Overview of Circulatory SystemOverview of Circulatory System

The main features of animal circulatory system is blood, vessel

and heart

Heart

• have four chambers which keeps oxygenated and deoxygenated separate. This makes oxygen exchange more efficient.

• Blood circulation ~Superior and interior venacave right atrium right ventricle pulmonary arteries lungs pulmonary veins left atrium left ventricle aorta

Scientific explanationScientific explanation

Arteries do carry oxygenated blood EXCEPT for PULMONARY ARTERY which carry deoxgenated blood from heart to lungs to undergoes gaseous exchange

process

Veins do carry deoxygenated blood EXCEPT for PULMONARY VEIN which carry oxygenated blood from

lungs to heart (left atrium)

process

lungs to heart (left atrium)

It is better to remember that arteries carry blood awayfrom the heart and veins carry blood to the heart

Techniques To Elicit Student Ideas• AC : Arteries carry oxygenated blood and veins carry

deoxygenated blood.

• Technique : Drawing with description Ask the student to draw the diagram of

heart and labelled each of the component of the heart.

Once labelled, describe each of the component of heart.

Stress on the different types of artery and veins.

Scientific explaination

In fact, blood vessels create multiple loops to serve different parts of the body.

That is, one drop of blood does not circulate completely around the body before returning to the heart.

An artery will take it to one part of the body, a veinwill bring it back.

• Arteries carry oxygenated blood and veins carry deoxygenated blood.

• Blood travels in one continuous loop around the bodies

• Blood circulation only involves the organ of heart

• Site of gas exchange occur in the heart; not the lung
