Alumni Engagement Manager | The University of WarwickRECRUITMENT PACK

“Warwick’s very birth in 1965 was only made possible by the generosity, support and friendship of individual donors, and partners in: business, the charity sector, our community, and our city and region.

Our innovative approach, and the energy and commitment of Warwick’s staff and students, quickly built on that fantastic start, propelling Warwick into the top ten of the UK’s universities and the top one hundred in the world. Our Director of Development and his team are now poised to build the support, generosity and friendship we will need to make our next leap, and you could be part of that.”

Stuart Croft, Vice-Chancellor, University of Warwick

The role of alumni and philanthropy are central to Warwick’s major ambitions for its next generation of growth. With the appointment of a new Director of Development in 2018, we have comprehensively redesigned the role of Development at Warwick and have unleashed a tremendous amount of momentum. Our faculty, alumni and donors are excited, but there is much more that we need to accomplish. We need the best people to help us to achieve our goals, and I hope that you might be one of them. Development Services and alumni engagement are central to our strategy, and, with my team, I have created a new way of working. I am proud that we have created an environment that enables fundraising and alumni engagement to thrive. Central to my strategy was the introduction of a data-driven approach to fundraising and prospect research. To underpin this, Warwick committed to a new CRM – in the middle of the uncertainties of lockdown 1.0 – to lay the foundation for insight-driven campaigns. By appointing a Prospect Research Manager, Information Systems Manager and Philanthropic Finance & Projects Manager, we have brought a wealth of sector experience to the team. In 2020 Development and Alumni Engagement merged and I was appointed to lead the Alumni and Supporter Engagement team. Our focus is on “friend-raising”, with

a mission to build lifelong relationships with alumni that inspire friendship and financial support, strengthen our reputation and advance our strategic vision. To achieve this vision, I have recently appointed three new faculty facing Senior Alumni Engagement Executives and an Alumni Engagement Officer. I am now recruiting an Alumni Engagement Manager to join my senior team. Building on these foundations, your role will be to lead a strategy that connects university leaders and faculty with our alumni community and donors. This position will create a new level of participation in volunteering opportunities, to complement a culture of philanthropy and support Warwick’s strategic priorities. If you have the energy to help advance our momentum, I would be delighted to hear from you.

DEVELOPMENT AND PHILANTHROPYat the University of Warwick

Over the years, the University of Warwick has been shaped by the generosity, support and friendship of individual donors, business partners and charitable organisations.

In the 1960s

• A group of visionary community leaders set out to raise funds for a new university with a mission to boost skills and business innovation in the heart of Britain’s highly successful manufacturing sector.

• Led by prominent businessman and Chancellor Designate, Lord Rootes, they raised £4 million from individuals and big-name companies; the largest amount generated by any of the new universities created in the 1960s.

• One of their earliest philanthropic supporters was Helen Martin, an American benefactor, who

literally transformed the University’s landscape with her gift to develop American-style campus accommodation, which she knew would be familiar and attractive to students from her native US. After this first gift in 1964, Ms Martin established a charitable trust which has continued to support scholarships and capital developments on campus to this day.

• The first 450 students arrived on campus in 1965.

In the 1990s

• Warwick launched an appeal to build and equip a state-of- the-art biomedical research facility and worked with local volunteers to successfully raise over £6 million towards it.

• With further fundraising from individuals, local businesses and trusts they were then able to appoint the first medical research professor and the first Endowed Chair in Neurobiology.

• Towards the end of the 1990s, they appointed their first

Director of Development with a full-service Development Office following a few years later

In 2015

• Warwick completed their 50th anniversary fundraising campaign which smashed its £50 million target by raising £75 million.

Now…

• Today over 27,200 students thrive across three faculties, in more than 70 research centres, institutes and schools.

• We nurture relationships with over 253,000 alumni, friends and supporters in 182 countries around the world.

• The Office of Development and Alumni Engagement more than doubled in the past 15 months, to enable our ambitious new strategy.

• Last year, the University raised over £14 million towards a variety of fundraising priorities, including research, student experience and capital plans.

• In 2020 following the onset of Covid-19, we were the first university in the UK to launch a remote telephone campaign, and we established an Institute for Global Pandemic Planning, raising over £3 million towards PhD scholarships.

• In 2021, we held our first Warwick Giving Day, calling on staff, students and alumni to join together to celebrate philanthropy and raise funds for student support and research.

• We are currently upgrading our alumni database to an enterprise level CRM, to enable insight-driven alumni engagement and fundraising campaigns

• The Development and Alumni Engagement Strategy 2021-24 was approved. It sets an ambitious target of tripling philanthropic income and significantly increasing alumni participation in support of institutional priorities.
