ALUMINIUM INGOTS MOZAL

Information updated as of September 2008

The typical specifications set out above are indicative only. Seller does not warrant compliance with the typical specifications and reserves the right to amend them at any time.

This section describes the entire group/s by which the Mozal product is described and specified.

1.1 GRADES OF PRODUCTMozal produces primary aluminium, with a purity grade of, or greater than 99.7% aluminium. This product is traded as commodity aluminum on the world market. Mozal product is graded in accordance with the Aluminium Association grading system.

Mozal will determine the actual grades offered by Mozal from time to time. These grades will depend upon the present metal quality and market factors. They are likely to include P0406A, P0610A and P1020A. Mozal may offer other grades from time to time.

1.2 INGOTSThe ingot is the basic component part of the product sold by Mozal and its size and form conforms to the special contract LME rules and specifications regarding quality shape and weight.

1.2.1 INGOT FORM (SIZE AND wEIGhT)The ingot size and shape is as shown below in Figure 1

The ingot has a nominal weight of 23.7kg and oversize and undersize ingots are rejected through the process prior to packing into bundles.

1 PRODUCT DEFINITION

This section describes the entire group/s by which the mozal product is described and specified

1.1 Grades of Product

Mozal produces primary aluminium, with a purity grade of, or greater than 99.7% aluminium.

1.2 Ingots

The ingot is the basic component part of the product sold by Mozal and its size and form conforms to the special contract LME rules and specifications regarding quality shape and weight.

1.2.1 Ingot Form (size and weight)

The ingot size and shape is as shown below in Figure 1

The ingot has a nominal weight of 23.7kg and oversize and undersize ingots are rejected through the process prior to packing into bundles.

1.2.2 Ingot Contamination

The moulds are coated with a canola oil spray prior to casting, and the ingots may show some residue of this oil, or its combustion products. They may also acquire some residue of any oil leakage in the system that found its way to the moulds. This residue will be confined to small areas and will not affect the performance of the product during the remelting process or any subsequent processing.

Even though all efforts will be made to maintain all surfaces in prime conditions Mozal cannot guarantee that 100% of product will meet this specification. Please see section 5.1 below regarding health and safety of product.

Information updated as of September 2008

The typical specifications set out above are indicative only. Seller does not warrant compliance with the typical specifications and reserves the right to amend them at any time.

1.2.2 INGOT CONTAMINATIONThe moulds are coated with a canola oil spray prior to casting, and the ingots may show some residue of this oil, or its combustion products.

1.2.3 INGOT SURFACE CONDITIONThe top surface (see figure 2) of the ingots is free from visible cracks, bubbles or holes. This is achieved through the action of skimming or controlled cooling to provide a safe and clean product. All efforts will be made to eliminate surface and subsurface cavities, however it is impossible for Mozal to guarantee that 100% of product meets this specification. Please see section 5.1 below regarding health and safety of product. The other faces of the ingot will show minor surface roughness, from contact with the mould. The Ingots are not individually marked with a unique number.

1.3 BUNDLESThe bundle comprises 44 ingots packed in an interlocked manner and secured with three polyester straps. The bottom of the ingot has slight projections on two opposite sides to allow easy handling of the product by forklift (See figure 3).

The bundles are packed by robot, and shall show tight packing and interlocking of all ingots. Oversize and undersize ingots are rejected prior to packing to ensure a quality bundle build.

1.3.1 BUNDLE FORM (wEIGhT AND DIMENSION)The bundles are weighed individually. Bundles outside the range of 970kg to 1070kg are rejected through the system.

The scales are test weighed every 24 hours. Record of readings are taken and stored. Out of calibration conditions are reported and corrected. All products that have been weighed by an out of calibration scale since the last test weighing was passed are manually re-weighed before dispatch or at the stock yard.

1.2.3 Ingot Surface Condition

The top surface (see figure 2) of the ingots is free from visible cracks, bubbles or holes.

1.3 Bundles

The bundle comprises 44 ingots packed in an interlocked manner and secured with three polyester straps.

The scales are test weighed every 24 hours. Record of readings are taken and stored. Out of calibration conditions are reported and corrected. All products that have been weighed by an out of calibration scale since the last test weighing was passed are manually re-weighed before dispatch or at the stock yard.

1.3.2 Strapping

Three polyester straps (Tenax 19mm or equivalent) secure the bundle. The straps are applied parallel to each other, with the center one going through the middle of the bundle, and the bottom ingot layer longitudinal face.

The polyester strapping is preferred over the more traditional steel for its improved shock resistance, corrosion resistance, elasticity and ease of handling. It is however more vulnerable to direct impact and abrasion. Reasonable care must be taken when handling this product.

Note: The polyester strapping is never to be used for lifting or dragging of the product. It will fail if used in this manner.

1.3.3 Labelling

Every Mozal bundle is labeled on 3 sides (faces). The label contains a bar code that has embedded information on the cast and bundle number. The label also has the bundle weight printed on it (See figure 4).

2 HEALTH, SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENT

2.1 Health and Safety Requirements

The aluminium ingot bundle is destined to be re-melted in a subsequent handling process. Addition of solid materials to liquid aluminium is a potentially dangerous process.

Before charging any ingots to an aluminium-melting furnace, the ingots must be free from any contamination. Oils, fertilizers, or strongly oxidising materials have the potential to cause a major explosion if they come in contact with liquid aluminium during a melting process.

Before charging any ingots to a molten bath of aluminum, the ingots must be clean, as described above, and furthermore the ingots must be completely dry. Wet ingots can cause a serious explosion or splashing of molten metal.

The ingots must be dried, by preheating them at 200°C for a period of 2 hours. Testing should take place to ensure that the preheating system is capable of fully heating the ingots to a core temperature of 120°C for a period of not less than 1 hour.

During the course of transit, there is high risk that the ingots will become wet. Substandard transport or storage conditions, outside Mozal control, may result in the product becoming dirty or contaminated with foreign materials. For this reason it is essential that the user of the product treat all ingots with care and suspicion.

Additional information is contained in Appendix B – Material Safety Information

7.3 Hazardous Identification

The aluminum ingot bundle is destined to be re-melted in a subsequent handling process.

The ingots must be dried by preheating at 200°C for a period of 2 hours. Testing should take place to ensure that the preheating system is capable of fully heating the ingots to a core temperature of 120°C for a period of not less than 1 hour.

During the course of transit, there is high risk that the ingots will become wet. Substandard transport or storage conditions, outside the control of Mozal, may result in the product becoming dirty or contaminated with foreign materials. For this reason it is essential that the user of the product treats all ingots with suspicion.
