Amanwella is situated amidst a maturecoconut grove fronting a crescentshaped beach close to the village ofTangalle in southern Sri Lanka. Theresort derives its name by combiningthe words ‘aman ’ or peace in Sanskrit, and ‘wella ’, the Sinhalese name forbeach. Flanked by two rocky head-lands and raised above the beach, theresort comprises 30 suites, each withits own terrace and plunge pool.

The entrance is reachedalong a small gravel road, which leads into the pebbled courtyard.

The resort’s architecturepays homage to Sri Lanka’srenowned architect Geoffrey Bawa, with itsuse of materials such asstone, timber and clay tiles.

As the writer and diarist Leonard Woolfsaid a century ago about Tangalle:

“The evening air is warm and gentle. An enormous sky meets an enormoussea. The stars blaze in the sky and blazein the sea… there is no sound in thismelodrama of a tropical night except afaint lapping of the sea,and now andthen a shivery stir of palm leaves.”
