Aloha Hive BUZZ Winter 2011 Greetings Hivers! I hope you enjoy this edition of the Buzz. It was so much fun seeing so many of you while I was traveling to the open houses last month. Each of you, in the different locations, added so much to helping new families see the magic of Hive. Seeing you, sharing summer memories, and seeing how many of you are coming back next summer has me dreaming of Hive 2011. It will bee another amazing summer! I have had a great fall enjoying warm days here at home in Norwich and over at camp. When I was over at camp to clean out the gardens, I was greeted by about 100 beautiful yellow peppers to harvest. Your love and care of the gardens really paid off in such a bountiful harvest, thank you! As you can imagine, when I walk around camp it is very quiet. There are no giggles from the hillside, or conversations from the dining hall, or squeals from the farm. It is as if camp has gone to sleep for the winter in order to get ready for another summer, which is only about six months away. As the weather begins to get colder I am waiting in anticipation for our first snow storm. I am not sure how many of you snow shoe, ski, cross country ski, or do other winter sports, but that is what I will be doing much of the winter. My dog, Mini, and I will spend hours outside snow shoeing, mostly over at camp. When the lake freezes it is really fun to walk across the lake! I hope you all have some fun activities to keep you busy throughout the winter months. I have heard from some of you about how our camp theme of “Courage” has helped you this fall in school and other places in your life. I am thrilled that you are still thinking about how you can use courage to be your best self. And, you know what? When you are being your best self, it will help those around you to be their best selves as well. It’s a pretty powerful thing, and I am so glad so many of you are trying on your own sense of courage. Next summer we will be building on our courage theme and we’ll help you look even deeper into who you want to be and who you want to grow into. I can’t think of a better place to do self exploration than at camp: a safe, comfortable and simple environment that gives us the space, solid relationships and time to discover. For now, and throughout the winter, dream of Hive 2011, and of all the wonder that awaits each and every one of you. Aloha and Cheers to you all!! Kathy Plunkett Director, Camp Aloha Hive

Well, I am playing soccer, squash and tennis. I am taking an oil painting class at Concordia College and my fall is going great. In school we are writing a letter to the president about the oil spill. We are also interviewing our parents about the oil spill. We are writing a lot of creative stories in writing and one of my stories was about Hive and you were in it. Aloha, Laura Holland

Mary Schwarzer will be on stage with Boston Ballet’s Nutcracker this year. She is in the battle scene, playing the role of a doll who gets carried off by a mouse. The schedule is demanding, lots of rehearsals on top of regular class, but she’s having a great time and learning lots. Hopes to see everyone again next year.

I miss you and I miss Hive. I’ve been busy with swimming and Istarted drums at school. When I’m swimming in the pool I still expect to see fish! I can’t wait to come back as an Anti-Q. Love, Camille Buffaloe

Q: If fish lived on land, where would they live?

A: In Finland.

Q: Why can’t skeletons play church music?

A: Because they have no organs.

I started a new travel soccer team and we are winning all of our games. For our league we are in first place. I started Chinese which is difficult. Aloha, Grace Wonnell

This year started out great! My friend, Helena, started telling me about all these different kinds of patterned duct tape. Me and my mom went on YouTube and looked up, “How to Make a Duct Tape Handbag.” My birthday is in the summer so I had my birthday party in September (the beginning of the school year.) We tried it out at my party. First they were a little messy, but then we got the hang of it. After my party, me and my mom went over to Michael’s (the art store) and looked at patterned duct tape and bags. We decided to start making a lot of them. Here are some pictures of some of my bags. I miss camp sooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t wait for next summer. From, Eloise Harcourt

Aloha from across the Atlantic! I looked up from my desk this morning wondering how I was going to keep warm and dry on my bike ride home from school--it is windy and rainy and a bit gloomy here in England today. As my mind wandered, I remembered a lively conversation at Table 17 in which we all fantasized about a year-round Hive, even through the winter. How would we cope with the elements? What kind of activities and subjects would we have? Which would be our favourites? Funny how I never think of school during the summer! But I always seem to think of summer as the school year progresses (don’t be misled--I do love my teaching job and students).

Some of the greatest ideas were suggested: snow tennis, x-c skiing on the lake, snowboarding down Aloha Hill! We would keep outdoor cooking, hiking would become snow shoeing, landsports could offer skating and hockey. Performing arts, gymnastics, A&C, archery could go on as usual of course. Oh, we did admit that we’d have to throw in some academic subjects too, but that would be easy as long as we kept the fires going to keep us warm. Who knows, maybe it’s not all fantasy...!

I miss you all of you terribly and think of Hive daily. Can’t wait to see everyone again in 2011!

Hi Everyone! I am writing from Buenos Aires, Argentina,

where I am for six weeks. While in Argentina, I am taking Spanish classes, living with a

family, and exploring the city. In my travels over

the last few years, I have come to realize that most parts of the

world don’t have summer camps like we have in the United States. It helps me realize how lucky we are to have Hive and most kids in other parts of the world aren’t so lucky. After camp, I went to Maine for a week with Jess McCray, where we hiked, canoed, kayaked, and shared each others’ misery that camp was over. In September, Lucy Reynard and I visited Allison Maryan in Fairfax, Virginia. I can’t stop thinking about all of you and what a great summer we had! I miss you all. Lots of love, Molly Baird

Salutations and greetings to you all! (to quote the Shakespeare play from second half!) I thought only of camp the other day when I went in to audition for a production of Beauty and the Beast! I’m having the best time auditioning and living in my new home in New York City with Alice Renier, Performing Arts’ music extraordinaire. I’m also working at The

New York Kids Club running birthday parties and teaching. It’s so much fun! It is my

understanding that there are lots of Hivers buzzing around the Big Apple. Who wants to

meet Margaret Pennoyer and me at the Maple Tree in Central Park? (We’ll have

to find a good one, although none are as great as the original). I hope that there are lots of Hivers gracing the stages in school plays around the globe, and that on your opening night, you dance around and shout, because, after all, “IT IS THE DAY OF THE SHOW Y’ALL!” So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu!Jackie Schram

Q. Do you want to hear a construction joke?

A. Sorry, I’m still working on it.Page 7

Q: What do you call a calf after it’s six months old?A: Seven months old.

Aloha Hivers, I’m writing this message on my way to work at the Zoo in Sydney, Australia. It feels like forever since I have seen you all!

After camp I went on two very exciting adventures to explore your beautiful country! Molly Baird, head of canoeing, and her wonderful and loving family took me to Mt Desert Island in Maine. We saw lots of wildlife and did a few hikes around what is now my second favourite place in the USA (Hive being the first of course!)

After that first adventure, Kate Noble, head of sailing, and I went on a huge road trip across half of America. We travelled from Boston to Austin, Texas, stopping in DC, Ohio, and New Orleans, Louisiana along the way. I finished my trip off with a week in California, which was awesome! I even met Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse!

My 17-hour flight back to Sydney, Australia went very quickly because I had lots of happy thoughts and memories of Hive to keep me company :) I’m happy to be home and back at work with all my animal friends, and now I can’t wait for my Australian summer to begin.

I miss you all very much, I hope you are all enjoying school, and I hope to see you in summer 2011. Love, Jess McCrayHive Farm

Hello everyone! We have started to have some colder weather lately here in Atlanta, but the sun is shining brightly today! I have had a busy fall taking classes at Agnes Scott College and doing backstage work for our school theatre productions. In February, I will be acting in our production of The Jack Tales which should be a really fun show! How is school going for all of you? Sometimes when I

have a lot of homework, I sing camp songs in my head to get me through the day! I miss camp and all of you, and I can’t wait to see you again for Hive 2011. Have a wonderful school year and holiday season! Caitlin White

Hello, hello from Colorado!

Wow, I can’t believe the holidays are nearly upon us, how time flies! However, Hive is never far from my mind nor all the fun we had together this summer. Just thinking about Tippy Tests, Unit Parties, and Rainbow’s End always brings a smile to my face. Oh, and how I miss Hive’s grilled cheese sandwiches!

Even though I was sad to leave camp a week or so early, I’m forever grateful for my incredible trip to South Africa...what an experience! Nothing less than magical as I truly fell in love with the Bushveld. Not only was it amazing seeing such wildlife in their natural habitat, but to see them so closely - almost too close in come cases! There’s no doubt my heart skipped a beat a few times especially when we were approached by a herd of 600+ buffalo, mocked charged by an elephant, and witnessed a lion kill. GULP! And not only was it what we saw, but what we heard (and smelled!). I’ll never forget the night lying in bed and hearing the roar of lions all around me...all night! However, with all the COURAGE I gained at Hive this summer, I knew I would be OK.

I’m already looking forward to packing my Green & Whites for next summer...hope to see you all back on Lake Fairlee! In the meantime, I’ll just keep singing camp songs out west until we can all sing them together again in the Comb.Aloha!Julianna Johnson

Hello everyone from Vermont. It is getting very cold here in the Southern part of Vermont! I have been very busy with my school work and I have also started to learn a new language. So, now I will be able to count to ten in yet another language! I will surprise you all next summer about what I’ve learned. How are you all doing? How is school? I sure am counting down the days until Hive and summer. I hope I will see you all back next summer. I cannot wait to be next to

the shores of Lake Fairlee. See you soon! Aloha, Eva

I have been very busy hiking and traveling (and eating apple-cider donuts) after camp ended. I am studying hard at college in New Hampshire during the weekdays, but

thinking fondly of the Anti-Qs and hiking with Hivers! I hope everyone is thriving in school and using all the skills they learned in wilderness! Kirsten Silfvenius

Hello Hivers! Enjoying my semester studying and traveling all over India. I have been in Jaipur, which is mostly a desert; it is hard to imagine camp covered in snow while I am sweating in 90 degree heat! After a few months of taking classes in Jaipur and traveling around India, I headed to Sikkim, which is a part of India right next to Nepal. I live in the Himalayan Mountains at The Mountain Institute and am staying busy researching women’s health. I’m planning on bringing back some new additions for the Hive farm... perhaps some monkeys and elephants? A big hello to all the bouncy bouncy Dolphins, and the beautiful swim goddesses, I love you all! Megan Streeter

Greetings! Camp is still fresh in my mind, and I often think about many of you, and the amazing summer of Hive 2010. Participating in the Rainbow Trout swim, and the Lake Fairlee and Morey Marathon runs at camp this year have encouraged me to get back into my competitive sport of triathlon (swim, bike, run). I’m now training for a big race in February 2011, to be held at a place called Falls Creek, which is a ski resort during our Australian winter months (yes, it does snow in July in Australia!) While for many of you it will be snowy and cold in February, it will be summer here in Australia. Hopefully I will see you all at Hive 2011!!! What’s the buzz? Tell us what’s happening!

I have been very busy in my “studio” aka garage, creating and making stuff for a few art shows that are coming up. Yesterday, while working, I was just thinking about the first time I learned to enamel, which was at Aloha camp in 1988. I had no idea how to copper enamel, and yet it was, and still is, one of the more popular projects at the camps. So I had to learn how to do it. One of my fellow counselors who had been a camper showed me how to do it. So now, 22 years later, here I am in El Paso TX, using enamel in a lot of my own art work. This always makes me think about all the other wonderful things I have learned at the camps. Not only do the camps expose campers to all those wonderful learning experiences, but the counselors also get to try new things out too, no matter what our age. The summers at camp allow me to take a break from what I do the rest of the year, try new things, get a little crazy in a fun way and just step back and take a look at what is really important in my life. One recent highlight I have is that one of my necklaces has been accepted into a new 2011 book, 500 Silver Jewellery Designs, published by Lark Books. I also have work in 500 Earrings (Lark, 2007). So if you are poking around the book stores... Aloha, Helen Dorion

I’m writing to you from sunny Queensland, Australia.where the days are getting hotter and hotter and summer is surely on its way. It’s hard to imagine that everything is the other way around for most of you, and you’re getting ready for winter now!

After camp finished this year I spent a bit of time traveling in the USA, and guess where I went?! The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - the new Harry Potter theme park in Florida! It was so fun to wander up and down Hogsmeade, ride on dragons and drink butterbeer. Although I have to say that I don’t think it was quite as exciting as having our very own howlers in the dining room, our own quidditch pitch on the play field and our own chocolate frog cards at camp! I can’t wait to see what else next summer’s Hive Quidditch day will involve.

Since I’ve been back home in Australia I’ve started teaching English to international students, so that takes up most of my time now. I love it and I get to play all sorts of fun games with them. I’m not sure yet what I’llbe doing after January though, it’s a big mystery and might even involve me living overseas again. What I’m sure of is, that wherever I am, I’ll spend most of my time dreaming about Summer 2011 at Hive! Margaret Pennoyer and I are already talking about activities for the fantastic group of campers we’ll have on the Hilander hillside next year. I hope you’re all getting as excited as we are!

Wishing you all a happy holiday season and missing you all like crazy!Love & Buzz,Catherine Bleakley

P.S. Special shout-out to the Upper Hilander shack of 2010 - I hope you’re putting your toilet busting skills to good use in the real world!

Aloha Lolanders!!! I am writing to you from cold, cold Vermont. It has already snowed several times! Who would’ve thought that just months ago we were DYING of heat here? Remember when we would have impromptu unit swims to cool us down? Or when every activity offered water games because it was so hot? It’s hard to imagine that now.

I am almost done with college—I graduate at the end of January, and then I am not exactly sure what is in store for me. Hopefully I will be travelling in Europe for a couple of months and then working at a museum in Venice, Italy. But guess what, I will be back just in time for camp next summer!!

I am already thinking of all the fun things the Lolanders are going to do next summer, from blueberry picking to playing atop the S.S Elfin. I still think about the time we went blueberry picking and had a mummy-berry contest. We had so much fun!

Have you girls been thinking about the Kanakas lately? Remember all of the houses you built for them and the letters you wrote to them? I wonder what they do in the winter when it is so cold? I bet they are already working hard and getting camp ready for the Hivers to come back for 2011.

And we too can start thinking about 2011! Do you still have your bracelets we made with your goal beads on them? Are you still wearing them? I am so impressed with all that you girls accomplished in one summer—from passing ranks to performing in the talent show. What is your goal for next summer? It’s time to start thinking about the new risks we want to face and the new memories we will most definitely create, and, of course, all the new friendships we will make!

I just can’t wait! Miss you all!Aloha,Jamie Rosenfeld

Dear Dolphins!!Hi! I hope you are all well and are enjoying the Fall at home and school. I miss you all tremendously and think about you and our fantastic summer 2010 ALL the time. I spent some time in Virginia with Allison Maryan and Molly Baird and then in Vermont with Kathy Plunkett, the other Unit heads, Erin Smith, and the Sperry family a few weeks ago and we literally talked about camp memories the entire time. It’s funny how seeing camp friends immediately gives you a thousand things to reminisce, talk and giggle about, not mention all the warm and fuzzies!

I am currently in New Zealand where the summer season is just beginning! It is strange feeling the season change from spring to summer in November. It’s confusing because usually when the weather turns warm I know camp is just around the corner. Unfortunately, we still have a few months to go until June (trust me I am counting down everyday!) In the meantime, I have been thinking about how new experiences can feel kind of weird at first (such as summer in November in a foreign country!) but, with a little bit of camp courage, it can provide the opportunity for SO much.

I often think about moments of courage during our summer; for example, I saw one of you go up and make a new friend, or try out for the play even though you were nervous, or try a new activity, or go on that overnight hike, or jump off the diving board even though you were scared. All those little moments of courage certainly help me along the way! I have my red beads of courage pinned to my backpack (and my flower in my hair) and whenever I meet a challenge, whether it is the last 50 yards of a bike ride up a mountain, or trying a new food,

or speaking to a new person to make a new friend, OR (and yes believe it or not I am actually considering doing this!) taking that leap to bungee jump, eeeek! I like to think I am taking a little bit of camp courage along with me that enables me to push myself out of my comfort zone, make the right decision even if it is not the easiest, and do that little bit more to make the most of every opportunity, big or small.

So Hivers, as you all continue through this year and on the way back towards another wonderful summer at Hive, I hope you are all carrying your beads and memories and using them when you need that extra special bit of courage.

I cannot wait to see you for summer 2011. Until then, lots and lots of love and hugs,Lucy Reynard

Hello Hilanders!!!I miss you all so much! I hope everyone is having a great fall. After camp I moved back to New York City where I started my winter job, to fill the nine months until my real job begins again! I am teaching pre-kindergarten which I am enjoying a lot- but not quite as much as camp. Much of my time is spent reading or telling stories to my students and more often than not a story from camp will sneak its way in.

I love to tell the story of the hottest evening of the hottest summer, when everyone came down the hill for dinner and there was so much snow that Hive needed to have a snow day! I tell them how the Comb was so cold that it turned into an ice skating rink, there was so much snow that we were able to make snowmen that bore a surprising resemblance to certain counselors.

I tell them of another evening when the Hilander unit hiked up Aloha Hill where they suddenly transformed into several dance troups and performed choreographed dances to songs that weren’t announced beforehand. Then, after eating dinner, these dancers went to an outdoor spa complete with massages, nails, and tea tree hair treatment. As the sky began to look ominous the spa was paused for a hike down the hill and into the Comb minutes before a thunderstorm began.

I can’t even begin to imagine the stories that we will tell after Hive 2011! Love and Aloha,Margaret Pennoyer

Dear Anti-Qs!By now some of you have undoubtedly heard the lonely duck song or, as I have recently dubbed it, “Ode to Ye Lonely Duck.” I thought that instead of the normal Buzz letter where I tell you about my life, how much I miss camp, and how much snow there is in Boston, I would simply finish the lonely duck song. Who doesn’t love a silly and slightly pointless camp song?

I think it will work best as a counting song in case any Hivers have forgotten, or never learned (only kidding), how to count. With your help maybe it will even be added to the songbook. Don’t worry about learning the tune right now because it’s pretty basic; let’s just make sure the words are A+. So the song begins like this…

I feel like it should end with, “and a partridge in a pear tree” but I guess that really wouldn’t make any sense. I’m going to need your help to finish the song so be sure to think of some great verses over the winter for 7, 8, 9, and 10. I’ll be taking submissions starting on June 29th, 2011—just stick to the format. Well, I miss you all very much and can’t wait to be back at camp. Only 258 days until Hive 2011—get ready to be new Anti-Qs, Hilanders!Aloha (translation: lots of love),Madeline Williams

Q: Why are teddy bears never hungry?A: Because they’re always stuffed.

One lonely duck, sitting in the lakeQuack quack quack, he is so lonely.

And now for the new verses…

Two little pigs, playing in the barnQuack quack quack, they are so muddy.

Three little Hivers, living in a tentQuack quack quack, this is a tent family.

Four Billy goats, sleeping in a stallQuack quack quack, who is Billy?

Five baby turtles, swimming in the lakeQuack quack quack, they are just babies.

Six long miles, up the mountain sideQuack quack quack, we made the summit.

Aloha Elfins! I miss you all so much! I hope that everyone has had a good start to the new school year. I can’t believe it is already November. I am counting down the days until next summer at Hive! I’m teaching preschool this year, which has been a ton of fun. I have even taught my class a few camp songs, which they love to sing during the day! I love hearing them because it reminds me of all the fun mornings we spent singing in the Comb. I’m writing to you from

Vermont, but it is much colder than those beautiful sunny days we had this summer. We have already had snow this year! Yesterday we even had some hail!

One of the things I miss most during the winter is not being able to sleep outside. Do you remember the Elfin overnight in the Kanaka Village? We played so many games that night and shared so many stories too! I have so many amazing memories of the Elfins of 2010. You each did so much in your first summer at Hive. Every single one of you did something that was completely new. I can’t wait until next summer to see all of the other new things you try!

With all of the cold weather, I made a fire in my fireplace a few nights ago to stay nice and toasty. It made me think of your last night at Hive and all the special activities that we got to do together. The biggest surprise of the night was when the Kanakas left us a cozy fire burning in Fernsworth and the supplies for s’mores! It was so much fun to sit by the fire and listen to stories as we toasted our marshmallows. I can’t wait to see what surprises the Kanakas have in store for us next summer! I hope that you all have a ton of fun this winter. I can’t wait to see you all again next summer! Love,Ali Ward

Q. How does a mouse feel after a bath?

A. Squeaky clean.

Dear Hivers,Greetings from Vermont. I miss you all very much

and I hope everyone is having a great year. Are

you able to take your mind off camp long enough

to pay at least a little attention in school? I know

sometimes I find it hard not to think about rest hour

when 2 o’clock rolls around, and hard to put on my

boots sometimes when I’d rather be taking off my

shoes to hop in the lake!

Bofoz, Matt and I are trying to keep warm now that

winter is on the way. Matt has been cooking a lot for

us but he is still missing some pots...I wonder if any

of you know where they are? I’m thinking that as

long as no one is using it over the winter, I might as well bring Table 1 down to my dining room. But I guess I

wouldn’t have the view...or the company.

I hope you are all holding on to the courage you earned this summer, whether it was going off the diving board,

going on stage, or going up to someone to tell them something that’s hard to say. For me, it was going down

the hill at horseback riding in the middle of the scariest thunderstorm ever! I still have a red ribbon on my

wrist in case I need help remembering. Can’t wait to hear what brave things you’ve done over the year.

Aloha,

Erin and Bofoz Program Coordinators Q: What do you get when you cross a parrot and a centipede?

A: A walkie-talkie!

Alohafrom our HIVE Program Coordinator

Would you like to help us spread the message of the Alohas? We are always looking for ways to interest families in the value of camping and in our quality programs for children. Even families with children not yet ready for camp can begin to think about including a summer at Aloha, Hive or Lanakila in their future. If you know of families who might be interested in knowing more, we can send you brochures or a video. Or perhaps you might be willing to gather interested families together; we would be happy to come with slides and stories. Please contact one of the directors or [email protected].
