A silver lining for South Africa?THANKGodStandardandPoors

has left our credit rating atBBBminus.

This is the lowest rating a countrycan have.

If South Africa was downgradedany further, it would fall in the realmof junkstatus.ThismeansthatSAwillpay higher interest rates when itborrows money, with someinstitutions refusing to grant SouthAfrica a loan at all.

The Standard and Poorsreasoning for keeping the rateunchanged seems skewed. Itmentions the falling oil prices ashaving a positive impact onconsumers and the economy.

Little does it realise that the priceof fuel has increased, together withthe Road Accident Fund and the fuellevy. These increases nullify anybenefit to the struggling consumer.

SouthAfrica’sgrowth forecasthas

been further downgraded from 2,5%to a miniscule two percent.

Currently the budget deficit is thehighest since the advent of democra-cy 20 years ago.

The tax base is stagnant, with 1,2millionpaying70%of the taxes.Thenthere is the amount of R30 billion oftaxpayers’ money that disappearsinto thin air through unauthorisedexpenditure and corruption.

The rand has slumped to its

weakest level against the dollar in 13years.

It now stands at R12.30/$1whichwill negatively impact on commodityprices, puttingaddedpressureon thestruggling cash strapped consumer.Municipalities are a state with aR93 billionbail-outplanonthecards.The finance minister has finallyconceded that cadre deployment, coupled with unqualified chieffinancial officers and municipal

managers will destroy this fledglingdemocracy.Unskilledpublicservantswill destroy this country if nothing isdone soon.

The only positive emanating fromeverythingjuststatedisthatStandardand Poors will leave our ratingunchanged for the next two years.

There always seems to be a cloudwith a silver lining.

Fruity condoms not the answerTHE Department of Health’sdesperation to reduce the incidenceof new HIV infections among ouryoung people is understandable.

But to think that the introductionof coloured condoms with a fruityfragrance is a useful aid to that endis tragically laughable.

It demeans our young people,

sending a message that it is anacceptable pattern of behaviour toexperimentwith promiscuous “fun”with little attention to theconsequences.

It will make it more difficult forthosewhowant to liveresponsibly tosay “no”. Condoms fail as apreventive of HIV transmission and

of pregnancy, especially when usedby young people who have beenencouraged to experiment.

The most important reason forour nation leading the way in theincidence of rape, HIV and teenagepregnancy is the destruction of ourfamily life.

Rebuild family life, help fathers tobe fathers who are present to theirchildren, help parents to nurturethem in a godly moral code, which

includes loving one’s neighbour asmuch as one loves oneself, and wewill be on the road to recovery.

Until that happens, and thegovernment, themediaandteacherscome to that party, we will go onwringing ourhands indespair at thedeteriorating situation in which wefind ourselves.

In endometriosis, tissue thatlooks and acts like endometrialtissue is found outside the uterus, usually inside the abdominalcavity. This misplaced tissue actslike it would if it were inside theuterus. More oestrogen is pro-duced than progesterone, result-ing in hormonal imbalances too.Over time, scarring or adhesionsinside the reproductive organs, pelvis, and intestines can appear. Some of the common symptomsare painful and heavy menstrua-tion cycles, chronic pelvic painand reduced fertility.

There are four stages of thisdisease, ranging from minor tomajor severity: subtle, typical,

Respect eachother indivorceALL over the world, including SouthAfrica, the divorce rate amongcouplesofallsocialclasses, racialandethnic groups is increasing.

Those who deal with this issue orare going through a divorce believe itneedsdialogueandexposureinorderto reduce the stigma and painattached to it.

Although divorce should be thelast resort or option and should beavoided asmuch as possible, it is nota sin or a crime.

Ifthegrievancesareirreconcilableand every reconciliation approachfails then divorce may be the betterand more rational route.

If the couple feels that continuingthe marriage will lead to more hurtand resentment and the rift betweenthe husband and wife will deepen, then make the divorce respectful, dignified and amicable.

Respect each other’s feelings andspace, and refrain from any negativecomments, vindictiveness andanimosity.

Unfortunately, society at largedoes not make it any easier for thedivorcing couple. People tend toperpetuate the couple’s misery byencouraging gossip and mud-sling-ing.

If the community and extendedfamily provide comfort and supportrather than add fuel to the fire, itmakes the whole process of divorcemore tenableand life for thedivorcedcouple can go on with minimal hurtand scarring.

autofever‘Zero % won’t save lives’

THE proposed changes tothe legal blood-alcohol limitwill do nothing to reduce

the appalling death toll on our roads,so says forensic expert Dr GavinKirk. While drunk drivers are

undoubtedly an important factor incausing deaths on our roads, thisis not the way to improve thesituation.

That is because it is not basedon any evidence and appears to bean attempt to “do something” aboutthe situation even if it makes nosense.

In a national survey of transportfatalities conducted at South Africanmedico-legal mortuaries in 2004it was found that 50% of driverswho died in road traffic collisionstested positive for alcohol – a strongindicationof the linkofalcohol to fatalcollisions.

However, the mean blood alcoholconcentration in these drivers was0.17g/100ml, which is more thanthree times the current legallimit. While thisstudyismorethan10years old, there is no reason tosuspect that the situation is anydifferent today.

There are other problems thatarise out of the proposed changes.

A number of high profile caseshave already shown how vulnerablelaboratoryresults canbe tochallengein court. This will become ever moreso if drivers whose blood alcoholconcentrations are close to zero areprosecuted.

Those proposing the changesareobviouslyunawareof the fact thatwe all produce small amounts ofendogenous alcohol naturally withinour bodies and that any laboratoryanalysis must provide for areasonable margin of error.

The proposed lawwould be fertileground for defence attorneys.

Rather than changing the lawin a way that will do nothing toreduce fatal collisions, what needsto be done is to properly enforce thecurrent law.

Toti cyclist out in force

CYCLING Club members had a great timeat Karkloof falls where they rode atShawswood, and there were plenty ofdifferent tracks combatted this weekend.

The forest in Karkloof is a mountainbikers playground, with routes ranging

from pretty easy to super difficult. Thereare fantastic surprises and challenges atevery turn.

The beginners group ended up on a trailthat was pretty hard, but they attacked itwith gusto, some on their behinds and

some buying some land, but all finishedwith huge stories to tell and improvedtechnical abilities.

Two of the crew were having such funthat they went way off track and ended upright out of the Karkloof trails. TweedleDum and Tweedle Dee were spottedpedalling like crazy on the tar rode headingback to the starting venue after everyonehad enjoyed a good breakfast and coffeeat the farmers market.

Two local riders, Bryan Powell and RossKeen, started riding the Cape Epic onSunday, 15 March and the best of luck iswished for them to keep strong.

Toti Mambas now has a strong D groupup and running which is being led by TonyRahme.

This is a great opportunity for beginnerriderstojumponthebandwagonandlearnthe ropes. The C group has now moved upa peg and are attacking the big hills of theIllovo outback. There is also a large groupriding on the road early on the weekdaymornings.
