Alpha Lambda Phi Alpha ALUMNI NEWSLETTER May 1st, 2017 Introducing our new Alumni Newsletter! Letter from the 2016-2017 President: Rhiannon Johnson Dear Alumni Sisters, I am so proud to introduce Pai Miller, who has been elected to be the Alumni Relations Chair for the 2017-2018 school year. Throughout my time in Alpha, I have learned both how extensive and rich our alumni chapter is, and how little we appreciate it. Pai has a promising vision for ways in which we can increase our interaction with our alumni, and this newsletter is just one of them. As I graduate in less than a month, I look forward to receiving it soon! As the end of my time at Occidental has been approaching ever more rapidly, I have been appreciating more and more each of the little things that has made it so amazing. Things like the late-night frozen yogurt runs with the house girls and laughing hysterically at faux pas every week are what will make graduating so bittersweet. Alpha has been the single most empowering and formative force over the last four years, and I cannot imagine entering "the real world" without the countless tools I have gained from my sisters. Throughout numerous job interviews over the last few weeks, I have had to restrain myself from answering every question with a story about Alpha. When I was pledging, I knew I was joining a highly intelligent and hilarious group of women, but I had no idea that through it I would learn what it means to be an effective leader, how to work well with a diverse group, what it means to be a woman in our society today, and so much about myself. Alpha is an organization that will always be close to my heart, and I hope that I can continue to contribute to it as an alum, so that many new generations of our sisters may have an experience as influential as mine. We hope to continue to foster a stronger relationship between the active and alumni chapters because sisterhood doesn't end at graduation! Alpha love, Rhiannon Johnson President, 2016-2017 1

ALUMNI NEWSLETTER May 1st, 2017

Introducing our new Alumni Newsletter! Letter from the 2016-2017 President: Rhiannon Johnson

Dear Alumni Sisters,

I am so proud to introduce Pai Miller, who has been elected to be the Alumni Relations Chair for the 2017-2018 school year.

Alpha love,

Rhiannon Johnson

President, 2016-2017

Alumna Achievement

Congratulations to Alpha Alumna  Kylie Schuyler, Class of ’82, for receiving Occidental’s 2017 Alumni Seal Award for Service to the Community! We’re proud to have you as a sister!

“As a volunteer with NGOs overseas, Kylie participated in efforts to incentivize parents to enroll girls in newly built schools, as opposed to just boys. When she returned to the States, Kylie used this revelatory experience when founding GLOW House in Santa Ana. GLOW House serves girls in grades 5-12 through daily after school programming that includes research-based mentoring, literacy and art activities. From there, Global GLOW has grown to operate throughout the U.S. and in over 20 countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Central and South America.” ~http://www.oxy.edu/news/2017-alumni-seal-awards-announced

What is Project S.A.F.E.?  “Project S.A.F.E. (for a Sexual Assault Free Environment) is a prevention and intervention support program dedicated to ending sexual violence on Occidental's campus.  We seek to inspire and cultivate a culture of care by providing resources, advocacy and educational programming related to issues of sexual assault, dating violence and stalking.”   [ http://www.oxy.edu/project-safe ]

Interview with Sonnet Pradel,  2016-17 Project S.A.F.E. Advocate

 Alpha’s Partnership with Project S.A.F.E.:

“ Project S.A.F.E. called for a meeting with a representative from each Greek organization. For Alpha I volunteered. We talked about the strengths and weaknesses of each of our programs, and how we could build off each other to create a program individually that worked for each of our organizations the best. After a few weeks, I met with Dana [Michels], who is the program coordinator of Project S.A.F.E.. We tried to come up with a style of program that would best suit Alpha and all of the members. What we eventually came up with was focus-group style meetings, so we planned to split the chapter up into six groups with each group facilitated by a focus leader. We also talked about some of the stigmas and myths that come with being in a sorority and how we might combat those or at least educate ourselves through a small group conversation.”

Where we have room to improve:

“I would like to see our members learn how to talk about this and other difficult topics in a manner that isn’t harmful to survivors. Beyond the threat of outside incidents that might be dangerous to our members, we

also have to create a safe space within the house intentionally, rather than letting unintentional slips slide by. That can be just as harmful and just as traumatic, especially for someone who’s experiencing or has experienced trauma.  That doesn’t come from a hurtful intention, but it can be very detrimental. Another big issue we have within Alpha is follow through. We can have these huge conversations that everybody comes out to, and it’s like ‘Wow, that was really meaningful, I’m really glad we did that, thank you for organizing that’ and then nobody shows up to Take Back the Week. I think finding the strength within Alpha to show up is really important.”  Changes we’re working towards:

“Something we’ve just implemented is a Project S.A.F.E. / Social Awareness suggestion box, a shoebox somewhere in the house, anonymous. Basically, you could submit

any concerns you might have that you didn’t feel comfortable bringing up personally, or if you didn’t know where to go.

And another thing that we’re hoping to implement is a better sober sister / sober brother system. Ideally, I’d like to see it go Greek-wide, but we’re gonna start with Alpha because that’s what we can control. We want to do some sort of identification for our sober sisters and sober brothers, especially again for our new members, who might know you but they not feel comfortable coming up to you. So ideally, the situation would look like a sticker, or a button, or for our more informal events even a T-shirt that you would be required to wear for the entirety of the event. Essentially, the purpose would just be to make them more visible. Hopefully it would go Greek-wide or campus-wide. We’d like to see a unified approach to that, so having the same button, the same shirt, whatever that might be. So for instance if a lot of Alphas have left [the event] and you’re still with SAE and you don’t know who to talk to for a crisis, you can look for a sober brother and talk to them.”

Alpha-Famous: Oxy’s Got Talent!

“Alpha Presents: Oxy's Got Talent” is the newest incarnation of our annual on-campus philanthropy event previously titled Alpha Male. This event is a talent show where contestants of all genders can perform, and consists of two rounds:  a talent portion and a questions and answers portion. 100% of the proceeds from our T-shirt, ticket, and raffle sales go to Planned Parenthood. Many local Eagle Rock favorites such as Spitz, Scoops, Town Pizza, Cafe de Leche, Señor Fish, and Zweet happily donated gift cards for raffle prizes. Since it is benefiting Planned Parenthood, we also had a PP rep give a short speech about the Pasadena & San Gabriel Valley PP and the organization as a whole. The other judges are hilarious first-year Politics professor Edward Kammerer and Micaela Rosato-Stevens, Oxy’s Planned Parenthood Club President.” - Kate Clark, Philanthropy Co-Chair.

Much love to everyone who supported this event, and huge thanks  to all of our incredible contestants, whose talents included singing, dancing, and spoken word. Congratulations to our talent show winners, Active Cate Selna and Ian Zunt!  Through this event we were able to donate ~$1000 to Planned  Parenthood.
