ALUMNI STUDENT RECRUITMENT   2

Dear Volunteer, On behalf of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association and the Office of Undergraduate Admission, thank you for your willingness to support the University of Kentucky by extending our recruitment efforts across the country. We value and appreciate your time and passion. Students and parents need to hear your "see blue." stories about our campus and the experiences that made your time at the University of Kentucky truly outstanding. Students today have so many options: hundreds of TV channels, ever-growing webs of social networks and thousands of four year universities bombarding them with pleas to apply and attend. Sharing your personal experience with students and parents will help the University of Kentucky stand out among the never-ending choices. In the last year, the University of Kentucky received more than 20,000 applications for a freshman class of 5,188. We welcomed more than 15,000 student visitors to campus through our Visitor Center, and we fielded thousands of inquires about attending UK. With your help, we have the ability to personalize this sometimes daunting process and recruit our country’s most talented students. The support that you provide for the admissions process at the University of Kentucky is invaluable. As you read this training manual, you will see that there are a variety of ways for you to become involved with recruitment of prospective students. We hope this guide and your involvement with the program will provide the necessary resources for you to learn and communicate effectively what is going on at the University of Kentucky today. UK is a special and unique institution. It’s a community of students, faculty, staff and alumni committed to enhancing our Commonwealth, country and world. As you know, UK is a great place to be from – rest assured that it’s a great place for new students to be as well. As you meet with these talented prospective students, you will believe, as we do, that our future will be even brighter. "see blue.",

INTRODUCTION What is the University of Kentucky's Alumni Student Recruitment program and how can I be a part of it? Thank you for becoming a part of the University of Kentucky Alumni Student Recruitment program. Your efforts this year will provide an important link between prospective students all over the country and the University of Kentucky campus. This is a voluntary program involving University of Kentucky alumni and parents in the recruitment of prospective students. The University of Kentucky Alumni Association and the Office of Undergraduate Admission jointly support this program and its volunteers. As an alumnus of University of Kentucky or the parent of a University of Kentucky student, you are able to offer a unique and valuable perspective to prospective students. Your role as a student recruiter provides a vital component: adding a much needed personal touch to the college admissions process. As University of Kentucky’s priorities change, we have shifted the main focus of the program. In the past, this program has focused on getting the word out at college fairs and encouraging students to apply to the University of Kentucky. As the University of Kentucky continues to increase in reputation and prestige, we are now turning our focus to encouraging admitted students to enroll. Through this program, we hope to increase the University of Kentucky’s yield: the percentage of admitted students who ultimately enroll at the University of Kentucky. To that end, your personal interaction with talented students across the country is much needed to communicate the pride of the University of Kentucky community and the value of a UK degree. This training manual is the first component of your training. After looking over the information provided, we also ask you take the short online quiz (seeblue.com/alumniquiz) and enter your personal information to become a part of the UK Alumni Student Recruitment program. Once you have signed up online, you will be entered into our volunteer database and called upon for recruiting activities. Please take time to review the handbook and keep it handy for future reference. The goals of this manual are to:

• Familiarize you with the goals and activities of your university • Educate you on the talking points of University of Kentucky • Provide a resource to help you answer prospective students’ questions

We hope you will find your volunteer activities with the program fun and rewarding. The University of Kentucky is grateful for your service and we look forward to working with you in the coming year.

MISSION STATEMENT The Mission of the University of Kentucky Alumni Student Recruitment Program is to:

• Encourage talented and qualified students to apply to the University of Kentucky. • Encourage admitted students to enroll at the University of Kentucky. • Promote an accurate and holistic view of the university throughout the country, especially in

areas not reached by the Office of Undergraduate Admission. • Provide a vehicle for meaningful involvement of alumni and parents in the admissions and

college decision process. WEBSITE Please check our website regularly for updates: www.ukalumni.net/recruitment.

Sample Student Send-off Invite

VOLUNTEER ACTIVITIES As a member of the UK Alumni Student Recruitment program, you may be asked to take part in the following activities:

• Admitted student events • Prospective student events • College Fair programs • Preview Night programs • Student referrals - "Wildcat Watch"

ADMITTED STUDENT EVENTS Frequently known as "Student Send-offs" Each summer, admitted students and their families are invited to gatherings hosted by alumni in the local area. These are informal “Student Send-offs” which are held during the months of May, June, July and August. The purpose of the gathering is to introduce the students to the local UK community, make them feel welcome and inform them about what to expect during their first semester at UK. This is another important activity in our effort to increase yield. Often this is the final recruiting effort in communities across the country and is an opportunity to reach out to students who have not yet decided which college they will attend. Local alumni and current parents are able to offer a valuable perspective to accepted students and their parents. Alumni clubs across the country host these events each year. The UK Alumni Association will communicate with club presidents about these events and make sure a representative from the Office of Undergraduate Admission can attend whenever possible. The gatherings should be very casual and friendly. We recommend these events be held at local establishments, parks, etc., where attendees can mix and mingle. There is no need for a presentation at these events, as UK prefers they remain informal and focus on personal interaction with the admitted students. COLLEGE FAIRS A college fair is an event organized and sponsored by a high school, a school district or a professional education association. College fairs are programs designed to introduce high school students to many different college opportunities. Students and parents browse from table to table, ask questions and pick up literature. This may be the first opportunity for prospective students and their parents to receive information about the University of Kentucky. Members of the UK Alumni Student Recruitment program living in geographic areas considered high priority for Admissions, with potential for growth in application numbers, may be asked to represent the University of Kentucky at college fairs either with or without a representative from the Office of Undergraduate Admission. If there is a college fair in your area that needs coverage, you

will be contacted by the Alumni Association. If you are able to attend the college fair, a representative from the Alumni Association will contact you with the details of the fair and will ship a box with all that you need to successfully represent UK at the fair: admission materials and training materials. Remember that this training manual is also a valuable resource to you as you represent the University of Kentucky. TO ENSURE A SUCCESSFUL FAIR EXPERIENCE Please review the materials in your box prior to the fair. When attending a fair, please arrive 30 minutes prior to the start of the event to set up your table. Attire for most college fairs is either business or business casual; wearing blue is not required, but always encouraged! Once the fair begins, greet prospective students and parents, answer questions about UK using the information provided, pass out brochures and collect the contact information from interested students. If a student has a question you are unable to answer, it’s ok to say “I don’t know” - even our professional staff are asked questions they don't know the answer to from time to time! Please refer the student to the Office of Undergraduate Admission at www.seeblue.com, www.applyuk.com or to one of the websites listed in the FAQ’s of this handbook. Please remain at your table for the duration of the fair. After the fair, please return the contact information in the envelope provided and fill out the online college fair evaluation form at our website.

STUDENT REFERRALS www.ukalumni.net/referstudent As the “eyes and ears” of the admissions office, you are in a unique position to identify potential Wildcats from your community. They might be the sons or daughters of co-workers, friends or relatives or the young women or men that you coached on sports teams. They might be the students you whose names were just in the newspaper for making Honor Roll, winning a sports award or for being involved in a community service project. Whatever your source, if you think they would make a positive addition to the University of Kentucky, please let us know! If you know of an exceptional student in grade 9-12, talk to them about the benefits of a University of Kentucky education. Encourage them to research UK and visit the campus. Encourage students to sign up for more information on either of our Admissions' websites www.seeblue.com or www.applyuk.com. This will guarantee that the Office of Undergraduate Admission will have the student’s information and will contact him/her with more information about the University of Kentucky.

STUDENT RECRUITING ETIQUETTE Please keep these in mind when interacting with prospective students. DO:

• Be friendly, professional, positive and enthusiastic! You are a representative of the University of Kentucky.

• Read your Alumni publications regularly (Alumni Magazine, e-communications) to stay up to date on current events.

• Use this handbook and the University of Kentucky Admissions websites, www.seeblue.com and www.applyuk.com, as a resource for answering questions.

• Encourage students to take a campus visit. Visits can be scheduled online at www.uky.com/VisitorCenter. If a campus tour is not feasible, encourage them to visit our virtual tour online at www.youvisit.com/tour/uky.

• Be aware of NCAA rules when speaking to students interested in playing athletics. If a student inquires about playing a Division I sport, encourage them to reach out to the coach directly. Coaches' contact information can be found at www.ukathletics.com.

• Contact the UK Alumni Student Recruitment program staff before attending any recruiting event. All interested alumni must complete the training and the Alumni Association and the Office of Undergraduate Admission must approve all events.

• Recognize that it’s ok to say, “I don’t know.” If you don’t know the answer to a student’s question, offer to get an answer and follow up with the student, or direct him/her to one of the websites listed in this manual.

DON’T:

• Comment on a student’s chance of being admitted. Decision-making is the domain of the professional admissions staff and involves many different and complex criteria.

• Make financial aid evaluations. Circumstances differ, even in cases of similar family income. • Answer questions about which you are uncertain - offer to get an answer and follow-up with

the student. • Make comparisons between schools, as this does not reflect well on the University of

Kentucky. Speak of UK’s positive opportunities rather than emphasizing your perceptions of another institution’s negative features.

WHAT SETS UK APART? Key factors to emphasize when speaking with prospective students.

1. Endless Opportunities. With more than 200 majors, UK's depth and breadth of academic offerings is unmatched. World-class faculty members who are leading scholars in their field teach classes. Student may enhance their academic experience by participating in undergraduate research, the Honors Program, the Chellegren or Gaines Fellows programs and/or education abroad experiences.

2. Campus Transformation. The University of Kentucky is in the midst of a multi-million, multi-year transformation of our campus. More than 9,000 new residence hall beds are being added. The Student Center and Commonwealth Stadium are being renovated. A new Academic Science Building is being built and the Gatton College of Business and Economics expanded. Campus dining offerings are expanding through a new partnership with Aramark. In the fall of 2015, UK will be home to the first Panera on a college campus. UK's living-learning programs offer a unique enhancement to living on campus by having students with similar academic interests and goals living and learning in the same residence hall.

3. Getting Involved. You’ll find plenty of opportunities to grow and enhance your overall college

experience outside of the classroom. Through clubs and student organizations, you’ll have avenues for making lifelong friends and creating lasting memories, all while gaining valuable experience that will help make you a more marketable job candidate after graduation. With more than 550 student organizations and clubs ranging from academic, social, religious, cultural, arts, media, political, activism, Greek life and other special interests—there is an organization for just about anything. And if you can’t find the one you’re looking for, just grab a few friends and create it. You’ll have all the resources you need. The Center for Student Involvement (CSI) is the connection point for all students to the opportunities available at UK. The CSI is a place to discover your passion for service, leadership and involvement, serving as a resource center for the hundreds of student organizations on campus.

4. The city of Lexington. Lexington is considered one of the best college towns in America. In fact, the American Institute for Economic Research ranked Lexington the ninth best small metro college town in its 2013-14 survey. Livability.com agreed, ranking Lexington a Top 5 College Town. But what makes Lexington so great? Nestled in the heart of the Bluegrass, Lexington is a bustling, thriving city with midwestern sensibilities and small-town Southern charm. Lexington is within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the U.S. population. Here, you’ll find a unique blend of rural aesthetics with cosmopolitan amenities. The heart of downtown is just a 10-minute walk from campus residence halls, while a 10-minute drive from campus leads you to acres of rolling hills, bluegrass and picturesque horse farms. Lexington is clean, safe and home to dozens of local eateries, shops and stores that make up our city’s unique vibe. Within a short walk or a quick ride on the COLT Trolley from campus, you’ll find dozens of top-notch restaurants, coffee shops, pizza places, live music venues, dance clubs,

unique book stores, vintage CD and vinyl stores and clothing boutiques, and plenty of little shops selling all kinds of things you didn’t know you needed.

5. William T. Young Library. The centerpiece of UK Libraries' system, William T. Young Library, or "Willy T." as the students call it, is one of the finest academic libraries in the country. It is more than 365,000 square feet and seats more than 4,000 people. It is home to a plethora of academic support services and meeting spaces for students as well as computer labs and a Starbucks.

FINANCIAL AID TIMETABLE January 1 - FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) is available online February 15 – Priority Admission Application deadline ADMISSIONS FAQ’S Below are some questions commonly asked by prospective students and parents. Remember, it’s ok to say, “I don’t know!” If you do not know an answer to a question, try to refer the student to one of the websites listed in this handbook or the Admissions website where they will find links to many campus departments at www.seeblue.com or www.applyuk.com. Students may also call and speak with an admissions counselor at 859-257-2000. QUICK LOOK INSIDE THE 2014 VIEWBOOK Visits to campus – page 79 10 Steps to Becoming a Wildcat (application checklist) – page 62-63 Cost/Scholarship – page 66-67 I currently have a GPA of _ and ACT score of _. Do I have a good chance of being admitted to UK? The University of Kentucky utilizes a holistic admissions process that considers each student individually based on ACT/SAT scores, pre-college curriculum, GPA, a letter of recommendation, extra-curricular activities, leadership, and an essay. The average admitted student in the fall 2013 had a 3.63 GPA and a 25.3 ACT composite. However, adding a leadership position at school or in your community can only help you, and you may really enjoy it! What majors do you offer? UK offers more than 200 academic programs. A list of the majors is listed in the view book. What is there to do on campus? There more than 550 student organizations, concerts and special events on campus. Lexington offers many opportunities with its close proximity to campus. Keeneland Race Course is only minutes away. How many people receive an Otis A. Singletary Scholarship? Last year, the University of Kentucky welcomed to campus a record class of 50 Singletary Scholars. The application for the Singletary Scholarship is part of the Application for Admission, with an application deadline of December 1. If you have additional questions about the interview process and timeline, we suggest you contact one of our admissions counselors at www.uky.edu/Admission/recruiters. What is the standard timeline in regards to receiving notification on the status of your application? The timeline for receiving admission status notification varies on the time of the year when a student applies. High school students can start applying for admission in August of their senior year. Those students who choose to apply in August, September or October should expect to know their status

in as little as 2-3 weeks after all materials are submitted. Those students who wait to apply until November, December or January may wait closer to 4-5 weeks to receive their decision. As the year progresses the admission office receives more and more applications, thus increasing the time between application completion and decision. I want to go to UK but I'm not sure how I could afford it. Could you give an estimate of financial aid/scholarship packages? I encourage you to visit our Financial Aid website (www.uky.edu/financialaid) and click on ‘Net Price Calculator.’ That website will give you an estimate of total cost and approximate financial aid that may be available to you. What is the date to apply for Fall 2015? You can start applying Aug. 1 for the 2015-16 school year. You can find more information at www.uky.edu/Admission/application. Can your scholarships and financial aid be used towards Greek Housing or an apartment if you are not living on campus? Can you use aid/loans/scholarships to pay for club dues too? All financial aid and scholarships are applied to total tuition and fees. However, if the aid exceeds the total cost, the difference will be remitted to the student. From there, you can use the difference however you like. If you have any additional questions, please feel free to contact the Office of Student Financial Aid at 859-257-3172. I was wondering if I could schedule a visit to shadow a current student. Is there any way I could do that? There are several Wildcat Ambassadors that would be glad to help you at the Visitor Center. To schedule a visit to UK - please visit www.uky.edu/VisitorCenter. We look forward to seeing you! Where do I get information on double majoring? Double majors are always a possibility for UK students seeking to combine disciplines and expand their knowledge. If you want to declare a double major, you should consult with your academic advisor. For incoming freshman, you can get more information about double majoring at your advising conference. What is the standard timeline in regards to receiving notification on the status of your application? The timeline for receiving admission status notification varies on the time of the year when a student applies. High school students can start applying for admission in August of their senior year. Those students who choose to apply in August, September or October should expect to know their status in as little as 2-3 weeks after all materials are submitted. Those students who wait to apply until November, December, or January may wait closer to 4-5 weeks to receive their decision. As the year progresses the admission office receives more and more applications, thus increasing the time between application completion and decision. What’s the likelihood I would get a job when I graduated if I went to UK? Unfortunately we are not able to keep track of specific percentages or exact plans of all of our graduates, but we do know that the students who take advantage of the resources on campus are

Page 18: ALUMNI STUDENT RECRUITMENT PROGRAM - … STUDENT RECRUITMENT PROGRAM 2014-15 Training Manual ! ALUMNI STUDENT RECRUITMENT !2 Dear Volunteer, On behalf of the University of Kentucky

much more likely to get into the graduate program of their choice, find a wonderful internship or land their dream job upon graduation. For example, the Stuckert Career Center, right on campus, offers free career counseling and personality tests and they host events like career fairs, resume workshops and mock interviews each semester to help you identify and achieve your goals. Those resources are not just for seniors either. You can start preparing for your post-college job search as soon as you step foot on campus. Also, taking advantage of the Big Blue Nation is a great way to network, and many recent graduates join the UK Alumni Association to stay connected to potential jobs around the world.
