B abies love being carried – and they have loved it for thousands of years.Close physical contact with a parent meets babies’ fundamental needfor security and ultimately helps turn them into self-confident and

independent individuals. What’s more, carrying babies correctly also enablesthem to adopt an optimal posture, which is crucial for physical development.Not without reason do anthropologists often describe newborn babies asmarsupials.

B abies have rounded backs when they are born. For nine months, their C-shaped spine has been perfectly tailored to the space available in thewomb. Now the spine has to gradually straighten out. This is a gentle

process that takes a whole year and is only completed when babies can standup on their own and take their first tentative steps.

Furthermore, babies’ legs were bent up in the cramped space in the womb.What would look like a dislocated hip on an adult is actually extremely goodfor the development of the hip joint socket. The hip joints of a newborn baby,who has a skeleton that mainly comprises rubbery cartilage rather than“proper” bone, now have to cope with being slowly straightened out over atwelve-month period.

So that the hip joint sockets can stabilize properly, the hip joints should beflexed as often as possible and not stretched unnaturally.

These medical facts help you to develop an understanding of how to care foryour newborn baby. It’s better to carry your baby than push him around in abuggy at arm’s length. Make sure that his back is rounded and his legs areflexed at the knee. And when your baby is lying down, you should also give himthe opportunity to round his back, instead of stretching his spine for hours inhis cot.

AMAZONAS® helps street children

In Brazil approximately 25,000 children live completelyneglected in the streets. Every day they fight for survival.

To make a humane existence possible for these children, theorganization “Der Kleine Nazareno e.V.” was established in 1994.And within the last ten years, two Nazareno villages werefounded, which today offer a new home for more than 110children.

These Nazareno villages situated outside the centres ofFortaleza and Recife offer these children shelter in which theywill be looked after around the clock. From the very first day on,they attend one of their own government-recognized schoolswith the option to attend a secondary school. Starting at age 15,schooling is supplemented with practical vocational training.After that the children are supported in the search foremployment, and accompanied step by step until finally theystand on their own feet.

“We from AMAZONAS® have personally taken a lookat this aid project on site, which has moved andconvinced us so, that we support it with an annualdonation of 20,000 €. So we, and you as our customer,can not only provide work and progress through thehammock production to Brazil, but additionally create afuture for Brazilian street children.”
