Tlio machine has no' balloon attachment, hut gets Its force from propellers worked by a small engine. Preparutijry to. its* flight tho machino was placed upon a platform near Kitty Hawk, N, C. This platform was built on a high sand hill and when all was In rendí' noce, the fastenings to tho machine wnro released, and it started down an inclino. The navigator, Wilbur Wright, then start¬ ed a small gasoline engine which work-d the propellerà. When the end of tho In¬ clino was reached tho machino gradually (iroso until lt obtained un altitude of sixty feet. Ho was taken to tho Home and Retreat, Lynchburg, and Dr. Dlllard operated on tie hand and managed to save three fin¬ gers and the thumb. The middle finger liad to bo taken out at the wrist, Dr. Dlllard also performed a success¬ ful operation on Mr. John Thomas, who lives near Bedford City. Tho operation ho performed is known in sur¬ gery as "Lynos," and leaves tho patient with a sufficient, portion of the foot to walk firmly, and thoro Is no perceptible shortening of the limb.
