Q.Is the integrated 7-segment keypad available on all sizes?
A. Drives delivered with the graphic keypad are not equipped with theintegrated 7-segment keypad. The offer with the 7-segment keypad is meantfor cost savings at OEMs who do not require the high-end keypad. Above15kW/20HP the additional cost of the LCD graphic keypad becomesnegligible.
Q.Can the Altivar 71 be used on synchronous motors?
A. Yes, the Altivar 71 has a motor control algorithm that allows it to drivesynchronous motors in open loop: the targeted market sector is principallythe textile industry where speed precision is important.
Application with brushless motors in closed loop and positioning are coveredby the Lexium offer.
Q.Can the Altivar 71 be connected to a 500V distribution network?
A. No, the power supply voltage is limited to 480V because factories with 500 Vnetworks are rare. A power supply for 500Vac requires using more costlyelectronics such as filters capacitors, and switch mode power supply.
Q.What is the name of the Toshiba product?
A. The drive commercialized under the Toshiba label is called the VF-AS1
Q.What are the common points and the differences between the Altivar 71and the VF-AS1?

42
Questions & AnswersQ.Can the Altivar 71 be used on variable torque applications?
A. Yes, the motor control algorithm can be used on variable torqueapplications. It is a simple V/Hz law without slip compensation. This is in the product to accommodate applications that usemultiple motors on the output of one AC drive. The Altivar 71 is optimized for constant torque applications and therefore does not incorporate functions specific to pumps and fans, such as automatic V/Hz adjustment ( otherwise know asNOLD:energy saving law.) The power stage of the Altivar 71 will also be used as the platform to develop a new offer forvariable torque applications.
Q.Why isn’t the Altivar 71 available in book format?
A. The “book” format approach comes from the “motion control”range of multipurpose drives (brushless), of limited power in aconstrained space. Some competitors like LENZE or KEB offersome drives in book format but this is not representative of whatis generally available in the target markets for the ATV71.
The ATV71 must substitute for the ATV58 and the ATV58F rangeas well as be in “compact” format. It should also be noted thatmost of the direct competitors like ABB, Mitsubishi, Hitachi,Siemens, Fuji and Allen Bradley offer a similar compact formatproduct like the ATV71
Q.Does the Altivar 71 exist in a single-phase version?
A. 230V single-phase drives are used on simple machines, which isnot the targeted applications of the Altivar 71. This is segment isthe target of the ATV31. For those application requiring singlephase input and a high-end communication network, the Altivar71 230V three-phase product can be powered by single phaseby derating by 66% and using a line reactor.
Q.Can the fan on the ATV71 be shut off?
A. Yes, the fan is powered automatically as a function of thethermal state of the drive. The advantages are the reduction ofmotor noise when stopped and the increase in fan life forapplications requiring discontinuous operation. Also, the fanmounts as a cassette assembly. As a preventive maintenanceplan, in dusty or hostile environments, the fan can be replacedquickly. The fan cassette will be offered as a spare part.
45
Q.What use is the Run permissive (power removal) function?
A. The Power Removal function forbids the unintended start of the motor. This function cuts the power to the motor, whichtherefore can no longer produce torque. Power Removal isoperational security and not electrical security (no galvanicisolation). Whenever the Power Removal function is active, the user can work on the machine with confidence.
This function conforms to the machine norm EN954-1 category3 and to the installation norm IEC/EN61508-1 SIL2. Plus thesafety function of the Altivar 71 conforms to the futureinternational norm relative to machine safety (IEC62061), whichis not the case with two competitors (Danfoss FC300 andControl Techniques Unidrive SP) who possess a similar function.
Q.Can the Altivar 71 be connected to an AS-i bus?
A. The AS-i bus is meant to be connected to simple controllers so a better adapted and more economical solution is the use ofthe ATV11 or the ATV31 tied to remote inputs/outputs which areconnected to the AS-I bus.
Q.What are the advantages of the ATV71 on communicationnetworks compared to the ATV58?
A. Ease of use and diagnostics The ATV71 integrates numerous diagnostic functions such ascommunication operation monitors and error counters. Plus, it is possible to see, on the LCD graphic keypad the commandwords and references sent by all the communication channels, and to see which channel is commanding the drive.
PerformanceThe Communication Scanner brings a great deal of flexibility tothe exchanges. It also permits, for Modbus, and eightfoldincrease in exchange rate compared to the Altivar 58.
The I/O Mode also increases the flexibility and offers a very largeinventory of solutions.
Q.Does the Controller Inside card replace a PLC?
A. No, the board is designed to integrate some of the functionsdedicated to the machine in the drive, not from the installation. The most noticeable performance increase with this option isimproved response time.
44
Q.Why are there two (2) RJ45 connectors on the product?
A. The RJ45 located on the front face is meant for the connectionof the LCD graphic keypad, or PowerSuite or a Magelis panel.
The RJ45 situated on the terminal board is meant for theconnection to a communication network and still have aconnection for the LCD graphic keypad, or PowerSuite or a Magelis panel.
Q.Why are there two (2) communication protocols offered on the same RJ45 connector?
A. The ATV71 offers a low cost solution to the customer. On thesame RJ45 connector two protocols, MODBUS RTU andCANopen are possible. Also, The CANopen RJ45 with the Sub-D adapter conforms to the Schneider Electric standard.
Q.What is the difference between the reinforced version fordusty environments and the standard version?
A. The principal differences are:
– The conformal coating of all the boards in critical areas
– The tinning of the copper bars
– The treatment of the plastics against the corrosive nature of certain oils
Q.Why does the Altivar 71 follow the requirements for eco-design?
A. Schneider Electric is committed to respect the environment and more of our customers share this growing concern.Schneider Electric has within the core of its long-termdevelopment policies, decided to engage in eco-design torespond to these concerns and to respect new world wide and European directives.
88% of the Altivar 71 components value is recyclable, either interms of energy recuperation (incineration with energy recovery)or material (recycling composting). The ATV71 conforms to theWEEE European Directive (Waste Electrical & ElectronicEquipment).
Also, the Altivar 71 components have been chosen for theirreduced environmental impact conforming to the EuropeanDirective ROHS (Restriction Of Hazardous Substances), which prohibits the use of restricted materials.
47
Q.Is the DC bus accessible?
A. Yes the Altivar 71 can be connected to a common DC bus.Schematics and protection recommendation are in the catalog.
Q. What enables the ATV71 to offer high performance motorcontrol and fast response time on the inputs and outputs of the drive?
A. The keys to the high performance are the dual microprocessorarchitecture of the ATV71 and our software expertise. The ATV71has one micro is dedicated to motor control with softwarewritten by our own team of Schneider Electric engineers whospecialize in motor control firmware. The other micro isdedicated to the managing the external interface to the drive. This includes the control terminal strip, keypad, I/O card, encoder card and communication ports. Most competitors useonly on micro processor to perform the motor control andinterface function.
Q. What is the IP rating of the power section when it is mountedout the back of an enclosure?
A. The ATV71 was designed so that all the power components and DC bus capacitors are integrated with the heat sink suchthat these components can be sealed off from the othercomponents of the drive, namely the power board and controlboard. With this seal, the power section can maintain an IP54rating. Picture frame kits are available to facilitate mounting thepower section out the back of an enclosure so the enclosuresize can be reduced.
Q. The control terminal strips are attached to a printed circuitboard. Can they be removed?
A. The control terminal strip is removable. One screw needs to beloosened, and then the control terminal board can be removed.
46
Q. What are the advantages of the ATV71 Controller Inside cardcompared to that of the ATV58?
A. The Altivar 71 Controller Inside card benefits from all thefunctions offered by the LCD graphic keypad especially the I/Omapping. It can also display the user parameters clearly, application faults, alarms…
Unlike the Altivar 58, the Altivar 71 can be equipped with a Controller Inside card and also a communication card.Completely transparent exchanges of data between the two cards are possible.
Q.What are the EMC levels established for the Altivar 71?
A. The Altivar 71 conforms to the product norm IEC/EN 61800-3which is the applicable reference. The use of CE componentsmarked as complying with the EMC norm allows the finalmachine to be marked as compliant to the EMC directive. (CE + CE = CE). In the case where a machine norm requiresconformity to a superior category (example: conformance togeneric norms), which is rarely the case, the use of additionalcatalogued EMC filters can be necessary.
Q.Can the Altivar 71 operate on an isolated neutral distributionnetwork (IT)?
A. Two norms define the use of filters on a type IT distributionnetwork:
• EN950, specifies the use of capacitors between phase/neutraland ground,
• EN50178, specifies the discharge energy level and the safety level.
The ATV71 filters include type Y capacitors of low valueconnected to ground which can be used on IT distributionnetworks where the voltage is limited to 460V + 10% (with or without a first isolation fault to ground).
Thus the recommendations are as follows:EUROPE and INTERNATIONAL:
• 380 V to 415 V distribution networks: circuit opening if desired
NORTH AMERICA:
• 460 V distribution network: circuit opening if desired
• 480 V distribution network: circuit opening recommended
The connection or the opening of the Y capacitors can be easilydone by the customer by the simple movement of a switch.
