25 YEARS OF THE

ARTS

Page 2: Alys Stephens Center

ON SEPTEMBER 18, 1996, THE ALYS STEPHENS CENTER

WAS FOUNDED ON THE CAMPUS OF THE UNIVERSITY

OF ALABAMA AT BIRMINGHAM AS A LASTING TRIBUTE

TO THE LATE MRS. ALYS ROBINSON STEPHENS, A

LIFELONG PATRON OF THE ARTS AND A WELL-KNOWN

AND LOVED MEMBER OF THE BIRMINGHAM COMMUNITY.

The Alys Stephens Center became the home of the Alabama Symphony

Orchestra as well as UAB’s Department of Music and Department of

Theatre. The Center quickly became the hub for entertainment and arts

education in Birmingham and central Alabama. Today, the Alys Stephens

Center has established itself as the premier center for arts and education

in the area, with more than 100,000 visitors annually. As the University of

Alabama at Birmingham’s performing arts center, we are proud to serve

as a bridge to the arts for the campus and Birmingham community.

SIERRA HULL

In her first 25 years alone, singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Sierra Hull hit more milestones than many musicians accomplish in a lifetime. After making her Grand Ole Opry debut at the age of 10, the Tennessee-bred virtuoso mandolinist played Carnegie Hall at age 12, then landed a deal with Rounder Records just a year later. Now 28 years old, Hull has delivered her fourth full-length for Rounder: an elegantly inventive and endlessly captivating album, “25 Trips.” Don’t miss Sierra Hull’s first Jemison Concert Hall performance!

Open ears and an open mind are the essence of singer, guitarist and songwriter Cray’s approach to writing, recording and playing music. He has created a sound that rises from roots

and blues music and is yet fresh and familiar today. In the past 40 years, Cray and his band have recorded 20 studio releases, 15 of which have been on the Billboard charts, and played in bars, concert halls, festivals and arenas around the world. Enjoy a night of great blues music —

Grammy award winner and MacArthur Fellow Chris Thile, a member of Punch Brothers and Nickel Creek, and now the host of "Live from Here," is a mandolin virtuoso, composer and vocalist. With his broad outlook that encompasses classical, rock, jazz and bluegrass, Thile transcends the borders of conventional genres, creating a distinctly American canon and a new musical aesthetic for performers and audiences alike. Thile's newest album, “Laysongs,” is his first truly solo album: It’s just Thile, his voice and his mandolin, on a set of nine new tracks, combining original songs with three covers that contextualize and banter with his ideas.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater grew from a now-fabled performance in March 1958 at the 92nd Street Y in New York City. Led by American dance icon Alvin Ailey and a group of young African American modern dancers, that performance changed forever the perception of American dance. Engage your emotions when Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater returns with works that touch on timely topics. This past July, the documentary “Ailey” was released sharing with viewers a feeling about Alvin Ailey: how grace and eloquence, fire and obsession merged within him.

The career of Grammy award-winning cellist Yo-Yo Ma is a testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate

with audiences and to his personal desire for artistic growth and renewal. Ma maintains a balance between performances as

soloist with orchestras worldwide and his recital and chamber music activities. Pianist Kathryn Stott and Yo-Yo Ma have been

collaborating since 1985. From their performances, it is evident that they are also great friends. Ma and Stott's most recent

collaboration is a new album, offering consolation and connection in the face of fear and isolation. "Songs of Comfort and Hope"

includes 21 new recordings, which span modern arrangementsof traditional folk tunes, canonical pop songs, jazz standards,

and mainstays from the western classical repertoire.

If you’re new to classical music, or if a symphony performance seems daunting, go ahead and put your mind at ease. The most important aspect of attending any symphony performance is to relax and enjoy yourself. Simply listen and watch as the talented ASO musicians play live music in unison. And soon, you’ll find yourself enjoying their presence as much as they enjoy yours. From classic to contemporary symphonies, every one of them tells a story. As an audience member, you’re a part of that story. Because without you, there’d be no music. Since 1921, the Alabama Symphony Orchestra, ASO, has grown to become the state’s premier performing arts organization and only full-time professional orchestra.
