Excellence in education. Foundations for life. Aloha Ke Akua Issue #32 May 3, 2017 May Day Program Please be sure that you have read the May Day Reminders that were sent home last week and are attached here with the newsletter. Students should report to the theater on Friday at 7:30 am, in their costumes and wearing slippers only (no shoes). Parents will not be admitted until 7:45 am. Students will sit with their class and will be dismissed following the show (around 10:30 am) after you check in with the teacher. We are looking forward to a great show! Art in Bloom It will soon be time for our third annual “Art in Bloom” event, which will take place on Saturday, May 13, from 4:30 – 7:30 pm. The event will feature an exhibit of SHS student collections in various media, the students’ Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Poem entries, an art and literature themed silent auction, an interactive art project, and a juried art show judged by local artists with prizes awarded. If you would like more information about how to enter the art show or if you know a business who would like to donate to the silent auction, please contact Yvette at 808-298-9679. Admission to the event is free and we hope to see all of our families there! Guest Speaker Yesterday, we had a special guest speaker, Ron Heagy, who came to talk to students in grades 3 – 8 about having a positive attitude and never giving up. Ron is a quadriplegic who broke his neck while surfing right before his 18 th birthday and who now dedicates his life to helping others and spreading a positive message about life. He used L.I.F.E. as an acronym to challenge the students to live with: Love, Interdependence, Faith, and Enthusiasm. You can find out more about Ron and his message by visiting his Facebook page or viewing his videos on YouTube. Teacher Appreciation WeekThank you to all of the amazing parents and students who organized and contributed to special treats for the teachers and staff this week. The doors look marvelous and we have been eating well all week. We appreciate all that you have done to make this week so special!

Teacher Car Wash Carwash volunteers needed! Hopsing is organizing a Car Wash for teachers and needs some volunteers to help. He had to postpone on Monday because of rain, and the new date is now next Thursday, May 11. Just one hour of your time would be greatly appreciated and a wonderful way to show the teachers your gratitude. If you can bring a bucket or towels with you to help, that would be great!

Book Fair Thank you to Kristen Wheeler and all of the volunteers and helpers who organized, set-up, ran, and took down the Book Fair. Thank you also to all of the dads who came to shop with their students on Monday. We had a great turnout and raised money for teacher books and supplies. Happy Reading!

PTG NewsThe monthly meeting for May will be on Wed., May 10, at 1:15 pm in the art room. All parents are invited to attend. Voting for next year’s PTG board members will take place then. We hope to see you there!

Yearbook Orders Order forms for this year’s yearbook were sent home with students yesterday and one is also attached to this newsletter. The cost is $25 per book and orders should be turned in by next Wednesday, May 10. Thank you to Mrs. Coon and Laurie DeGama for all their work in getting the yearbook put together!

Graduation News It will soon be time for all of our end of year and graduation celebrations. Please be sure that you are reading all of the news and notes sent home by your teachers and check the “Dates to Remember” for more information.

Refrigerator Needed The refrigerator in the teacher’s lounge is on it’s last legs. It has been making funny noises all week and we are afraid that it will soon stop working. If anyone has or knows of a used refrigerator that is in good shape that you would be willing to donate to the school, we would be very appreciative. You can contact Becky or Jan in the school office if you can help.

Rat Lungworm Disease We are staying informed from the Department of Health with all of the latest news and warnings about the spread of Rat Lungworm disease here on the island. Please be sure that you are washing all locally grown produce well and teaching children not to pick up slugs outside. More information is available online.
