Allotments Stockport is the new name for SMAGA, which began as Stockport & District Allotment Society in 1945. Not only has the name changed, we are making it more useful to members, and representative of all Stockport allotment sites.

We endeavour to make meetings interesting, informative and welcoming - ALL PLOTHOLDERS WELCOME - MEET PEOPLE FROM OTHER SITES. We have a website and Facebook Group to share news, views and ideas. And we are preparing for the future by being fully informed of members’ concerns and opinions.

Allotments Stockport NEEDS YOU! To prepare for these changes, we are creating a network to keep in touch with all Stockport allotment sites. We have grouped sites into 5 areas, and we have volunteer LOCAL RESEARCHERS in each area - to collect information, news, concerns & ideas. But we need more Researchers to:

Some of the ways you could help • Speak to plotholders on sites in your area as often as possible, find out their news, problems or

any advice or assistance they need • Find out who the Ward Councillors are, and keep an eye out for any developments that might

affect allotments, such as planning applications or petitions • Develop a knowledge of funding opportunities that might be useful to your sites • Meet together with other researchers and a committee member to share ideas and experiences • Most important, draw on the knowledge you gain to help formulate Allotments Stockport

policies and direction to prepare for the changes to come

Stockport Council, in line with other local authorities, is likely to change allotment leases and put rents up soon

• Tameside allotment rents £105 per year • Sefton rents increased to £78 + water charges • Frodsham allotments managed by a private company - £250 per year (All plots taken + waiting list) • Wigan rents increase by 50% this year. Non statutory sites to be put out to tender. • Trafford allotment rents increase to £100+ next year • Leeds Allotment Gardening Federation sets up fighting fund to challenge rent rises from £38.50 to £58 in

2015, £64 in 2016 and £72 in 2017, pension concession reduced to 20%
