‘Loving learning, making a difference’

Dear Parents and Carers,

We hope you all had a lovely Easter break. We are now well into the sum-

mer term with lots of exciting events ahead of us.

Thank you to everyone who attended Mrs Stephen’s Phonics meeting last

week – it was good to see so many parents and carers there.

The children’s new topics have started with a bang. Pets at Home visited

Year 1 last week with some rabbits and guinea pigs that the children han-

dled and petted for their ‘Paws, Claws and Whiskers’ topic. Year 4 have

been making Roman Coins this week and Year 3 have been learning songs

about the Stone Age. Children in Year 2 are busy planting vegetables and

observing the life cycle of real butterflies for their topic on growing – ‘The

Scented Garden’ – and year 5 have begun designing fairground rides for

‘Scream Machine’.

This week Mrs Tong took another class – Year 4 Magpies - to the Turner

Contemporary as part of our ‘My Classroom is a Gallery’ arts project. We

also have some creative successes to share with you – both Grayson and

Heath in Year 2 have won art prizes in the past few weeks. Grayson’s paint-

ing came first in the Rotary Club Primary art competition age 5-7, whilst

Heath’s collage was shortlisted as part of the prestigious Portfolio compe-

tition, in association with the Turner Gallery. Well done to both of you!

Year 5 have been preparing for their residential trip to Kingswood next

week. I look forward to seeing who has the most ridiculously enormous

suitcase when we wave them off on Tuesday morning, and I look forward to

seeing how they are getting on when I pop down to visit them on Wednes-

day next week.

This week has also been a successful week in sporting news, with our Year 2

pupils coming third in the Athletics festival and our Year 5/6 Rugby team

being awarded the ‘Fair Play Award’ in recognition of their maturity and

good sportsmanship – well done to all of you.

Don’t forget that there is a bank holiday on Monday. We hope you enjoy

the long weekend and look forward to seeing everyone on Tuesday.

School Attendance

Absence and lateness has a direct impact on learning. The school works together with

Kent County Council’s School Liaison Officer to reduce pupil absence. Please support us

by only allowing children time off when they are ill. If you are unsure as to whether or

not you should send your child into school then please view:

https://www.nhs.uk/live-well/healthy-body/is-my-child-too-ill-for-school/

If your child is absent due to a doctor, dental or hospital appointment we ask that evi-

dence is provided. Please ask for an appointment slip from the relevant practice.

All absences should be reported to school on the very first day by calling the school of-

fice on 01843 290050 by 9am. If we have not heard from you by 10am we will start to

call all the contact numbers that you have provided in order to gain an explanation for

the absence. It is therefore of the upmost importance that you ensure we have up to

date contact details.

Can we please remind parents/carers that the school does not authorise term time holi-

days unless there are exceptional circumstances. All parents/carers need to apply for

authorisation before the proposed holiday is taken, the necessary form can be request-

ed from the school office.

If a child’s absence does not improve despite home/school discussions and notification

the case will be passed to the School Liaison Officer and legal action may be taken.

Sporting News—Miss Delderfield

On Saturday 27th April two rugby teams took part in 4 hours of rugby at Upton School. Once again the children

played some fantastic rugby with some great tries scored. There were two trophies up for grabs, best banner tro-

phy and fair play trophy. The fair play trophy is voted by other schools for the team that has shown fair play, good

sportsmanship and respect for other teams, refs and team mates. I was so proud that Palm Bay had been voted by

other schools to receive the fair play trophy alongside Cliftonville school. This trophy isn’t down to winning Rugby

matches it’s how the children conduct themselves when on the pitch. Both teams shook the team they were playing

hands, the refs hand and also gave three cheers. Palm Bay showed great sportsmanship and even in defeat they pre-

sented themselves in a positive way. A massive thank you as always to John and Lee who have taught and supported

the children throughout all of the rugby fixtures and even showed them how to play in the teachers match. Well

done to all the parents who came and supported the children….at least it didn’t rain. Lastly thank you to the children

who took part on the day, you are amazing and I couldn’t be any prouder of you!!

Thursday 2nd May was the turn of some year 2 children in the Infant Agility competition held at Ursuline College. It

was a great morning with lots of different activities involving running, throwing and jumping. The children had prac-

tised some of the events in PE so knew what to expect in some of them, they didn’t disappoint with Sophia and Flor-

ence producing the highest score in speed bounce out of all of the different schools. All children gave 100% and

were focussed and determined to do their best – which they did!! We came 3rd out of 10 schools which is an amazing

achievement and the children were two points off of second place which was so close. Well done to all the children

that took part you are all awesome. Thank you to Miss Thorne who came with us and supported the children.

On Mondays there is a Wildcats girls football session taking place here at Palm Bay. It is run by Margate football

club and runs from 4.30 – 5.30pm. It is a FREE session and is aimed at girls aged 5-12. You can just turn up or you

can book by going to https://form.jotformeu.com Please note that it will not be run on Monday 6th May due to Bank

Holiday.

Tonight sees the first of three Athletics competitions held at The Royal Harbour School. The competition is open to

any children in years 3-6 and registration starts at 5.30pm with a 6pm start. The athletes will compete in 50/75m

sprint, 400/600 run, standing long jump and Mega howler throw. If you would like to take part it costs £3 and you

can register on the night or go to www.thanetac.co.uk to get more details and an entry form. The other dates are 7th

June and 5th July and there are medals for the top 3 in each event and overall for each age group for the series.

Quick reminder…….

There will be NO run before school (Wednesday and Friday), athletics club (Tuesday) and sport before school

(Thursday) as I will accompanying the children on their residential visit to Kingswood. All back to normal the

following week.
