the front support housing, turn the steering wheel to the straight ahead position, or until the pin hole in the vertical steering shaft is straight crosswise with tractor. Install the pedestal assembly with the spindles in the straight ahead position. After splined coupling engages shaft, install and tighten capscrews. Torque caps crews from 70 to 75 ft. lbs. Install wheel hubs and wheels. Torque wheels to hubs from 75 to 80 ft. Ibs.
