Checkers and Rally’s is one of the largest double drive-thru restaurants in the United States. The company operates close to 900
restaurants in 28 states and the District of Columbia. They specialize in hamburgers, hot dogs, french fries and milkshakes.
Checkers was founded in Mobile, AL in 1986. Rally’s was founded in Louisville, KY in 1985. The two companies merged in 1999 and
our now headquartered out of Tampa, FL. After the merger, Rally’s began redesigning its restaurants to follow the Checkers look.
The only noticeable difference today is the name; however, Checkers mostly operates in the Southeast and Northeast. Rally ’s
operates mostly in the Midwest and California.
History: Rally’s was bought by CKE restaurants in 1996 and then sold to Checkers in 1999. In June 2006 the company went
private through a merger with Taxi Holdings Corp., an affiliate of Wellspring Capital Management, a private equity firm. In 2014,
Wellspring sold Checkers to Sentinel Capital Partners, another private equity firm. Then, in March 2017, Checkers was sold to Oak
Hill Capital Partners for $525 million. In February of 2020, Frances Allen, former CEO of Boston Market, was named the new CEO
of Checkers / Rally’s. He hopes to continue to grow the concept to over 1,200 locations.
