Spring is here! We have finally hadsome warm sunny days and an evensurer sign the 12 Hours of Sebringand the Australian Grand Prix racestook place! The Sebring/AustralianGP weekend is one of the best raceweekends of the year with two iconicraces. This years Australian GP wasespecially interesting because ofthe sweeping rule changes, the big-gest of which is the move to turbocharged V6 engines combined witha much more powerful KERS (KineticEnergy Recovery System). The en-

gines have way more torque com-pared to last years V8s which makesfor some fun racing as the cars have alots of power induced oversteer, Thatsaid I really miss the sound of the V8engines spinning at 16,000 rpm (re-ally miss the 18,000 rpm V10s!)

Sebring was a great race to watch, although I had to watch most of itstreamed through my iPad to the Ap-ply TV since Fox 1 only broadcastedthe beginning of the race. Porschewon the GT class with their new 991RSR and the GT Daytona class withthe 991 GT America which is basedon the Cup car.

April brings us a couple fun events. The first is a new Tech Session atCleveland Whiskey and Magnet.Greg Krizman and Dave Pierson ofMagnet (Manufacturing Advocacy &Growth Network) will show off theirfacility and demonstrate their RapidPrototyping processes. Dave sayshell make something cool on the 3Dprinter for us to see. And at the samefacility, Tom Lix of Cleveland Whiskeywill show us his whiskey productionfacility designed with help fromMagnet. We will get to see the cur-rent state of the art local distilleryand get to sample what they make.April 27st brings us our first drivingevent of the year. We will be holdingour annual Autocross/Car ControlClinic at Lakeland Community Col-lege. The event will cover all of thebasics of autocross and is a perfectintroduction for the novice, as wellas a good refresher for the veteransout there. For those of you who maynot be familiar with autocross, anautocross is a low to medium speed

auto racing events that is run in alarge parking lot. One driver at a timenegotiates a course laid out with thecones, or pylons, testing their skillagainst the clock. Time penalties arecharged for disturbing cones. Auto-crosses are an excellent way to seewhat your Porsche can do (and whatyou are capable of as a driver!) in asafe and controlled environment

Our first Divers Education event willbe held at Mid-Ohio on May 3-4. Whatis a Drivers Education event? It is twofull days of learning the capabilitiesof you and your car on a world-classroad course facility in Lexington, OH.Drivers will be grouped accordingto experience to drive with an in-carinstructor on the rolling layout ofthe 2.34 mile, 14 turn circuit. Thereis also classroom instruction and a

lapping day for instructors and ex-perienced students on Friday, April27th. I would encourage anyone whohas never been to Mid-Ohio to comeon down sometime during the eventweekend to check it out.

On a final note, I wanted to intro-duce Noah Wheeler, our resident DEphotographer, and new Editor of thisnewsletter. Noah has been comingto the track for years with his DadMorris, and has built up quite repu-tation for all of his fantastic photog-raphy as well as being our residentguru for Harrys Laptimer an iPhonebased data acquisition app. Noah isone of the biggest Porsche nuts youwill ever meet and I look forward toseeing what he has in store for theVoices!

    by Michael Soriano

    Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,

I am pleased to be able to share some very exciting newswith you. The Porsche Club of America has seen tremen-dous growth recently, and as a result, has had a very suc-cessful and profitable year. One of the topics during ourZone Rep meetings over the past few months has beenwhat to do with this surplus of funds; if it is to be refunded, and if so, how much. And, it is my pleasure to inform you that in an unprec-edented move, PCA will be refunding a total of $500,000 back to the regions. The payout for this total will be distributed as follows; each region will re-ceive a one-time rebate subsidy of $7.50 per primary member, and regionscan utilize these funds in any way they see fit. This is perfect timing as most of the regions within our zone are preparingfor the upcoming driving season. I am certain this new influx of unexpectedfunds will be a welcome addition to each of your regions, and will be usedto improve a wide variety of activities throughout the year. Be sure to checkyour local regions website and newsletter for the latest details on the manyevents close to you that are being planned. It is with great sadness that I write that Diane Zupancicpassed away on Saturday morning, February 22, 2014,after a long battle with cancer. This short note is a trib-ute to her zeal for life, her humor, her fierceness. Dianeloved her life and her husband and soulmate, Frank. She told great stories, cooked and ate well, loved thecars, was one of the best story tellers - on herself andin general, and was always supportive of her friends.Diane loved the social side of the Porsche club, thoughshe was unable to participate in the last few years. Sheis now at peace with no more pain. Those that metDiane are richer for having known her and Frank. Ourhearts reach out to support him and remember her al-

    ways.

Everybody had fun at the recent Whirly Ball event. Be sureto check pages 4 and 5 or NORPCA.org for upcoming socialevents. Remember, its not just the cars, its the people.

NORPCA Whirly ball event pictures THe 919s Intelligent New Livery

When Porsche first revealed theofficial livery for the 919 Hybrid, the groans from the press wereunderstandable.

For months, leaked conceptdrawings of Martini liveries hadbeen popping up in the automo-tive media. Everyone was excitedfor the return of Porsche to LeMans, but even more so for the

return of the legendary Martinilivery. Disappointingly, at the of-ficial Geneva reveal, Martini wasnot present. Just a boring black

and white color scheme. No trib-

ute to the screaming prototypesof Porsche past. All was not losthowever. The livery containedmore than meets the eye.

When viewed from above, a se-cret message is displayed, sud-denly making the graphics seemjust a little more intelligent. Halfof Porsche Intelligent Perfor-mance is displayed on the top, with the other half being on theother car.

Just like the technology in theircars, Porsche wanted their liveryto be intelligent. Also present onthe Sebring winning GTLM 911

RSR, expect this motto to be in-creasingly present in Porschemarketing material in the yearsto come.

April 2014 1918 NOR-PCA Voices from the Trunk

Our adventure starts theway many others have in thepast. Three NOR guys sittingaround with beers talking aboutracing at different tracks. Kellenis telling Skip and I about howhe and the team we be racingare heading out to California inDecember to race in a chump carrace at Mazda Laguna Seca Race-way (LSR). In the conversationKellen encourages us to contact

Patrick Hawkins and Bob Lasserbecause they have plans to taketheir 944s2 to do the same andthey have room for a couple ofdrivers. At the time, although ex-

cited, the two of us only give theopportunity a ten percent chance

of coming together. After abouta month of time, a few emails andphone calls, things were look-ing better and better. The guyswere indeed going to Californiaand they would take us as driv-ers. We were still hopeful, but stillseemed like a long shot, chancesjumped all the way to 20 percentin our minds. Time to buy airlineticket, Shannon McCue was ableto squeeze on the team and theplan was to taking shape. So, nowwe are 5 total committed driversfor a double 7.5 hour race Chumpcar style. The double 7.5 formatmeans that there is 7.5 hours ofracing each day and the cars are

sequestered over night for a totalrace time of 15 hours. Each driverwould have 3 hours of seat timeif all things going well. The teamwas not going to be without itschallenges. The only team mem-ber who had ever driven at LSRwas Bob who had driven somemild laps on a motorcycle. Therewas not going to be any practice, warm up, or qualifying, so formost of us the first time we were

to experience the track was ourturn in the car. On top of that, thiswas Skips first race, Patricks sec-ond race, and Bobs first time backafter a several years of hiatus. So,no problem.

Ok, back to the plan. Kellengoes through the car, it goes onthe trailer, and car is transportedto Daytona for the weekend withDave Pierson and the Audi ClubDE. The car then is transporteddirectly across country by Patrickand Bob to Monterey for the race.Skip, Shannon, and I fly out on Fri-day and meet up with Patrick andBob for Friday afternoon tech. Wethen planed to drive 1.5 hourseach day with fueling every other

driver change. The driver order asdecided by the car owners was tobe Ed, Bob, Patrick, Shannon, andSkip.

Everyone made it to the trackjust fine (after a great pastramisandwich I might say). The carsailed through tech without a

hitch, and all our gear checkedwith no problems. The car hadsome additions two way radioequipment and some extra noisedampening because of the trackextreme sound limits. At the endof the day the plan was perfectlyon track. Friday night we foundour hotel, found a good place toeat, and got a good nights sleepall while trying to shake off thejet lag.

Saturday morning we got tothe track early, set up our pitstall, had to move our pit stalland reset it all up again, and got

the car ready. I got my gear on

since I was the first one out, radiochecks to make sure driver andcrew could be heard no prob-lems everything seemed perfect.

Chump car starts their races inan interesting way. They do notdo the traditional rolling start ora standing start. They put all thecars out on track and perform atransponder check to see thatthey can see everyone. They thenpick a car at random and as soonas that car rolls across the startfinish, they drop the double yel-lows and the race is on.

I run out on track and it looks

exactly like the videos I have beenwatching and the video games Ihave been playing. The first timeI get to the top of the corkscrew, however, I am just completelytaken away by the drop. I geton the radio to exclaim my Wa-hoo as I fall down the corkscrew,WHAT A RUSH! After a couple ofslow laps around the track, I cansee the corner worker fiddlingwith their double yellow so I getready and sure enough, Shannonis on the radio with the greenflag announcement and awaywe go. The competitors are care-ful of each other or as we call itgentlemen racing. There are noissues at the beginning of therace. I am running around hav-

ing a good time and learning thetrack. I short shift and coast pastthe sound shack every lap.

You remember me saying thatLaguna has a VERY restrictivesound limit. The sound limit is2 db less than what is permittedon public roads in California. Werealize early on Saturday morn-ing even before we go on trackthat our car is among the loudestin the paddock. We might havea problem. Before we go out wesend Skip out to find more muf-flers. We knew we were goingto need to do something. Fri-day night we had gotten a rollof screen material and a bunch

of steel wool to create a customsecond muffler in the tail pipealong with a 90 degree bend toturn the sound away from wherethe sound recording was goingto be taken. Back out on track,I am running lifting and coast-ing by the sound shack. On the

second hot lap, the car, chokedby the extra restriction coughsout (belches, regurgitates, pukes(your choice))our custom muf-fler almost directly in front of andobviously in protest to the soundshack. With the car noticeably louder, Iknew that we were going to havea problem. Sure enough, half anhour later, when our grace periodwas up the meatball flag cameout for me signifying that therewas a mechanical problem withmy car. Communication with thecrew confirmed that the failurewas due to a sound issue. Did Imention that at the time we were

in first place working our way upfrom fifteenth. Well, we led therace for a few laps anyway. I pullthe car into the paddock to findthat Skip had returned from hisadventures with a FlowmasterMuffler, another 90 degree bendand a 180 degree bend. Skips

adventures included finding themuffler at AutoZone, no luck atone muffler shop, then a secondmuffler shop with dirt floors cutapart some existing used pipesand weld together two priorpieces together. We quickly fiteverything up and cut the exist-ing tail pipe to make the rightfit. We then have about thirtyminutes for our turn for a chanceto use a borrowed arc welder toweld the setup together becausethe clamps Skip got were justnot strong enough to deformthe steel pipes robbed from theold stock exhausts. Finally ourchance at the welder, I have not

stick welded for years but I havestick welded so I am up. In myrace suit, lying under the car, us-

ing a welder that only worked ifShannon held the connection tothe generator just right and Bobheld the connection to the weld-er just right, welding the pipes onthe car. Success the car is quieterand everything looks right. My turn in the car is over and Bobsuits up and jumps in. He goesout on track and does a soundcheck. No issues, so it is back at it.We are feeling confident. Aboutthirty minutes in he calls to askhow the muffler looks since, hejust got bumped from the backand was worried that the mufflertook the hit. It all looked goodfrom where we were at, so hekept at it. Bob was having a goodtime until about an hour into hisrun the meatball came back out.Second strike on the sound if weget three strikes and we are donefor the weekend. This time, thesound was only a 93db insteadof our original 102db, so weare close. We bring the carin to the paddock add in aex pipe to our tail pipe flledwith more screen and steelwool (much better secured).Bobs time in the car is done.Patrick suits up and goes out.

Skip and I jump in thevan and head back into town

for more gas and more muf-ers. The thought is that wecan add something more sig-nifcant in the evening so thatwe can be rock solid for Sunday. The only auto parts store thatSkip did not hit up was NAPA be-cause they had not opened tilllater than he was there, so NAPAwas our first stop. The counter-workers tell us that they had nomufflers. We figured that a cata-lytic converter would also dead-en sound, so we asked aboutone of those too. The great guysthere said that they need to goin the back and see what theyhad. He returned laughing with a

box that looked like it might have

been there since the 1930s. Inthe box was a great looking muf-fler with a 3.25 inch input and a 2inch output. The 3.25 inch endhad a 4 bolt flange on it sealingthe decision that this was themuffler intended for a tractor. Weboth said at the same time thatwe would take it. We run backto the track sweating every timethe phone chimed that it wouldbe that we have gotten our thirdand final strike on sound.Back at the track everything isfine. We arrive just in time tohelp transition from Patrick toShannon. No issue other than

our makeshift tail pipe was point-ing at bad things under the carmaking more heat than we want-ed. Shannon was out and doingwell. He does his entire time inthe car with no issues and comesin. Our final driver Skip goes outand gets in about thirty minutesbefore he calls in that somethingis wrong. He tells us that some-thing is rubbing in the back or he

has a flat tire. He comes into thepits we crawl all around the carand cannot find anything wrongso, we adjust tire pressure andthat is about it. I tell Skip that hereally only has two choices: onehe can bring the car behind thewall, we can jack the car up andlook it over, or two he can goback out and see if it is gets bet-ter or worse. Well, we did notneed to wait long for our answerit got worse. Skip leaves the pitsand two corners later the wheelcomes off but not all the way off.It seems that one of the rear hubswas cracked and was still holdingon, but the one more corner thehub completely snapped. Skiprolled into a safe spot and waited

for the tow truck to bring him

    back.

This was an unanticipated failurewe have no spare parts for thisissue the car is done. We makea plea on Pelican and Rennlistto see if someone close by hada part we could use. We talkedwith the other 944s in the racethat locked up their engine, butthe parts were different. We weredone racing is over time to packup. Get everything together andgo enjoy a beverage and a cigarthe downside of the car breaking.

It was a great effort and we had-

lot of fun. The other two teamsthat came from our area foughton and finished 8th and 9th onSunday. It was a great experienceand fun to drive and race a trackwe have not driven. Somethingwe are all looking forward toexperiencing again maybe at adifferent track, but going some-where warm in the middle of thewinter and racing is just plain fun. Thanks to Patrick and Bob whograciously took the three of us onas drivers to share in the experi-ence.

According to the calendar,Spring is here although thatdoesnt seem to mean any-thing to whoever controlsCleveland weather. It means alot, though, to the race fans ofthe world. Whether it be For-mula 1, IndyCar, United StatesSport Car Racing, AustralianV8 Supercars or even NASCAR,all the major racing series areback in action, and I am ec-

static. As you may have guessed, Iam a devoted racing fan. Myname is Noah Wheeler, and Iam a junior at Shaker HeightsHigh School. Im a pretty nor-mal teenager all things con-sidered. For example justthis month I was groundedfor sneaking out of my roomat 4 am . . . to watch the For-mula 1 season opener. I havebeen known to stay up late onweekend nights partying withmy friends. Friends of coursereferring to my internet com-panions on various automo-tive chat rooms and partyingmeaning watching all 12 hours

of the 12 Hours of Sebring.I am also a Porsche fanatic. Icurrently own: a 935, a 550Spyder, 911 GT1, 909 Berg-spyder and multiple 917s. Al-though most teenagers wouldhave trouble finding space forsuch cars, I have no trouble atall: they are all 1/43rd scale. When I am not in my own fan-tasy world, I drive a blue FordFiesta.

Besides following racing anddreaming of cars, my hobbiesinclude homework, photogra-phy, biking, and skiing. I run

my schools investment club, and am on the leadershipcommittee for Shakers Stu-dent Group on Race Relations.

When I am not at school youcan normally find me work-ing on homework, browsingJalopnik.com or sorting pho-tos from the most recent trackday.

The learning curve is steepas I take control of Voices, soI apologize for any errors inthe formatting of this issue. Iplan on adding lots of interest-

ing and new content to Voicesduring my term as editor.

If you have any questions, comments, concerns, or sug-gestions, feel free to contactme either by email at [email protected] or [email protected]. You can also reachme at those addresses if youhave advice on how best toget an internship with AdrianNewey.
