Letter from the Rector Hello gentlemen, My name is Jay Verzosa and I am blessed and humbled to serve as the new Rector for Alumni Hall. It is a privilege to welcome you to your new home at Notre Dame and to embark on this great adventure with you! As Rector, I serve as the chief administrator of the hall and pastoral leader of the community, and as with any community, I do not do this work alone. Here in Alumni Hall, we anchor ourselves in tradition, celebrate community with joy, and embrace each other as brothers. Our exuberant Welcome Week team will help make your transition to University life as smooth as possible, and the entire Alumni Hall community will guide you and support you, not only in your first year, but throughout all your years at Our Lady's University. Some of the finest men you will ever meet comprise our Hall Staff of Assistant Rectors and Resident Assistants. They know both our hall and the greater Notre Dame community, and in them you will discover your first mentors and friends. If you need anything, whether it's setting up your television or figuring out where your classes are, feeling homesick or choosing how to get involved, reach out to your RA. They will most definitely reach out to you! Some might say that a random act placed you in Alumni Hall; those of us who are here know that it was the grace of God. We are blessed men to be here and to count you among us, the brothers of Alumni Hall. Welcome home. Jay Verzosa Rector, Alumni Hall

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Should I bring a computer to Notre Dame? A computer is all but required here. If you make the decision to not bring a computer, you will spend a lot of time in the computer lounge in CoMo. Needless to say, most kids don’t want to do this, so they bring their own computer.

What kind of computer? Both Macintosh and Windows computers work on the network, just make sure they meet the minimum system requirements. This also really depends on your major. Engineering or Computer Science?...probably Windows for the programs. Business?...Any PC, because Excel. Or take a risk with a Mac, because they rock. You can find these requirements online at http://oit.nd.edu/resnet/systems.html. What do I need to connect to the network? You can either connect via LAN cord (RJ-45 cable) and Ethernet card, or the campus’ wireless internet network (NDsecure or NdGuest). To find more information about connecting to the network, check http://oit.nd.edu/resnet.

Can I purchase software on campus? Yes, due to Notre Dame’s agreement with Microsoft, you can buy Microsoft titles at reduced prices. Apple products are also available at reduced prices for students on the Apple website.

Can I purchase hardware on campus? Yes, you can visit the OIT Solutions Center for more information at http://solution.nd.edu

What is the most important thing I should do with my computer before I come to campus? For those with Windows machines, make sure you have all the latest critical updates installed. In addition, make sure that you have your Windows XP firewall turned on and if you have anti-virus software, make sure it is current.

What if I can’t bring a computer? Notre Dame has several computing clusters on campus open various hours of the day to suit your computing needs. To review the equipment available in the computer clusters, visit http://oit.nd.edu/clusters/hardware.html

Do I need a printer? If you have a computer in your room, it is totally a personal choice. There are printers available to purchase in OIT Solutions Center for around $100. Don’t be too hasty to lay down the cash, however. We have a dorm printer available to all Dawgs in the 1st floor study lounge, and it is “fully functional” and enormously popular. Also, ND students are allotted $10 per year towards printing using the University’s printers located in every printing cluster on campus. Two cents

Page 5: Alumni Hall Welcome Weekend Information Booklet Book of Alumni Hall 2019.pdfAlumni Hall Welcome Weekend Information Booklet Welcome to Alumni Hall, the home of the Alumni Dawgs and

per page black and white, but eight for color. This is what everyone uses essentially. There are also printers in the Library, Lafun, D-bart, etc. where your print quota works.

What about laundry? There are two options for laundry. The first option is the do it yourself option with the washers and driers found in the basement of alumni hall. The busiest day is Sunday for laundry but any other time throughout the week the machines are fairly open. The second option is the St. Michael’s option. St. Michael’s is a laundry service that picks up clothes once a week and delivers them back to the dorms a few days later.

Where can I go to Mass? In Alumni Hall we have Dawg Mass every Sunday night at 10:00 PM, a big favorite with all of the residents of Alumni. There are also Masses during the week both in Alumni and throughout campus. If you are not Catholic there are some great options to find worship centers through Campus Ministry.

What’s the deals with those meals? There are two available meal plans.

1. 21 Meals a week, where you get three meals a day at either dining hall.

2. Flex 14, where you get 2 meals a day at either dining hall and $500 in Flex Points per semester, which you can spend at any of the campus restaurants (Smashburger (Thank God it isn’t Burger King anymore), Pizza Hut/Taco Bell, Subway, Starbucks, the Huddle, etc). along with everyone’s favorite DuStu restaurants, including Star Ginger Asian Fusion and Modern Market.

Dorm Room Dimensions/Usual Set up The rooms are about 9x14. Some of you will have a quad, where you get three of these rooms, the middle being a common room, and the side rooms having your beds and desks.

● Quad normal set-up is both side rooms having lofted beds, with the desks and wardrobes underneath the beds, and then a futon, tv, fridge, and whatever else in the common room - Double normal setup is two beds lofted, and a tv, stand, and fridge. Its best to figure out how to set all this up when you get to Alumni because each room varies based on personal preferences. - You can find more information about what to bring and what not to bring on Notre Dame’s official move in guide: https://housing.nd.edu/assets/59340/checklist.pdf

ALUMNI HALL TRADITIONS Dawg Mass Dawg Mass is the weekly Mass held in Alumni’s chapel every Sunday night at 10 pm. It is a great way to build dorm spirit and start off the week. The main thing that differentiates Dawg Mass from other masses is the community spirit and great mass band that we have in Alumni. Also, it doesn’t hurt that the bishop dubbed our chapel the prettiest on campus.

Daily Mass Mass is held in Alumni’s chapel at 10 pm Sunday-Thursday. The Sunday mass is referred to as Dawg Mass, and other masses are referred to as Daily Mass. Mass is also held on Saturdays after home football games. For day games mass begins half an hour after the game ends, and for night games mass is at 5:30 pm.

Emmaus Emmaus is a weekly Bible group in the Alumni Hall basement. It normally meets Wednesday nights.

Dive Night Dive night is a weekly event founded by the former Alumni president, Matt Krach. It is Wednesday nights at 9, or normally right after Emmaus. A big group of Dawgs and sometimes Lady Dawgs go to the high dive in the Rock and jump off and have fun.

Dillon Rivalry Alumni Hall and Dillon Hall have a rivalry that has existed since the two dorms were built. This rivalry is shown in a great way during rivalry week, in which there are competitive events between Alumni and Dillon, and where we continuously prove to be the better dorm every year.

Many, Many More Our storied dorm is home to many wacky traditions. Some old, some new, and some quite weird, these funny practices help define our loving community and build our strong sense of brotherhood. Simply writing about these traditions does not do them justice, and you Pups will surely learn about them in due time.

Sister Dorm

Badin Hall

In 1972, Notre Dame admitted women to its student population, and Badin Hall became one of the first women’s residences. This hall is the campus’s smallest women’s dorm, but it is the only one with a balcony—and just underwent a brand new renovation. It is conveniently located on South Quad, sandwiched between the women of Howard Hall and the Coleman Morse Center. The women of Badin have a strong commitment to service and spiritual development in addition to interhall athletics, which include flag football, lacrosse, water polo, and ping-pong. It’s most famous annual events include the Badin Polar Plunge, a Fall Art Show and the Spring Badin Breakdown.

Events with Badin

Game watches: watch Notre Dame sporting events with good food and better company.

Alumni Hall Serenades (sung at strange times ranging from Welcome Weekend events to interhall championship wins… you’ll learn to love them):

You’re Still the One: Shania Twain Looks like we made it Look how far we've come my baby We mighta took the long way We knew we'd get there someday They said, "I bet they'll never make it" But just look at us holding on We're still together still going strong You're still the one I run to The one that I belong to You're still the one I want for life (You're still the one) You're still the one that I love The only one I dream of You're still the one I kiss good night Looks like we made it Look how far we've come my baby. My Heart Will Go On: Celine Dion Every night in my dreams I see you, I feel you That is how I know you go on Far across the distance And spaces between us You have come to show you go on Near, far, wherever you are. I believe that the heart does go on Once more you open the door And you're here in my heart And my heart will go on and on

Recommended Restaurants

● For a quick bite to eat, anything on Eddy Street is good. There is Five Guys, Chipotle, Barbici (an Italian Chipotle), Blaze Pizza, Wings Over, Jimmy Johns, and O’Rourkes. Students often walk here on weekends, and last year construction began to extend the food and retail area from one block to three blocks. Situated in the best spot on campus, Alumni is close to everything, including Eddy Street. We highly recommend you take the 10 minute stroll over to Eddy Street to see the area and grab a bite to eat. See our professionally drawn route below for how to get there.

● Rocco’s has some of the best pizza in the area and has pretty good food besides

pizza as well. Papa Vino’s is another good Italian restaurant, and Carraba’s is as well.

● Evil Czech Brewery and Crooked Ewe Brewery are insanely good, and they both brew their own beer (which will impress your parents). Brothers on Eddy street has a similar type of food.

● For higher end food, Livery is really good and is on Eddy Street, and LaSalle Grille in South Bend has really good food.

BIOGRAPHIES Hall Government

Peter Hennessey, President

Hailing from Saint Louis, Missouri, Pete Hennessey, is one of the proudest to be an Alumni Hall Dawg. When not laying down the law at Loftus Fields with the other Dawgs on Dawg Football, Pete is spreading the Alumni spirit throughout the dorm, from rivalry with Dillon to an appreciation for Alumni’s much more impressive architecture. He truly is an inspirational leader and one of Alumni’s most exemplary Dawgs.

Liam Champion, Vice President

Alumni Hall’s VP, Liam Champion- not to be mistaken for his Irish twin, Kevin Lindsay - is a monster of a man. When you first meet him, you might be intimidated by his size, but you’ll soon come to realize that he does have a softer side to him. He’s always down for a chat in the hallway and he’s got a big smile that is illustrious, even amongst all the huge smiles in Alumni Hall. He is also the guy to know if you want to become Snapchat famous - just ask Mike Doherty and Chris Moy. Liam is certainly a treasured member of Alumni Hall for the southern hospitality he brings from his native Ohio.

Andrew Ursino, Vice President

Alumni Hall’s other VP, Andrew Ursino, is a Dawg from Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Andy’s favorite place to study in Alumni is his room on the third floor, where he occasionally displays his fine taste in music. Andy is a ready and willing friend who is the physical embodiment of the saying, “Dawgs are loyal.”
