Like many of you, I anxiously awaited the news from the 36th General Congregation of the Society of Jesus. Who would be the new Father General? What would he see as his priorities? How will his leadership guide us all, and in particular, Alpha Sigma Nu? On October 16, 2016, the Congregation elected Father Arturo Sosa Abascal, SJ, as Superior General. Father Sosa obtained a licentiate in philosophy from l’Università Cattolica Andrés Bello in 1972. He later obtained a doctorate in political science from l’Università Centrale del Venezuela in 1990. So, it is not surprising that in two of Father Sosa’s initial major speeches, he chose to focus on the “intellectual apostolate” of the Society of Jesus.

Born in Venezuela, Father Sosa has spent much of his life as a Jesuit in academia, as professor and rector, with his research and teaching in political science.

At the University of Antonio Ruiz de Montoya in Lima, Peru, he explained:

What we call the intellectual apostolate is central to the mission of the Society today, as it has been from its inception. The complexity of the world’s problems makes intellectual reflection even more urgent and central, in order to render quality service to humanity…The Society of Jesus, from its birth, has been associated with spiritual depth, the intellectual apostolate, closeness to the poor,

and an intellectual understanding of the human processes. Today, it confirms this way of proceeding, which leads to a deepening commitment in the intellectual apostolate.

Father Sosa reiterated that the Jesuits were founded by men studying at a university, and that they have always emphasized that forming the intellect is as critical as spiritual formation, resulting in work that studies the human condition of suffering and addresses the causes of that condition – a faith that promotes justice.

“Our intellectual work is ‘apostolic’ work when we see it and when we perform it in light of these four characteristics described by Father Sosa (see red box on page 2), and these four characteristics are not always the way we think of the academy,” explains Michael Garanzini, SJ (Saint Louis ‘71), Secretary for Higher Education for the Society of Jesus. “When it is concerned with real people and real world problems, when it operates for a ‘bigger purpose’ under a larger vision of human potential and the purpose of our human communities, this work is apostolic.”

As did Fathers General Kolvenbach and Nicolás before him, Father Sosa reminds us that the intellectual apostolate must be present in all the works of the Jesuits…in the university and

When it is accomplished in the world, that is, when it finds meaning outside itself, by not being enclosed in its interest but by finding meaning in people, themes, and the problems of

humanity, and consequently of the Church.

When it has an evangelical orientation, because it is affected by what happens to human beings and creation. Intellectual work is an apostolate because it is clearly and explicitly

directed towards the constructions of a world closer to the characteristics of the Kingdom of God.

When one is aware of the need to carry out this work in collaboration with others. Intellectual work is an apostolate when it is carried out in the open…When it is able to interact

with other disciplines, enrich other perspectives and visions of the world, science and culture.

Intellectual work in the Society is apostolate when it is experienced as a received mission, as a sending. As a result, it is performed as a service. It does not seek recognition or

glory from people or institutions. It is an intellectual effort made by apostles, that is to say, by persons, Jesuits or others, men or women, who live it as a mission.

Father General Arturo Sosa, SJ Abridged speech from University of Antonio Ruiz de Montoya March 23, 2017

Intellectual Work is an Apostolate:

MARCH 2017 BOARD MEETING

beyond, “In short, intellectual work is an apostolate if it keeps alive the link between deep reflection, concern for peoples’ lives, and the building of a more human and Christian world.”

As a Jesuit university alumna, his words resonate. My professors, having been ‘formed’ as Jesuits, sought not only to educate us but to train us to look beyond the university to our communities and their human needs…to see and act on the connection between knowledge and action.

“Acting without thinking,” says Father Sosa, “becomes so often useless and even dangerous. Thinking detached from the reality of social and pastoral action is a futile and dangerous exercise.”

How is Father Sosa speaking to Alpha Sigma Nu and its over 70,000 members living in the world today? While his speeches at Vidyajyoti College of Theology in Dehli, India, and the University of Antonio Ruiz de Montoya in Lima, Peru, were geographically far afield from our Chapters and from the vast majority of our members, Father Sosa speaks very specifically to the values of our Jesuit honor society:

I am convinced that creation is not over yet, and that, we human beings, are the creators responsible for ensuring that people can find the conditions suitable for a dignified life… This is possible if each person understands himself as part of a community and experiences relationships with others as a dimension of himself. This experience impels one to make one’s own contribution to the common good regardless of age, ability, education, social status, ideology, culture, religion, or the colour of one’s skin.

At our induction, we pledged to be committed to intellectual integrity and the pursuit of wisdom, and to be loyal to the moral, social, and religious ideals of our Jesuit education. We committed ourselves to the well-being of others and to serving them. We vowed to do all of this for the greater honor and glory of God. Clearly, we committed ourselves to the intellectual apostolate.

There is great power in our pledge and in our collective commitment. Let us be a community of creators..

The Alpha Sigma Nu Board of Directors met March 17-19, 2017, to discuss the Society’s mission priorities, financial needs, and Chapter and Club programming. The Board meets by teleconference monthly and in person at Triennial Conferences and at the midpoint between conferences. Items on the agenda included strategic international expansion, ASN’s communication strategy, current Chapter programs, member benefits, and alumni resources.

The Alpha Sigma Nu Board members are President Kerry Dziubek (Marquette ’90), Vice President David Morrissey (Loyola Marymount ’63), Treasurer Michael Bizzario (Fairfield ’94), Secretary Eva Marie Carney (U. of San Francisco ‘79), Thomas Regan, SJ (Fairfield ’84), Maggie Lund (Scranton ’84), Michael Braden, SJ (Saint Peter’s ’10), Cassandra Clark-Theirl (Holy Cross ’01), Jennifer Dominiquini (Scranton ’93), Gregory Kalscheur, SJ (Boston College ’13), Thomas Nolan (Saint Louis ’01), Annie Selak (Santa Clara ’04), Dung Tran (Gonzaga ’11), Michelle Pérez (Saint Peter’s ’14), and Michael Reardon (Marquette ’15).

LOYOLA UNIVERSITY ANDALUCIA – 2017 CHAPTER OF THE YEAR

FORDHAM UNIVERSITY

LOYOLA UNIVERSITY MARYLAND

When the Board of Alpha Sigma Nu celebrated the first induction of the new Chapter at Loyola Andalucia, little did they know that just seven months later, they would be congratulating this nascent Chapter as the 2017 Chapter of the Year!

The Alpha Sigma Nu Chapter of the Year Award honors the Chapter whose programming for the year has been truly outstanding in embodying, in meaningful and innovative ways, the tenets of scholarship, loyalty, and service. The LUA Chapter impressed the selection committee with a strong service component focusing on refugees, executive boards working on two campuses, and its critical partnership with Campus Ministry.

Their programs included:

• Conference on refugees • Lecture on the Jesuits in Paraguay• Starting the “Loyola Green Club”• Initiating a host program to match

members with international students• Holding a school supply drive for

Moroccan and Algerian refugees• Spiritual Exercises Weekend Retreat

for E-board

• Working to promote international collaboration with Marquette and Sogang

• Visiting all freshmen classes to set ASN membership as a goal

Congratulations to Faculty Adviser Borja Martin Garrido (Loyola Andalucia ’16), Ignacio Garrido Cruz (Loyola Andalucia ’16), Francisco de Santiago Ruiz (Loyola Andalucia ’16), Julia Linares Martin

(Loyola Andalucia ’16), and their fellow Chapter officers on receiving ASN’s fourth annual Chapter of the Year Award. “This has been such an honor for us,” said Francisco. “We have worked to take the best of Alpha Sigma Nu and put it together with the culture and concerns in Spain and in Europe. We are committed to strengthening the Chapter to ensure future generations of LUA members.”

The Fordham Chapter’s notable programs included multiple collaborations on service with both campus and Bronx service organizations, organized 70 volunteers to visit retired Jesuits, and held two gatherings with University President Joseph McShane, SJ (Le Moyne ’71) exclusively for members. Congratulations to Chapter officers Nazifa Nasim (Fordham ’16), Nicole Benevento (Fordham ’16), John Moriarty (Fordham ’16), Margaret Fisher (Fordham ’16), and Faculty Adviser Michael Trerotolo (Fordham ’16).

After University President Brian Linnane, SJ (Holy Cross ’95), welcomed the Chapter to the Jesuit residence to kick off the year, the Loyola Maryland Chapter frequently collaborated with the Center for Community Service and Justice on service programs in the community. The Chapter hosted a panel of Jesuit alumni addressing how to live Jesuit values in the “real world” and held its annual spring lecture event. Congratulations to Chapter officers Scott Cannon (Loyola Maryland ’16), Jamie Surgent-Nahay (Loyola Maryland ’16), Michael Jones (Loyola Maryland ’16), Brooke Dugan (Loyola Maryland ’16), Briana Stuhlman (Loyola Maryland ’16), Grace Giannattasio (Loyola Maryland ’16), Faculty Adviser Frank Haig, SJ (Wheeling Jesuit ’66), and Chapter Coordinator Anita Podles.

INTRODUCING THE NEW SEELOS GRANTThanks to funding from the Blessed Francis X. Seelos, C.Ss.R, Fund, Alpha Sigma Nu was pleased to announce the Seelos Grant this spring, founded to promote Ignatian-inspired student leadership. The Seelos Grant removes financial barriers for student ASN members who wish to participate in Ignatian leadership programs.  The grants provide funding for student members’ attendance with the intention that they enhance their skills as Chapter and campus leaders, change-makers and Jesuit collaborators.  Student members can apply for a grant to cover costs of programs in line with the mission of ASN.

This year, the Seelos Grant is helping student members attend the following programs:

Ignatian Justice Summit: Brings together students from Jesuit and other Catholic universities who are passionate about driving change for more socially just local and global communities. The program provides formation in the areas of leadership, social justice, and Ignatian spirituality. www.ignatiansolidarity.net/programs/university-leaders-summit

National Jesuit Student Leadership Conference: Gathers student leaders from various Jesuit schools and universities together to examine current student issues and explore ways to address them, strengthen leadership skills, and discover how to better serve their colleges and universities in the Jesuit tradition. www.njslc2017.com

Ignatian Family Teach-in for Justice:  Annual gathering for members of the Ignatian family- Jesuit Institutions and larger church- to come together in the context of social justice and solidarity to learn, reflect, pray, network, and advocate together. www.ignatiansolidarity.net/iftj

Alpha Sigma Nu is proud to announce the eight current recipients of the Seelos Grant for 2017. These student members, representing seven Jesuit universities, will have the task of bringing back their experience and lessons to the local Alpha Sigma Nu Chapter. We look forward to hearing about their experiences and their Chapter events in the next school year.

Megan Martinez (Regis ’17) Megan plans to network with other Jesuit student leaders, learn from them, and continue these relationships beyond the conference. She hopes NJSLC provides her contacts and ideas she can use to benefit her Chapter.

Matthew Civilette (Le Moyne ’17) Chapter Vice-president in `17-18, he is looking forward to developing his leadership skills through a Jesuit lens, as well as learning how other Chapters increase member engagement.

Declan Murphy (Fordham ’17) Chapter Secretary in `17-18, Declan is looking to maximize ASN involvement at Fordham. He hopes to help develop a network of ASN leaders who can share ideas and coordinate national and international events.

Jose Aranda Alvarez (Loyola Andalucia ’16) On the e-board next year, and having studied at both Marquette and Sogang, he is particularly interested in brainstorming about increasing the ASN global connection and collaboration.

Maria Regla Villabos Ramila (Loyola Andalucia ’16) On the e-board next year, Regla hopes to improve her leadership skills. She has studied at Marquette and ICAM-Loyola in France and wants to further understand different countries and cultures.

Michael Harding (Fairfield ’17) Chapter President in `17-18, he is looking forward to substantive discussions on service and leadership and hopes to use lessons from NJSLC to empower his Chapter members to act entrepreneurially and collaboratively.

Jeffrey Kopaniasz (Marquette ’16) Chapter Alumni Relations Coordinator for `17-18, he looks forward to meeting other ASN leaders and learning what makes their Chapters effective and how to be a catalyst for the growth of the Marquette Chapter.

Kevin Nguyen (Rockhurst `17) As a son of Vietnamese refugees, he looks forward to attending the IJS to meet other Jesuit student leaders, develop his advocacy skills, and learn how to promote respectful discourse.

The Lunch & Learn webinar series for Alpha Sigma Nu members has proven to be a popular event. The second webinar took place on Thursday, March 30th and hosted speaker Tim Shriver, President of Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Mr. Shriver talked about what led him personally to the Jesuit Volunteer Corps and shared several stories from his time as president that highlight social justice, faith, and the unique attributes of Ignatian spirituality. If you missed it, you can still hear his talk! Go to www.alphasigmanu.org/news/video-from-lunch-learn-webinar.

Watch for news of the next webinar which will take place this fall.

LIVING THE IDEALS: Challenges & Calling

Like many of you, I have always considered being

well versed on current affairs a virtue, a citizen’s

responsibility, and a measure of my self-worth.

Growing up, we kept up with news of the world

through radio, television, and the daily newspaper.

Today, online newspapers, email alerts and social

media bring non-stop, up-to-the-minute news to

my computer, tablet, and phone. I am informed,

yes, but how am I internalizing and responding to

news of today’s pressing events?

Pope Francis and Father General Adolfo

Nicolás (Marquette ’15) have been tugging at

my sense of complacency. In describing the

globalization of indifference, Pope Francis states,

“Sadly, today’s information explosion does not

of itself lead to an increased concern for other

people’s problems… Indeed, the information

glut can numb people’s sensibilities and to some

degree downplay the gravity of the problems.”

The Father General similarly laments, “We

have more information than ever, but less ability

to think, to reflect, to digest that information.

So there is a globalization

of superficiality.”It is easy to point to young people, earphones in

and heads down, looking at their phones, as the

targets of these cautionary comments; however,

we all must consider how superficiality and the

globalization of indifference impact us. Christine

Firer Hinze (Marquette ’95), Director of Fordham

University’s Curran Center for American Catholic

Studies, cautions, “Superficiality (a vice of the

mind) and indifference (a vice of the affect) will

diminish our humanity by short-circuiting our

capacities for seeing, judging, and acting in

solidarity with neighbors.”

How can we, as individuals

and as the Jesuit Honor Society, respond to this

phenomenon? For me, the first step is silence…making time to consider how I personally have

become indifferent and superficial. Ms. Hinze

recommends a scrutiny, “I suggest that we

especially commit ourselves to a rigorous and

persistent examination of how well our personal

and institutional efforts cultivate

robust habits of solidarity with

suffering people in other areas

of the world.” As Father Nicolás states, “The

globalization of superficiality

challenges Jesuit higher

education to promote in creative new ways the depth of

thought and imagination that

are distinguishing marks of the

Ignatian tradition.”

Perhaps we, as members of Alpha Sigma Nu,

can experience this scrutiny and discernment

together. Let us together seek the depth of

thought, imagination, and faith to which Father

Nicolás calls us. Through silent personal

reflection and in dialogue with one another,

fellow stewards of the Ignatian tradition, perhaps

we can imagine ways to connect with those

around us and to collaborate on action. For in

solidarity, we affirm our humanity.

New Website Launched

Tour the website’s new features

in thisissueThe only honor society permitted to bear the name

Jesuit – it is a distinction that comes with a certain

responsibility. Alpha Sigma Nu provides members

a unique connection to the Society of Jesus

and a purposeful challenge to be collaborators

beyond graduation. As Jesuit numbers decline,

collaboration ensures their mission and values

continue to make a difference in the world through

those lay persons most exemplifying the teaching

of Jesuit higher education. These colleges and universities are not simply

looking to impart scholarly knowledge but rather a

holistic knowledge of self, spirituality, and humanity.

How can we as the Jesuit honor society inspire

tomorrow’s Jesuit-educated collaborators and

change makers?

Alpha Sigma Nu is tackling this question with new

energy. At 101 years old, the Society is continually

evolving to meet challenges. New collaborations

with Jesuit organizations have been forged.

Student leaders are finding a vibrant community

of fellow A∑N leaders both online and face-

to-face at A∑N Leadership Summits, Triennial

Conferences, and career networking events.

Alumni Clubs are enlivened, adding programming

and even expanding to new cities. A∑N is

utilizing ever-evolving ways to communicate with

members. The website has been refreshed, and

social media feeds are active and thriving. New

initiatives are adding meaning to membership

and connection to Jesuits, strengthening the

community of collaborators.

A great example of this new energy can be seen

in the Society’s latest resource for all members,

the Lunch & Learn webinar series. To kick

off the series, we welcomed Jim Martin, SJ,

(Weston ‘97) to speak to members on October

20th about his latest book Jesus: A Pilgrimage.

Members had special access to Fr. Martin and an

opportunity to ask him questions about his book,

Alpha Sigma Nu’s role in faith life, and how to

understand the humanity and divinity of Christ.

We look forward to our next Lunch & Learn

webinar this spring and other new initiatives to

inspire A∑N members to live out their pledge and

collaborate with the Jesuit network for positive

change. You can watch the video of Fr. Martin’s

webinar at www.alphasigmanu.org.

THE POWER OF THE PLEDGE

ALUMNI VOICES

THE CHAPTER OF THE YEAR IS...

ALUMNI CLUBS ARE THRIVING

100 CHAPTER PROGRAMS!

MAGIS MEDAL WINNERS

THE POWER OF THE PLEDGE

Felt in chapels from Loyola Marymount to Boston

College, from Campion to Spring Hill, a great hope

and a sense of the possible emanate in the room

when new inductees, led by Chapter presidents,

stand and recite the Alpha Sigma Nu pledge.

These new members promise “to do all this in light

of the Jesuit concern for the greater glory of God,”

pledging to use their intellect, experience, and heart

in the service of faith and the promotion of justice.

When did you make your pledge? As the mission

of Jesuit education has evolved over ASN’s 100

years, the pledge’s focus has moved from an

internal, campus focus to a wider commitment

to caring for local and global communities. Early

on, members pledged service to the university,

promising “no fraternal interests or campus politics”

would interfere with meeting their responsibilities as

members. Later, members “promised to do all in

my power – both now and in my subsequent career

– to carry out the ideals...” All versions have the essential pledge to

scholarship, loyalty, and service over a lifetime with

an emphasis on serving others. The pledge binds

us all in heeding the call of St. Ignatius. As Pope

Francis explained in 2013:"In following what St. Ignatius teaches us, the

main element ... is to learn to be magnanimous.

What does being magnanimous mean? It means

having a great heart, having greatness of mind; it

means having great ideals, the wish to do great

things to respond to what God asks of us.”

The foundation of the ASN pledge is found

in the mission of the Society of Jesus,

“a mission rooted in the belief that a new world of justice, love and peace needs educated persons of competence, conscience and compassion…dedicated to the reform of society and its structures.” Today, the Jesuits look to

all of us to be collaborators, not only because of

their declining numbers but because of a renewed

theological vision of mutuality and partnership with

the people of God. There is no better way to celebrate the Alpha

Sigma Nu Centennial than to renew your pledge.

The pledge is a challenge to ask these questions:

How will I bear the name Jesuit? How will I

collaborate? As Pope Francis might ask, how

will I be magnanimous? If you would like a laminated pledge card sent to

you, send an email to Amy Venables O’Neil at

[email protected] with your name and

preferred mailing address.

To celebrate the Alpha Sigma Nu tenets in this

Centennial year, ASN honors 100 members with the

Alpha Sigma Nu Magis Medal. Magis, a key concept

in Ignatian spirituality, does not simply mean “more,”

rather magis invites us to serve the world better, with

fire, passion, and zeal to better glorify and serve God.

The Magis Medal is awarded to those who exemplify

scholarship, loyalty, and service in their work in the

service of faith and the promotion of justice.

Nominations from ASN member universities and ASN

staff research illuminated the outstanding contributions

of members across the globe. “Our members inspire!”

says Executive Director Kate Gaertner. “From all

generations and from all schools, from Honduras to

Southeast Asia, across Africa and South America and

here in the United States, our members have seen the

needs of the marginalized and worked to address them.

On behalf of all members, we salute and thank these

100 models of magis.” Look for more information about the 100 Magis

Medal awardees on the ASN Centennial website at

www.alphasigmanu.org/centennial, on the

ASN Facebook page, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
