ALOE Transit SBC rev.1*
Target audience:- Any carrier whose network has IP borders with other networks
Reasons for deployment:Improving
- interoperability,
- information security, and
- network reliability
Deployment case:At the point where service provider networks interconnect, a solution for signaling and media control is necessary –
it is ALOE Transit SBC rev.1.
* Product release – October 2011
ALOE Transit SBC rev.1 in the Carrier’s Network
Placed at the border of carrier’s networks, ALOE Transit SBC:
• provides an intelligent interconnection between partners
• performs media anchoring through IP routing
• Allows for more efficient use of network resources
ina single, highly scalable
software platform
Functions
ALOE Transit SBC rev.1 delivers the following functions: Secure entry point into the carrier’s VoIP network
Network topology hiding
Centralized media traffic management
Maintaining SIP-related NAT-bindings
Access Control
Protocol and codec interworking
Key Benefits
• Advanced Routing
• Protocol Interworking
• Distributed Architecture with Centralized Management
• Media Anchoring• Access Control
• Dynamic Transcoding
• Network Security
• Distributed License
• Floating License
Network Security
• Network topology hiding from peering partners for information security (IP-address, etc.)
• Call authorization by IP address/username and password based on data from internal system’s configuration
• Ability to control incoming CPS/RPS value
• Privacy support (presentation/screening indicators, RFC3325/RFC4497/Cisco Remote-Party-id)
• NAT Traversal
Dynamic Transcoding
• Call-by-call transcoding (no need to transcode all calls of a trunk to the same codecs)
• Ability to set codec attributes for better interoperation with vendor’s and customer’s equipment
Access Control
Extensive access control
Only specific units of vendor’s/customer’s equipment can access the network
Internal code and operations are protected from outside influence and malicious attacks
Media Anchoring
Efficient media routing
Better control and knowledge of the RTP quality
(as RTP is anchored to interconnect SBC)
ALOE Transit SBCanchors media traffic at the border switch, so operator’s
internal IP addresses become hidden from the
outer endpoints
Distributed Architecture with Centralized Management
Single management point for geographically distributed system
Efficient load balancing and dynamic redistribution of workload allows for
– Efficient usage of hardware resources
– Increased overall reliability of the system
Zone traffic manager to ensure number translation and network access
Interworking
Multi-protocol support (SIP, H.323) for seamless interoperation with
multi-vendor and multi-protocol VoIP equipment
Protocol repair for smooth interworking
between different interconnect networks
NAT Traversal
Advanced Routing
Dynamic and static routing between interconnect peers
based on a diversity of parameters (ASR, gateway/route load, day of week, time of day, caller ID, etc.)
Routing based on received SIP 300/302 redirect messages
ALOE Transit SBC rev.1 Web Interface
Deployment Case #1: ALOE Transit SBC for Network Security
Business Challenge
A carrier runs a network with a complex structure comprised of several different elements, each of which performs its own tasks.
One of the softswitches in the network has low capacity and can process no more than 100 CPS. Another softswitch is programmed to handle traffic from one particular client.
It is important for the carrier to keep this multivendor complex network structure functioning in case of a DDoS attack. Thus, the carrier’s requirements are the following:
•The network should be well protected from possible DDoS attacks
•The SBC should be able to work with various network elements from different vendors

Deployment Case #1: ALOE Transit SBC for Network Security
Solution from ALOE Systems
By installing ALOE Transit SBC the carrier will provide all network elements with necessary security.
Being the only traffic entry point into the network, ALOE Transit SBC hides the network topology, at the same time making traffic volumes equal for every element of the network by controlling the COS rates and signal protocols.
In case of a DDoS attack on the network only ALOE Transit SBC will be affected, leaving the complex network infrastructure untouched.
Network’s performance can be immediately resumed by running the IP address of the affected SBC on another server where ALOE Transit SBC is installed.
Deployment Case #2: ALOE Transit SBC for Special Routing Policies
Business Challenge
A carrier runs a network with a complex structure comprised of several different elements, each of which performs its own tasks.
The carrier needs to implement a solution for special customer / vendor routing policies in the network to route traffic to a particular interconnect peer.
The carrier’s requirements are the following:
•The specific routing should be performed by a separate element of the network (the existing softswitches should not be reconfigured)
•The structure of the network should remain the same
•The network should not be rebooted
•The issue should be solved with minimal expenses for the carrier

Deployment Case #2: ALOE Transit SBC for Special Routing Policies
Solution from ALOE Systems
A carrier can install ALOE Transit SBC for routing purposes: the product can be used to implement customer / vendor-specific routing policies.
ALOE Transit SBC can route traffic to a particular interconnect partner. Routing traffic to this partner is done through one interface.
Thus by using ALOE Transit SBC the carrier
•does not have to change the network structure;
•does not need to reboot the network;
•can solve the issue of routing traffic to a particular interconnect partner with minimal expenses.
