    Creating Fear: News and the Construction of Crisis (2002) received the Charles HortonCooley Award in 2004 from the Society for the Study of Symbolic Interaction. This awardrecognizes the best book in the tradition of symbolic interaction. This is the second time DavidAltheide has won this award.

    Creating Reality: How TV News Distorts Events (1976) was the 1986 Winnerof the Premio Diego Fabbri Award, presented by the agency for cultural affairs(Ente dello Spettacolo). This was the first book by a non- Italian to win this award.Travel and accommodations were provided to accept the award in Rome, as well asdeliver a lecture to faculty, journalists and students at the University of Rome.Creating Reality has been translated into Italian. Creating Reality was also selected byChoice as one of the outstanding academic books of 1977.

    Media Power (1985) received the Charles Horton Cooley Award for 1986 from theSociety for the Study of Symbolic Interactionism. This work was also nominated for theDistinguished Scholar Award for the Pacific Sociological Association, and the C. W. MillsAward for the Society for the Study of Social Problems.

    Community Service

    Since 1995, I have consulted with the Phoenix Union High School District on variousaspects of school reform and student achievement.

    Since 1991, I have been extensively involved in Community Partnership in the PhoenixMetropolitan area (The Phoenix Project), especially the East Valley (Mesa Project, DahnowahCoalition). This work has required numerous evaluation plans and research designs, datacollection and analysis, as well as interim, annual and final reports.

    Since 1980, approximately 60 lectures sponsored by the Arizona Humanities Council, theA. S. U. Speakers' Bureau and others have been given to civic groups. Training sessions oncommunications and community relations have been given to the Phoenix Fire Department. Inaddition, approximately 125 interviews with the various news media, including numerous talkshows and several documentaries, have been conducted. Also included are appearances on radioand TV talk shows, a Public Broadcast System (Channel 8) TV special on the "Missing ChildrenProblem," and an entire 30 minute public affairs program on Media Coverage of 1985's stories.
