Alphabet - Learning Our ABC’s“Rappin’ The ABC’s”

Lesson Objective: Children will practice learning and memorizing the alphabet through movement.

Interactive Dialogue• Using the set of large uppercase alphabet pages, do a “walk” through

of the alphabet. While placing the letters on the floor or on a board, have children identify each letter as you hold it up. Once all the letters are introduced, do an echo reading of the alphabet with the children.

• Engage the children in identifying the first letter of their name and have them make a necklace using the Bridging Activity file.

• Using the Visual Aids, have the children describe to you the characteristics of the capital letters A, B, C & D. Help them see straight lines, curves, double curves, etc. Repeat for as many letters as possible.

• One at a time, ask a child to come up and choose their favorite letter. Help them find something in the room that begins with that letter.

• When every child has had a turn or two, echo read the entire alphabet again.

• Sing the traditional ABC song. Now explain that you are going to learn this song in a new and exciting “rappin’ way.”

• Listen to the song Rappin’ The ABC’s and have the children observe as you do the movements.• Invite the children to learn the song and movements. Walk the children through the movements in

short segments. Have them repeat the movements as you say the words to the song. • Play the song and have the children sing and do movements. Repeat.

1. Read alphabet books to the children.2. Before you read a book, point out some of the letters in the title.3. Play “I Can Find.” (Say: I see something that begins with the letter “A.” Hold up the letter “A” alphabet card

and ask, “Can you find what I see?”.)4. Have the children echo the letters in the alphabet (You say, “abc” and the children echo “abc”). For a

variation, try echoing the spelling of a child’s name.

Instructions: Project file on a screen OR print each letter on 8½”x11” card stock and laminate if desired. Attach a magnet strip or Velcro on each letter for use on a magnetic or felt board.

For full page versions, insert ABC’s & Much More Companion Data CD and open the Rockin’ Drums/Learning Our ABC’s folder.

Instructions: Print out the first letter of each child’s name on card stock. Have the child color their letter (encourage creativity) and cut it out. Punch a hole where indicated and insert ribbon or yarn for necklace strings.
