A 3-day Workshop with Lynn Slade Valuable Values October 11, 12 and 13 9 AM to 4 PM Held in the studio in Pioneer Interesting value shapes in a painting are more important to the success of the painting than the color itself. Seeing these ab-stract values in your subject matter is one of the first and most difficult things for an artist to understand. Learn about the power of these valuable values, how to find them in our subject matter and connect them with transitional passages. In addition, we’ll learn the concept of 80/20 in a composition, how to find and make a focal point stand out and direct the viewer’s eye to it. Understanding these design concepts can help take your paintings to the next level. The workshop will explore collage techniques using a variety of rice papers. Combining color and texture, we’ll work toward creating a dramatic finished work. Class size is limited. $140 List of supplies and additional details upon enrollment. For further information contact Lynn at [email protected] or 209-295-4667

Press Release from Sutter Creek Gallery

Loretta Armstrong, creator of a unique style she calls “Whimsical Toons,” is Sutter Creek Gallery’s artist of the month for October. In her own words, she “has been painting forever” in oils from her high school days until today. She attended school in Ione and lived on Five Mile Drive on an old dairy riding horses and turning her surroundings into art. She has used many different styles and painted a variety of subjects over the years. One of these is her painted chickens which are very popular with collectors in the U.S. and Europe. Armstrong paints on a daily basis and currently is concentrating on portraits, landscapes, and animals, along with a

style she has been developing for the past few years. Loose, colorful and fun, her “Whimsical Toons” are free and happy. These images, which are pulled out of her head and transferred onto canvas, feature twisted and turned lines with lots of color and texture. Her “inner child” shines through in this fun style which has drawn an enthusiastic following. Finding inspiration in local sites, many of Armstrong’s paintings depict homes, schools, churches and vistas fa-miliar to local residents, some rendered in her “toon” style and others in a more traditional manner. The spooky houses and harvest scenes are especially appealing at this time of year. Armstrong was commis-sioned to paint a mural depicting the Cemeteries and

Churches of Sutter Creek, which is one of the murals hanging in the Sutter Creek Auditorium. Her work is featured in numerous venues throughout Amador County. Sutter Creek Gallery invites you to spend some time with the artist at a reception on Saturday, October 5, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., as part of the region’s First Saturday Art Trek. Loretta Arm-strong is one of 30 artists exhibiting at the gallery located in the heart of Sutter Creek at 35 Main Street, where her original paintings, prints and cards are available. The gallery is open Wednesday and Thursday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fri-day and Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For additional information, call 209-267-0228 or email [email protected].

The titles are: “Let the Good Times Roll,” “You Are My Sunshine,” and “Sunflower.”

Mad Brad Returns to HANFORD ST. GALLERY While studying archeology in the early 60's Brad Devereaux's exposure to the coun-terculture was inevitable. The influence persists today. From exploring ancient civili-zations he moved to the inner psyche as a mental health worker all the while savor-ing the world of the coffeehouse. Not today's drive-thru non-stop caffeine purveyor, but the sort of place with an atmosphere of inquiry and contemplation. The kind of place where cynicism is tempered with art, poetry and music. Over his 16 years as a clinical social worker, Brad developed a deep appreciation for the importance of inter-personal communication and an equally deep desire to explore visual art as a path-way for that communication.

"Eventually I understood my calling to be an artist; but for a long time I held onto my job in social work out of sense of duty." Finally he made the commitment to art full time. Brad's paints might be laid down on a stretched canvas or just as likely on something constructed from scraps found around his workshop/studio. Bright colors and wild patterns eventually resolve into something you rec-ognize. Something from the everyday world or discovered in your innermost depths. Neither strictly representational or abstract, his work is designed to evoke a response from the viewer.

"It is meaningful for me when people pause for a moment and search for an awareness of their own reactions when viewing my work. Whatever someone finds in one of my pieces is OK with me if they have honestly attempted to truly see what might be there." Opening October 3rd at the Hanford St. Gallery in Sutter Creek, the show will run through October 27. There will be a reception for the artist on Oct. 5th from 4 to 7pm as part of the Amador 1st Saturday Art Trek. Located one minute north of downtown Sutter Creek at 291 Hanford St. (Next to the Days Inn Motel) the Hanford St. Gal-lery is open Thursday thru Sunday from

11am to 5pm. For more information call 209-267-8074 or email [email protected].

Abuse of Women is Theme of Gallery 10's Featured Artist for October

Half the Sky is the title of Jerry Kidd's new art being featured at Gallery 10 for the month of October. The title is from a Chinese proverb, Women Hold Up Half The Sky. Kidd's exhibit was inspired by the

authors Nicholas D. Kristof and Sheryl Wu Dunn. In their book, the couple writes in graphic detail of the world wide sexual enslavement of children. Lest we think the problem exists solely in Southeast Asia, we are reminded that over a dozen children were recently rescued in San Francisco and 120

pimps across the country were arrested.

"These works," says Kidd, "are my personal outcry against misogyny, the abuse of women, and the

sexual enslavement of children." The paintings are not soothing, decorative or intended for "parlor

room hanging." They are very visceral, calling upon the viewer to experience and intense visual confrontation. "It's an ugly subject," says Kidd, "but when our attitude towards the abuse of women

becomes blase - when the subject of child enslave-ment becomes passe - the world then plummets

into utter darkness!" This show is the third in the artist's trilogy of explor-ing the world which is exclusive to women's

experience. His first exhibit dealt with the Goddess theme and the warrior strength of the female. His second show was an expression of the three stag-es of womanhood - maiden, mother, and wise

elder. Kidd's current visual statements strike out against how they have suffered within

patriarchal societies. Kidd's show is in support of Operation Care which sponsors Domestic Violence Awareness during

the month of October. A reception for the artist will be held at Gallery 10 on October 5, from 2-4pm. The gallery is located at 15 Eureka St., Sutter Creek and the show will continue through October. For further information, call Gallery 10 at 209-267-0203 or visit www.gallery10suttercreek.com. Gallery
