Potentate’s Message

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

I have been very busy these past months either representing Almas at a wide variety of events or participating in our club and unit meetings and activities. I am having a great time, how about you? I had the opportunity to speak at one of our Blue Lodge meetings to spread the word about Shrinedom. With the help of some of the brethren in this lodge, I hope to see some new candidates. I was also invited to attend the annual meeting of the Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star of the District of Columbia. This was an event where I met many of the leadership of the order. You should know that Most Worshipful Jesse Villarreal, PGM was elected to the position of Worthy Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter. Be sure to congratulate Noble Jesse.

Were you at the D.C. Grand Lodge semi-annual communication representing your Blue Lodge? I was. After taking part in the Scottish Rite Reunion, I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of our Chief Rabban Mike Gordon. Congratulations Mike and Vanessa. We remembered our departed Nobles at the Almas Memorial Service. A number of relatives of the Nobles remembered were present at this impressive ceremony. Next was a visit to the Veterans Center at Charlotte Hall. Many Masonic Organizations contributed to a fund to purchase a new large screen TV for our veterans. Thanks to all the organizations which made this possible.

The Yacht Club Cruise out of Annapolis was a great event. Boating on the Patuxent River and then having dinner upon our return. Meeting with the Southeast Shrine Club, the Northwest-BCC Shrine Club and the Yacht Club is always a pleasure and the food is excellent. Another Board of Director’s meeting and Almas Business meeting provided everyone in attendance a chance to take part in the future of Almas. How many Business meetings have you attended lately?

The 50 year Members and Past Potentates Lunch on June 4, 2016 is a good opportunity to honor those who have been a part of Almas and contributed to its success in years past. The Spring Ceremonial is June 11th where we will initiated a new group of men who will be part of the future of Almas. Will you be there to greet these new Nobles and encourage them to take an active part in our Temple? The Annual Golf Tournament is coming up on August 8, 2016. It will be an opportunity for those who enjoy the frustration and pleasure of a round of golf. Then I am off again to visit Irem Shrine where I will have the pleasure of meeting with my counterparts from other Shrine Temples. This is always a good event to discuss common problems and get some good ideas. Next it will be out to the Bowie Baysox baseball game. Twenty Nobles will be given the opportunity to obtain two free tickets to the game. See the ad on page 7 for all the information.

I will be attending the Imperial Session in July as a representative of Almas. I look forward to visiting Tampa once again and being a part of this session. This is an opportunity to meet the members of Shriners International. This is where all the business affecting every Temple will be discussed and decisions made. I will provide more information concerning this Imperial Session at a later date. Then we will be off to the beach for the Mid Atlantic Shrine Association in Virginia Beach. Information can be found on page 10. Come and join us for the last fling of Summer.

You can see that there are plenty of activities happening in and around Almas and I hope that you will take notice and become a part of some of them. By the way, I have not heard from anyone concerning the presence or well-being of Al Mas. I have come to the conclusion that he has been kidnapped. I am now willing to put up ransom, payable to the Transportation Fund, for information leading to the location and return of Al.

Fraternally,

Even though Samla Temple, No 51 takes a break from regular sessions during the summer months, we still stay busy.

Some of us are planning to attend the 90th Anniversary Open House at the Shri-ners Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA on Saturday, June 25th. The hos-pital was first dedicated in June of 1926 and to celebrate the occasion they will have special presentations, tours, entertainment and more!

Samla Temple has plans underway for a July Dinner and the 3rd Annual Wii Bowling Tournament at the Watson’s home. Though the games are friendly, it

gets rather competitive. Hope you can join us for this fun event! On Saturday, August 13th, the new Daughter’s of the Nile Supreme Queen will be making her annual visit to Samla Temple. We will be holding a banquet in her honor in the Almas Temple Ballroom, begin-ning with a social at 5:00 pm. Our patrol unit will perform a special routine. This banquet is open to everyone so if you would like to join us please let me know.

If you would like more information on the above events please contact me at [email protected].

With summer around the corner the Almas Shrine Yacht Club is looking forward to a mixed bag of cruises, picnics, and the Mid Atlantic Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs Annual Rendezvous in Chrisfield, Maryland. This year our Mid-summer cruise will be via land yachts to the home of Past Commodore Don and First Mate Becky Holliday for a potluck and cookout on August 20th. The club will supply grillings, chips, sodas, and beer. Members are to bring their favorite picnic sup-port dish. The final cruise of the year will be October 15 via land yachts to Pirate’s Cove restaurant in Galesville, Maryland. Information on these events will be communicated via e-mail and on the club’s Facebook pages. The Almas Yacht Club will be entering a float in the MASA convention in September. If you are interested in helping with the float contact Commodore Frank ([email protected]) for information and follow us on Facebook.

First Mate Steph and I have several cruises planned for the summer including the MAASYC Rendezvous. One of our favorite destinations is St. Michaels and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. The Museum is one of the premier museums on the Atlantic seaboard and well worth a visit as is the town of St. Michaels. The museum is a working mu-seum and, in addition to exhibits, it hosts events, ship restorations, and offers rides on historic boats. The latest restora-tion project is the Bugeye Edna Lockwood, a two-mast, nine-log bottom oyster boat. When the mast was removed dur-ing restoration a 1889 silver dollar was found embedded in the mast step. Embedding coins in the mast step is a maritime tradition thought to have begun by the Greeks and Romans who embedded coins to pay Charon fees to ferry sailors killed in battle across the river Styx. Now it is for the less gory purpose of good luck and continues on Navy vessels with coins or plaques attached to masts. Check out the museum’s website at www.cbmm.org for information on the restoration project and visiting hours. Also, check out Edna’s website http://www.ednalockwood.org to follow the restora-tion project.

Almas ClownsAs you saw in the picture in the May issue we had a wonderful time at the Cherry Blossom Parade. There were lots of Clowns from other Shrine Centers that joined us and several “Friends of the Clowns” including some of our Ladies and children and grandchildren of Shriners in attendance also. We were a big hit with the crowd. We had other clown vehicles along with the Almas Fire Engine driven by Past Potentate Kenny Collins. It was a great day for Almas and the Shrine Clowns.

We still need assistance with our group. As you can see we can have a great time, we just need you to join us to make it better. We need your help in creating the good times and to amuse the crowds. The next big chance to join us is in July at the 4th of July Parade in downtown Washington, DC. So call me at 301-318-2485 or Jay Whitcome at 301-404-7221 and lets see what kind of a costume we can come up with for you to wear in the parade on Saturday morning.

So lets all get together and make the Almas Clown Unit thrive and we can put on an even better show next year at the Cherry Blossom Parade.

Yours in the FaithWeird Wally (Walter Simon)Boss Klown
