I’m so pleased you could join us at The Half Moon Club where we hope you will find sessions to jazz up your library and make you a dynamic part of the community it serves.

Paraprofessionals leaving with a renewed feeling of optimism and high-spiritedness has been the goal of the conference committee. We are so excited that you could join us for we have planned organized “crime raids” geared towards motivating you, all while you network and enjoy historic Hot Springs. I strongly encourage each and every one of you to see not just what ALPS can do for you and your library, but what you can contribute to ALPS!!!

This will be my ninth conference, but only the second one that I have actually been involved in conference planning and a part of the Executive Board. The past couple of years have been a learning experience. Along the way I’ve been able to network with paraprofessionals all over the state and learned things beneficial to my library and career. My only regret thus far is wait-ing so long to get involved!!!

GAIL JOHNSON

Gail Johnson founded Face to Face Communications and Training in 1997 to fill the need for custom-ized training in the increasingly competitive workforce. Ms. Johnson's strong communication back-ground gives her a 21st century perspective on training needs:

"Strengthening communication skills between workers and managers, workers and peers, and especial-ly workers and customers is the key to success in this era where miscommunication abounds—electronically as well as face to face. Businesses and organizations can set themselves apart and con-tinue to prosper in these difficult economic times, if theytrain staff in people skills—the ‘soft’ skills.”

Ms. Johnson has designed and delivered thousands of communication-related workshops throughout the United States. She also taught college-level speech communication courses prior to founding her company. Ms. Johnson earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism and Master of Arts in Communication Studies from Northern Illinois University. She is a member of the Association for Training and Development. The Illinois Chamber of Commerce has named Face to Face Communications and Training a designated Training Provider for its ITP grant program.

Ms. Johnson's individualized approach to training has earned her a loyal client base that has grown primarily through referrals. Her client roster spans a broad range of industries, including telecommunications, banking, travel, architecture, legal, health-care, as well as local governments, education, libraries, and park districts. Thus proving to her mother and various elementary school teachers that, YES! you can make a living by talking incessantly!

PAM PARR

Pam Parr joined Face to Face Communications and Training in 2005. Having attended the Universi-ty of Iowa as a Theater Major with a Pre- Law minor, she owned her first business at the age of 23. She was a founder and partner in Fox Valley Trophy and Awards for 20 years, an icon in the recognition industry. Pam brings 30 (plus) years of business management and customer service experience to Face to Face. Her career spans corporate, government and entrepreneurial entities. “Her insights as a team leader and business manager, as well as business owner are invaluable to our clients” Johnson says, “Parr brings real world perspectives and a refreshing sense of humor to the programs we present together.”

BIOGRAPHIES Jerri Arnold has a BSE-English from University of Arkansas, but since March 2005, she has enjoyed giving away free Premier Designs jewelry while teaching women how to look and feel their best and how to expand their wardrobe through proper accessorizing. Her passion is helping other women have successful home-based businesses. She has been married for 20 years and has a fabulous 16-year-old daughter. Carolyn Ashcraft has had a distinguished career in librarianship. She was County Librarian in Grant County and Library Director in Saline County. At the Arkansas State Library, Ashcraft worked as a Library Program Advisor and as Coordinator of Extension Services from 1993 to 2004. In addition, she served as Deputy Director for Library Services and Development in 2004 and 2005. She assumed the position of State Librarian and Director of the Arkansas State Library on November 1, 2005, upon the retirement of Jack Mulkey. On the state level, Ashcraft serves on numerous committees in her role as an advocate for libraries. She is active in the Arkansas Library Association, having served as President in 2000. She is a member of the American Library Association. A native of Sheridan (AR), Ashcraft earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Arkansas at Monticello (1979) and a master’s degree in library science at the University of Alabama (1991). She currently resides in Sheridan with her partner, Patrick Mouton. “I’ve been working in Arkansas libraries since I was in the sixth grade. This is where my heart is.” Erin Baber is a clerk and bookkeeper at the Garland County Library, where she has been employed for five years. This year will be her second year as an ALPS member and she is looking forward to many active years in ALPS. Erin spends most of her free time gardening with her husband and playing with her dogs. Dr. Jud Copeland is Associate Professor in the Department of Leadership Studies in the College of Education at the University of Central Arkansas. He has been teaching in the Graduate Library Media Program at UCA since August 2007. His research focuses on intellectual property and copyright, emerging models of library administration, and international and global aspects of cataloging and classification of traditional and multimedia resources. Nina Darley works at the Jonesboro Public Library. She worked in school classrooms for 10+ years, 3 years in a Children’s Library. She is into her second year as the YA Librarian – with a low body count.

Nikolai DiPippa is the Director of Public Programs at the University of Arkansas Clinton School of Public Service. Under his leadership, over 130,000 people have attended over 750 programs with leading academics, newsmakers, and world leaders. They have included six Nobel Prize winners, 17 Pulitzer [winners], 37 ambassadors, and nine former presidents. DiPippa is also the host and executive producer of the NPR radio show, “Clinton School Presents,” which is a dialogue with the distinguished guests that visit the Clinton School. He helped develop and maintains the Clinton School’s speaker series website, www.clintonschoolspeakers.com. Since launching in 2009, over 125,000 people from 183 countries have accessed the archived events online. Martha Dixon is a motivational speaker who was recognized as one of “Top 100 Women of Arkansas” by Arkansas Magazine. She is the author of Triumph Beyond Measure: an Autobiography. Stephen Gahagans is currently the Chief of Police for the University of Arkansas Police Department. He has been in law enforcement for 28 years. Many of those years involved speaking on the subject of recognizing warning signs and what to do when confronted with risky encounters and situations. Debbie Hall has a BSE from SAU and an MLS from University of Alabama. She has worked at the Arkansas State Library since 1986, the first fifteen years as a reference librarian and since 2001 as Manager of Grants. She was ArLA President in 2008. Mindy Hodges has a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics and English from Baylor University. She has a Juris Doctorate from UALR Bowen School of Law and is a member of the Arkansas Bar. She worked as an economist at the International Trade Commission in Washington, D.C., a budget analyst at the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration, and is currently the Chief Fiscal Officer at the Arkansas State Library. From Wabbaseka in Jefferson County, Arkansas, Jason Irby was drawn to Little Rock in the early 1980s to attend the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He enrolled in UALR’s Radio, TV and Film program because of his interest in broadcast production. He completed his under-graduate degree in 1986 and his master’s in 2003. Irby is the author of Love within Life, his first published book of poems and short stories, released March 2012. He created an annual award in 2003 to benefit grad students in the School of Mass Communications at UALR and contributes proceeds from his book to the award. He contributes to other community causes around Little Rock. He enjoys writing, traveling, and audio/video productions.

LaTonya Jones is the Circulation Supervisor for the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library. She has worked in public libraries for sixteen years. LaTonya has been an ArLA member for eight years. She served as a Regional Representative for seven years, as ALPS Chair for 2012, and is currently serving as Past-Chair. LaTonya loves taking Sunday drives after church with her husband. She enjoys traveling and spending time with her husband and two daughters. Her hobbies include shopping, cooking, reading, and working in the yard. Trish Miller has been working in the library field for twenty three years. She worked for the White County Public Library System in Searcy, AR, for ten years before moving to Little Rock and in 1999 became the first Resource Center Specialist for Remington College. Her professional memberships include the American Library Association, Library Support Staff Interests Roundtable, National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Arkansas Library Association, Arkansas Library Paraprofessionals, and honorary member of the National Technical Honor Society. As a member of these organizations Trish has held positions as Chair Elect, Chair, Past Chair and Conference Committee Co-Chair. Other positions include serving as a member of the Conference, Scholarship, Public Relations, Awards, and Centennial Committees of the Arkansas Library Association and Regional Representative for Region VI of the Central Arkansas ALPS Division. In 2008 Trish was awarded the “Lorrie Shuff Paraprofessional of the Year Award.” During the Arkansas Library Association Fall Conference held in September of 2011 she was nominated and elected President Elect of the Association. Trish is currently serving as the 2013 President of the Association. Sloan Powell has been the library media specialist at Simon Middle School in Conway, Arkansas, since it opened in 2006. She has a varied job history including museum registrar, systems librarian, and bookkeeper. She is a native of Little Rock and still remembers the awe of going to the big public library downtown and not believing that she could take home any book she wanted. She loves to read, walk, cook, knit, and nap. Kara Propes is the Youth Services Librarian and has been with the Faulkner County Library in Conway since 2005. She has served and been a part of ALPS since 2006, including serving as ALPS Chair in 2010. In 2012 she became chair of the Youth Services Round Table for ArLA, where she still serves. She was raised in a small town but has always felt Conway is her home. Kara is a teen advocate and believes whole-heartedly if we do not create an inviting atmosphere for our youth, our libraries will not exist in a few years. April Sheppard is the Assistant Director for Public Services at the Dean B. Ellis Library at Arkansas State University. Her duties include being the head of reference, library

instruction, and research consultations. She began her career as the Night Circulation Supervisor and has seen a lot of different (and sometimes strange) patrons. Since then, the university has seen a huge growth in international enrollment, requiring library personnel to learn how to meet the needs of culturally diverse patrons. Before working in the library, April worked in the medical field where she became certified in CPI (Crisis, Prevention and Intervention) – a skill that has proved useful in the library on more than one occasion. Heather Smith, MEd, a former elementary teacher, joined the UAMS Library in 2002 and is the Head of the Learning Resource Center, Teaching Resource Center, and Library Systems. She currently has a staff of 6, comprising non-classified and classified staff. She also serves on the Library’s Management Team and is part of the decision-making process for current and future operations of the Library. Heather is the mother of two beautiful children, Makaela, 5, and Aiden, 1, who make going to work incredibly difficult. Lynnette Ward has been working as Branch Library Director for the Lonoke/Prairie County Regional Library System since 2004 at the Carlisle Public Library. She holds weekly Toddler Time, once-a-month Story Hour, bimonthly BINGO4BOOKS, and Movie Nights, Summer Reading, and Holiday activities. Carlisle is a town of 2,300. The library is 2,100 square feet. Nate Williams is the Global Education Manager at the Heifer Ranch in Perryville, AR. His department delivers educational programs to over 14,000 visitors a year that focus on the global issues of hunger and poverty as well as cultural differences and similarities world-wide. Prior to working for Heifer International he worked for the Boy Scouts of America and served as a teacher in a rural school in Kenya. Gregory Woods is a Nashville, Tennessee native and has been employed in the Circulation Department at the University of Memphis Library for over 18 years. Because he works in the evening, he often has time to do book repairs. When the budget got tight and they could no longer send books to the Bindery for repair, he devised his own quick repair methods. He uses everyday items to get professional results. He has presented his book repair techniques at conferences and often has been called upon for on-site visits. He is known around the library as the MacGyver of Book Repair.
