INVESTING IN THE FUTUREDear Dealer Colleagues,

We are investing heavily in our future and the following article demonstrates this, so I would like to invite you to the World Dealer Conference, which will take place in the early part of 2015. A ‘save the date’ will be issued during the summer, which will be followed up by a formal invitation towards the end of the year along with more information about the event.

The Conference will provide an exciting opportunity to give you an insight into the future of the company. I hope to see you there.

Christian MartiGlobal Sales Director

Work is under way on what is one of the most significant and exciting developments at the Aston Martin factory and global HQ for several years, as the business prepares to substantially grow its manufacturing facilities and workforce.

A £20m programme to extend existing manufacturing capabilities is currently under way. This investment underpins exciting forthcoming new model programmes.

Preparations are well advanced on an extension to our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Gaydon, Warwickshire, as the business gears up for its next generation of new sports cars.

Alongside the building work, we are also embarking on a recruitment drive with around 250 new jobs in engineering, manufacturing and commercial functions being created over the course of the next few months.

The specifics of the ambitious development plan at Gaydon include the creation of a new chassis and pilot build facility, new offices, and an extension of the parts and logistics storage area. The new facilities will cover an extra

10,000 square metres and the major development work is due to be completed in 2015.

Aston Martin Chief Financial Officer, Hanno Kirner said: “The investment in our Gaydon HQ forms part of our long-term strategy which is focused around being the number one British luxury sports car brand.”

Keith Stanton, Aston Martin Manufacturing Operations Director, said: “I am very happy to be able to execute another part of our manufacturing strategy by extending our already highly-efficient facility.

“The improvements at Gaydon are a big step forward, and the development will enable us to streamline and finesse our manufacturing processes which, in turn, will allow us to be leaner and even more competitive.”

He added: “We have the vision of being the best producer in the luxury sports car sector and a new facility, along with the support of our flexible, highly-efficient workforce, will enable us to achieve our goal.”

Meanwhile, more than 500 applications have been submitted for the 12 places available in the latest round of the highly-regarded apprenticeship scheme, as we continue our mission to recruit and train the cream of the automotive sector’s future manufacturing personnel. Beyond its significant investment in, and commitment to, the development of its apprentices, Aston Martin will welcome 14 new graduates to the business in 2014.

Aston Martin Chief Financial Officer, Hanno Kirner, said: “We have confirmed that the coming years will see Aston Martin implementing the biggest investment programme in the 101-year history of the brand, with a plan to inject over £500m into the company’s next generation of high performance sports cars.”

Aston Martin Design Director, Marek Reichman concluded: “This announcement adds important detail to our ambitious plan, and underlines our wholehearted commitment to continue to design and develop the world’s most iconic sports cars through investment in numerous areas of design, engineering, manufacturing and technology.”

First of all, welcome to Aston Martin. Thank you. I’m really excited about having the opportunity to steer this brand and support our future sales achievement. I’ve had some great jobs in the past, but whenever I tell people about my new job, they all have a great reaction. It says a lot of about the appeal and soul of this brand – it’s something that I know other brands envy and would pay millions to have.

What’s your background? My background is 22 years of Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Marketing,

and Sales. I’ve had a mixed background in developing, building, launching, marketing and selling cars – from studio to factory to showroom. I’ve worked for Rover (remember them?), Land Rover, BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce in locations from Swindon to Munich, Oxford to Singapore……and also a place called Gaydon. It’s in my most recent regional roles, transferring that knowledge into selling cars alongside dealers, that changed my perspective of our business. It is true to say being responsible for a monthly sales target is a character building experience!

What is the most exciting project you’ve worked on and what are you most proud of?I can’t choose between three of them. In my Design Engineering days, it was the MINI concept work that was a lot of fun and knowing your own handy work has been built into 100’s of thousands of cars is something special. Second it has to be the re-launch of Rolls-Royce with Phantom. We literally started with nothing, no customers, no dealers, no car, no factory. It wobbled for a bit early on, testing our resolve, but to be a part of that whole process is something I’ll always cherish fondly. Thirdly, launching Ghost as Product Manager, while also re-locating to Asia into my Regional Marketing role. It was fascinating to personally experience the rapid growth of

China and witness the knock on effect to the rest of Asia while finding new dealers and customers.

What are you looking forward to working on?I’m looking forward to being part of a complete car company that is about to embark on a momentous change. I say complete, because having the full Factory, Design, Engineering and Headquarters in one location has got to be a good thing – even before I started I heard good things about the culture in Gaydon. Although budgets and resources are tight, there is a lot to be said for an agile, flexible team where each individual makes a contribution that can be felt immediately.

Finally, what is your favourite Aston Martin? It’s got to be a Vanquish Volante. I am a big fan of roadsters and convertibles in general, but this car is the ultimate Aston – the very latest of what we can do. My two daughters are still (relatively) small so will just squeeze in the back behind my long legs…..in my mind I can just about justify it, although my wife would say different. The triumph of emotion over all other thoughts is what we do well.

Thank you. Dan joins Aston Martin at the start of July.

THIS ISSUE WE SPOKE TO DAN BALMER, THE NEW GENERAL MANAGER FOR GLOBAL MARKETING, ABOUT HIS EXPERIENCE AND WHAT HE’S MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO ABOUT WORKING FOR ASTON MARTIN.

SPOTLIGHT ON: MARKETING

What is your position at Daimler? My assignment started in July 2013 and involves the responsibility for the Daimler Group strategy and Product Planning & Strategy for the Mercedes-Benz Cars division (MBC). Since AMG is an integrated part of MBC, this includes the responsibility for our performance brand AMG.

What is your role in the partnership?I am in charge of the overall MBC strategy, so the development and establishment of co-operations and strategic/technical partnerships are integral. Therefore, I took the position of the non-voting director for Daimler AG on the Board of Aston Martin.

Why Aston Martin? What attracted Daimler to the partnership?

As you might know, we at Mercedes-Benz and Daimler AG have a long relationship with Aston Martin. The Lagonda SUV study, which was shown by Aston Martin at the Auto Show in Geneva in 2009, was the first visible outcome of our talks. Since then, we have pursued several other ideas which finally led to the current co-operation scheme. Other than this, Aston Martin’s brand and cars are attractive for everyone who has an “emotional” relationship to luxury sports-cars.

What do you think the partnership will mean long-term for Aston Martin?

I personally believe that the ingredients from Aston Martin and Mercedes-AMG are a profound basis for a very bright future for

Aston Martin, its products and our partnership. We will jointly discuss and evaluate further long-term options based on the currently agreed partnership scheme.

What are you most excited about working on with Aston Martin?

Being part of a much larger automotive manufacturer myself, it’s great to experience and see how Aston Martin has established its own way of running the business of a low volume, luxury car company. It’s much more familiar to how we run our performance brand Mercedes-AMG but quite different from Daimler.

What do you think the biggest challenges will be?

As I said earlier: all the ingredients are there! And it’s our joint challenge to make the co-operation between Daimler AG, Mercedes-AMG and Aston Martin successful. Working in a partnership, one of the key success factors obviously is to make it a “win-win” for both parties.

WE ALSO SPOKE TO WILKO ANDREAS STARK, VICE PRESIDENT OF DAIMLER STRATEGY, ABOUT WHAT THE TECHNICAL PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN ASTON MARTIN, DAIMLER AND MERCEDES-AMG MEANS TO HIM.

Service Clinics are an automotive industry standard and Aston Martin has been running them for 20 years. They offer the perfect opportunity for you, as a dealer, and us, as a manufactuer, to speak directly to customers on a one on one basis about their car and their Aston Martin experience. This enables both of us to rectify any issues a customer might have with their car while also providing you with the opportunity to build stronger relationships and sell further products.

Service Clinics should be viewed as an event, which needs to be carefully organised in order to achieve maximum results. The format of the event has recently been updated along with a supporting instructional manual that includes everything you need to know in order to run a successful event.

The more you put in, the more you are likely to get out. Many dealers who have held these events have offered customers the chance to drive our latest models in an effort to upsell. Others have displayed accessories and merchandise clearly, so customers can browse while they are waiting for their car to be serviced.

Some dealers have also publicised the events in magazines and have issued press releases.

Service Clinics offer a fantastic opportunity for a three way conversation between the dealer, the customer and the manufacturer that can strengthen existing relationships immensly.

The updated instruction manual can be found on DCS. If you have any queries or would like further assistance in running a Service Clinic please contact your Regional After Sales Manager.

SERVICE CLINICS

The Parts Department is pleased to report that reversing camera kits are now available for Vantage, DB9 and Rapide.* All kits feature a precision-made wide-angle camera mounted discreetly above the rear number plate, providing significantly improved visibility when reversing and confidence when manoeuvring in tight spaces. The ‘zero-lux’ cameras used in all kits ensure excellent vision, even in low light conditions, and the ‘fish-eye’ lenses give a 170 degree horizontal viewing angle to improve visibility of objects and moving vehicles normally restricted from view. The lenses are pre-treated with an anti-static and anti-fog coating to reduce the build-up of moisture and road dirt, ensuring excellent clarity of view.

This valuable and desirable upgrade, offers you opportunities with both your existing owners and pre-owned customers. Don’t forget to use the dedicated e-shots on DCS to promote these upgrades.

* Vantage – available for all models except 12MY. DB9 – up to 11MY only. Rapide – up to 11MY only.
