MEDAC PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT – OUR ALUMNIProf. Stephen CalleyaMEDAC Director & Lecturer in International Relations

Over the past twenty five years the Mediterranean Academy of

Diplomatic Studies has been honoured to host more than 700 graduates from more than sixty different countries from all over the Mediterranean region and beyond.

MEDAC opened its doors in 1990 as a joint undertaking between Malta and Switzerland. From that first intake of students following a Masters in Diplomacy and students following the part-time Diploma in Diplomatic Studies the Academy has evolved into a prestigious academic institution with a regional outlook focusing on issues pertaining to the Mediterranean.

The launching of the Masters of Arts in Diplomatic Studies in 1992 and the Joint M.A. in Conflict Resolution and Mediterranean Security with the School of Conflict Analysis and Resolution at George Mason University in 2010 has resulted in the further evolution of a global MEDAC Alumni network. Today, MEDAC is honoured to host numerous students participating in different MEDAC programmes coming from all over the world on an annual basis.

MEDAC’s mainstay has been that of providing theoretical and empirical academic postgraduate instruction to hundreds of students pursuing a career in diplomacy and international affairs. MEDAC’s unique services have centred upon providing intellectual insight in the fields of international relations, international history, international law, international economics and diplomacy in a Mediterranean context.

MEDAC is honoured and proud to have had the privilege to share its academic services and Mediterranean oriented practical experiences with such a large number of students over

the years. MEDAC’s evolution is very much driven by the distinguished reputation that it has achieved through its network of Alumni.

The diplomatic network of MEDAC alumni provides a precious opportunity for MEDAC’s students, academics and patrons to foster connections in all parts of the world. MEDAC alumni now serve in key diplomatic posts throughout the globe. Over the years everyone connected with MEDAC has benefited greatly from this unique diplomatic network.

The advances that have taken place in the world of technology have allowed for the development of a more dynamic MEDAC Alumni network that is also connected on Facebook. Moreover, the leadership of the MEDAC Alumni Association and its regular programme of activities including the annual MEDAC Alumni Cultural Evening and the annual MEDAC Ambassadorial Lecture have resulted in the emergence of an ever increasing interactive alumni family of friends.

Since the end of the Cold War MEDAC’s network of Alumni have been contributing to contemporary Euro-Mediterranean relations through their respective professional careers and the personal contacts they established during their studies at MEDAC.

MEDAC looks forward to continue welcoming a new generation of students who will benefit from the wisdom and guidance of their predecessors. In fact, MEDAC’s Alumni are by far the Academy’s proudest achievement!

The MEDAC Alumni Association was set up in 2006 and has

brought together over 700 graduates from almost 60 different countries worldwide. The Association was set up with the aim of maintaining a network of past, present and future students. The immense wealth of knowledge and experience that all these Alumni share is phenomenal.

All the members of this Network are given the opportunity to get together with fellow members of the MEDAC family as well as to keep abreast of issues pertaining to the Mediterranean. The Alumni Association holds two annual events for the benefit of its Alumni. The first event is the International Cultural Night which is held towards the beginning of the scholastic year and enables present and past students to get to know one another in an informal setting. It also gives the students an opportunity to showcase various traditions as well as dishes typical of their countries. Furthermore, an ambassadorial lecture is held in spring, in which an Ambassador is invited to address the participants. Alumni are also given the opportunity to engage in discussions with the distinguished guest about pertinent issues. The aim of this lecture is to promote dialogue and cooperation amongst countries in order to ensure security and stability in the Mediterranean Region. This session is then followed by a reception which allows participants to continue their discussions in an informal

manner as well as to get to know one another and to share experiences.

Even though M E D A C A l u m n i come from many different countries, they are able to remain in contact throughout the years thanks to social media. The MEDAC Alumni Association promotes its work and initiatives through its facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/19374582384/ which also has a photo gallery in order to display photos of its events. The Alumni are very active on this page and engage in discussions continuously.

In this second publication about our MEDAC Alumni Association (MAA) we provide an overview of all the students who have attended Medac’s postgraduate programmes since the Academy’s establishment. We have sought to include all available class photos. However, given that Medac was established in the pre-digital age some of the earlier class photos are not available.

In the end I would like to thank the Mediterranean Academy of Diplomatic Studies for the constant support given to all the initiatives taken by this Association. I would also like to take the opportunity to encourage all MEDAC Alumni to continue to form part of this ever growing network no matter where their career paths may take them.

MEDAC Human Rights Summer School AlumniDr. Omar GrechCo-ordinator of the Human Dimension Programme & Lecturer in International Law

The MEDAC Human Rights Summer School brings

together diplomats, civil society representatives and postgraduate students to examine and reflect upon diverse human rights issues of specific relevance to the Euro-Mediterranean region. Over two hundred alumni have participated in the annual MEDAC Human Rights Summer School since the year 2001. The summer school alumni have come from a wide variety of countries including Algeria, Armenia, Bosnia- Herzegovina, Germany, Libya, Malta, Morocco, Ireland, Tunisia, Spain and Palestine amongst others. In fact, since its inception more than 20 countries have been represented at the summer school.

These alumni all shared the objectives of the Summer School that include:

• Learning from each other’s experiences and perspectives

• Exploring the history of human rights and human rights values

• Understanding human rights instruments and frameworks and the historical, social and cultural contexts in which they have emerged

• Discussing current debates and challenges in human rights and identifying the core issues involved

• Participating in individual and group-work learning

• Developing methodologies and approaches in human rights education.

The informal and interactive approach adopted in the summer school thus allows for a strong bond of friendship to develop amongst summer school participants, lecturers and facilitators. This is witnessed in the comments made by the alumni:

Rim (Morocco): I enjoyed the creative way of learning. I had some knowledge but this has enhanced my knowledge a lot. I liked the connections and communication with everyone. The painting was something I enjoyed too much. By combining the two ways of learning we achieved more.

Amr (Egypt): The biggest portion of the vale added for me was the outside dynamics which you made a special effort to allow this to happen. The balance between academia & activity was optimum.

Lara (Bosnia-Herzegovina): I particularly enjoyed the mixed nature of the group and the diversity that they all represented. The blend of theory and practice was also especially welcome.

Alumni – German Chair in Conflict Prevention & Peace StudiesDr. Monika WohlfeldHolder of the German Chair & Lecturer in Security Studies

In 2009, MEDAC has concluded an agreement with the Federal

Republic of Germany, represented by the Foreign Office and established a German Chair in Peace Studies and Conflict Prevention. This strengthened the Academy’s teaching and research capacities, and allowed it to provide specialized training in conflict prevention and conflict resolution theory and practise to its students. The agreement also aimed at strengthening the engagement of German authorities in cooperative efforts in the Mediterranean region and underline their commitment to provide educational opportunities to youth at the regional level and beyond. Furthermore, the agreement allowed for strengthened links between the Academy and German research, educational and governmental institutions. Numerous German experts contribute to the work of the Academy every academic year. MEDAC’s MDip students, who are also junior diplomats in their country in the Mediterranean region and elsewhere, participate in a weeklong study visit to Germany, during which they visit Berlin, Bonn and Frankfurt. During their stay, the students benefit inter alia from a program of discussion and encounters at the Federal Foreign Office in Berlin, thus also becoming alumni of its International Diplomat Training. During the study visit to Germany,

MEDAC students have the opportunity to encounter MEDAC alumni working and living in Germany, and benefit from their experience.

Many of MEDAC students participate in the extensive offer of diplomatic training for international diplomats at the German Foreign Office before or after taking the degree program at MEDAC. Some have also taken up the educational opportunities provided by the German Academic Exchange service, which offers scholarship programs for foreign students wishing to pursue higher education in Germany.

The German Foreign Office and MEDAC recently renewed the Agreement which makes Germany a stakeholder in MEDAC, and underlined their commitment to its mission of regional, cooperative and academically founded diplomatic training for the Mediterranean region. For the German authorities, maintaining and strengthening links with MEDAC students and alumni takes a vital place in this effort.

MEDAC Alumni Reunions in Cooperation with Swiss EmbassiesDr. Derek LutterbeckDeputy Director, Holder of the Swiss Chair & Lecturer in International History

In recent years, the MEDAC alumni network has been strengthened

not only through events held in Malta but also by a growing number of alumni reunions that have been carried out in other countries. Many of these events have been organised by Swiss Embassies, often in collaboration with Maltese diplomatic representations, either in countries where MEDAC alumni are posted or in their countries of origin. Whenever possible, current MEDAC students have also been included in these gatherings, example, during MEDAC study visits to Switzerland or Germany. While some of these events have been small scale and informal, others have been larger and taken place within a more formal setting. In all cases, however, the basic aim has been to enhance the MEDAC alumni network by allowing former participants, who might have never met before, to meet or reunite. Moreover, these events also allow Swiss and Maltese diplomatic representations to benefit from the ever growing community of MEDAC alumni.

Examples of MEDAC alumni reunions carried out abroad have included the following: Regular (annual) reunions of both MEDAC alumni and current MEDAC students organised by the Swiss Embassy in Berlin; an event carried out by the Swiss Embassy in Cairo which was destined for MEDAC alumni from Egypt, as well as other Egyptian participants on Swiss-sponsored programs; regular (annual) gatherings of MEDAC alumni and current MEDAC students organised by either the Swiss or Maltese Mission to the UN in Geneva; or a reunion for MEDAC alumni from and posted to China, organised by the Swiss Embassy in Beijing.
