Potentate’s Message The Month of May was blossoming with romance and Almas Activities.

May Day, the first of May, we ob-served with the National Day of Prayer, the third of May the Almas Latin Club celebrated Cinco de Mayo at the home of Lonnie and Ann Ramos, the fourth began Teach-ers Appreciation Week with letters of thanks to all out teachers especially the ones at our Philadelphia Hospital.

On May 10th the Peruvian Shrine Club Installation was a big success.

Almas Shriners John R. Garrison, Potentate, Luis G. Cisneros , Chief Rabban and Walter Simon, Chaplain were introduced at the Grand Chap-ter Order of the Eastern Star of the District of Columbia Grand Session.

A Mid Atlantic Shrine Association Spring Meeting was held, Mothers Day, which is every day, was cel-ebrated on May 11th. Peace Officers Memorial Day the 15th and Armed Forces Day on May 17th.

Our Almas Memorial Service and Remembrance Day was well attend-ed on May 18th at the Temple. We were privileged to have Noble Prince Havely sing for us during the service and if you every have the chance to

hear him take it. We had several of our Noble widows in attendance that afternoon and we were very happy to see them all.

Almas Shriners recognized and sup-ported the observance of Memorial Day - to honor those who were killed in service to our nation throughout history. We placed flags on veteran’s graves, marched in parades and visited memorials. When you see a armed forces service person take a moment to say hello and thank them for their service to the United States of America.

At a Joint Board Meeting Imperial Sir Doug Maxwell, Chairman of the Board of Trustees for Shriners Hos-pitals for Children gave an update of the progress made in contacting the various organizations that have inter action with America’s Wounded Vet-erans. A motion was made and it read ‘With a “Business Plan” in place and a study for the need of our services, the Joint Boards will whole-heartedly support the continuation of trying to help the Wounded Warrior program.’ The Joint Boards overwhelmingly passed this motion.

The Month of June is also full of sun. Flag Day June 14th, Fathers Day 15th, The First Day of Summer 21st and our Almas Ladies Appreciation Month. Than you ladies for all you do for Almas Shriners and your Nobles.

There if a Business Meeting sched-uled for June 5th, please mark you calendar to attend. June 7th brings our Spring Ceremonial and the 50 Year Members and Past Potentates Lunch. Join us then to welcome the new Nobles and honor our special Nobles.

The Almas Latin Club has scheduled a Latin Luau for June 20th so pull out your Hawaiian shirt and your mu mu and let’s all have a great time.

Summer will be here before you know it along with the Imperial Session in Minneapolis, Minnesota. I wish you all a very great summer with plenty of time to spend with your lady and family.

Enjoy and we will see you in Septem-ber.

Yours in the Faith,

We had our regular meeting on April 24th at Alfio’s Restaurant with a good turnout of nobles and guests.

Our next meeting will be on the 4th Thursday, May 22nd at the home of Don & Becky Holliday, 6020 Jerry’s Drive, Columbia, MD 21044. Phone number is 410-730-1767. It will be a cookout, pot luck affair. Make reservations thru Fred Evans, Secretary at 301-460-1982. By that time we will have more information on the June 21st event. This will be a tour of the Police & Fireboat facilities at Main Avenue. It is my understanding that they will ferry us up to a restaurant in Georgetown and bring us back.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 22nd.

Daughters of the Nile

It is hard to believe that summer is almost upon us! Samla Temple is currently preparing to journey to Omaha, NE for the Daughters of the Nile Supreme Session, June 1-5.

Our Patrol Unit has been working hard on a new drill that they will perform at the session and I am very excited to see it! I know Samla will represent Washington well.

On Thursday, August 14th the new Supreme Queen will be making the annual visit to Samla Temple. We will be holding a banquet in her honor in the Almas Temple ballroom, begin-ning with a social at 5:00 pm. This banquet is open to everyone so if you would like some good company and

Assistant Rabban

Greetings Nobles.

I had the privilege of attending the Cres-cent/LuLu Yacht Club Commodore’s Ball last month along with Ill. Don Holliday and Noble

Jay Whitcomb. There was a good showing of members of the other Mid-

good food, we would love to see you! Details regarding the menu and cost are still being ironed out, but please contact Past Queen Helen Pearson for information and reservations. She can be reached at 301-990-3552 or [email protected]

Atlantic Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs and all had a wonderful time.

Next was the Almas Easter Egg Roll for the children. There were many children and grandchildren of Nobles, friends and a patient who is currently receiving treatment at the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia. There were many eggs to be chosen and prizes for all the children. Everyone had a good time.

Then I was off to Pittsburgh to attend the Syria Potentate’s Ball. I was ac-companied by Noble Bill Bridegum. We were treated royally and had a wonderful time. The meal was out-standing and their program for the evening was quite good.

Until next time,Fred EvansAssistant Rabban

Well, the East-West Shrine game for 2014 is now history and the East wins again, 23-13. This was the third game that we have attended and what a game it was! I believed that it was far better than the Super Bowl. Now remem-ber, that the National League football scouts were also there in numbers and I wouldn’t be surprised if at least two players, in particular, got picked. My first pick would be Demonte McAl-lister, #97, who was one of the reasons that the East won. He’s from one of my alma maters, Florida State. When we talked with him, he was so happy that he was asked to play in the game and for the opportunity to have spent some time with the kids at the Tampa Shriners Hospital. Later in our conver-sation with my grandson, Zachary and me, he did mention that he had a lot of fun while playing. Then he said that he’d be tremendously excited if one of the scouts picked him. Watch for his name. A terrific young man.

The second player that really caught my attention was Bernard Reedy (from Toledo). I could identify with him in height, (he’s 5’7), then looking around at the other players, I wondered how he felt facing them on the field. In fact he caught at least four passes which included one for a 20 yard run that ended in a touchdown. While standing in groups with my youngest grandson, I couldn’t help but think what Reedy must have thought looking at those other players on the field that looked like “10 foot mountains of muscle.”

A third player that caught my eye was Ethan Westbrook, from West Texas A&M. He had at least 2 or 3 sacks and he too said he had a lot of fun and had always hoped that he would be chosen some day for the Shrine Bowl. He had a close friend who received care at one of our hospitals. And to top this off, he won the Pat Tillman award for his playing. Remember Pat Tillman in Afghanistan in 2004?

Another name to watch to appear in the big leagues is Jimmy Garoppolo. Notably he was 8 for 14 for 98 yards and also Jordan Lynch. Lynch, was third in the Heissman Trophy voting.

Garoppolo was not modest when he said to us that he considered himself as one of the best players in the nation. He might be and that should be proven in the future.

If my grandson had written this article it would have been written with much more in-depth coverage then I did and written by someone who is really into sports and likes it. He even knew one of the players from North Carolina.

These Shrine games have been ongo-ing longer that many of us have lived and have influenced many lives. While I would love to write that the income that it takes in pays for our hospitals - it doesn’t. In fact, a lot of the mon-ies that we pay for supporting it could very easily be used by the hospitals to improve or expand on the care that we give. But face it, just the name “THE EAST WEST SHRINE GAME” says so much by itself.

We need your financial help to sup-port it even more so. Even going to the game alone is a terrific boost to the players and to those watching it on National TV.

Every Shriner got tickets in the mail last year which were definitely not expensive. Did you pay for them? Toss them aside? Still sitting on your desk? Even if you sent the payment in, just think how valuable the game is and consider sending another contribution and make the check a lot healthier. Then when you watch the 2015 game next January, you can smile proudly that you helped make this game an-other great one.

Our family enjoyed being there and meeting these kids. Everyone we met was polite and friendly. Some even asked how they could become a Shriner and almost all added some comment about the kids they met at the hospital. This is our game-so let’s support it better.

Krazy Klown Korner

Klowns without Kostumes, we need your help. We need men who love to klown around and make kids and adults smile. We need warm bodies.

We were only able to field four klowns at the Cherry Blossom Parade. Thank heavens for Kena and Rhode Island klowns to give the crowd a respectable number.

We will be having the Rockville Labor Day parade and we’ve been asked to join the Grand Lodge at the July 4th Parade.

We would look bad if we only had 4 or 5 klowns. Take heed and join the Unit. Let your true feelings out and don’t be afraid to act up in costume.
