A unique robotic pet for toddlers

(aged 1-3 and above)

ambi

Why did we choose the name Ambi?

• Because we could not think of a better name.

• If you rearrange the letters, you get the word ‘imba’, a gaming term which means ‘great’.

• It’s a cute and simple name that toddlers would like.

• It is the prefix of the word ‘ambiguous’. This shows that our robot can teach and play with toddlers of both genders.

Potential market for toddlers

Many robots created for the elderly in the market

REASONS FOR BUILDING AMBI

Most robots built for toddlers are meant for entertainment, not learningNowadays, parents are often busy with work and have little time to spend with their children

Points of Consideration

• Weight• Height

• Safety• Colour • Clothes

• Durability (ears made of soft material)• Buttons on front body • Battery securely fastened• Programs suited for different ages (online software

upgrades)• Emotional link, prolonged human-robot interaction• English and Chinese languages

More points to consider

Short attention span of children

Include noises, lights

Challenge childrens’ minds to pique their interest

e.g. simple puzzles

Robot interacts with child in its activitiese.g. Supermarket shopping game

(this will be elaborated in later slides)

Supermarket Shopping Game

A miniature supermarket is set up.

Contains large plastic toys with RFID tags securely embedded in them

(children are less likely to swallow larger objects)

Passive RFID tags (no internal power supply)

Supermarket Shopping Game:Modes

Learning Mode

•Object recognition•Colours

“Let’s Shop!” Mode

•Revision of information learnt•Good manners

Supermarket Shopping Game:

Teaching ModeRobotPicks up items andidentifies themTeaches child the name ofthe objectChild Hands the robot an item to identify it

If child is able to pronounce the name of the item, the robot gives words of encouragement and claps. Advocates learning

Supermarket Shopping Game:

“Let’s Shop!” Mode Child and robot act as

buyers or sellers Payment is in the form of an

activity requested by the ‘seller’

e.g. when the child purchases an apple, the robot will ask the child to sing/dance/name the item as “payment”

Good manners taughte.g. Before the child leaves with the apple,

he/she must say ‘thank you’, while the robot says “You are welcome, please visit my store again!” and smiles.

• If robot is unable to perform what the child requests:

Robot says “Sorry, I cannot do that. May I dance/sing instead?”

• If child rejects robot’s offer: Robot frowns and says “I don’t want the apple anymore,

sorry.”• If child forgets to thank robot, robot will remind

child to do so. Robot frowns and says, “Please say thank you to me…”

Supermarket Shopping Game:

“Let’s Shop!” Mode

How can the child

benefit from

the game?

Learning Outcomes

Speech, vocabulary

• Teacher-student format• Parents’ pronunciation may not always be accurate!• Learn names of common items

+ nursery rhymestheFingerFamily.mp3

+ Good manners(e.g. phrases like ‘thank

you’)

+ Basic colour recognition

+ Counting, numbers

More Learning Outcomes

Emotions

• Pressure-sensitive head

• Sadness, happiness

pat

hit

Timer Function

• Reminds user to let the robot go to ‘sleep’ after robot is turned on for a certain time

• Allows for human social interaction

Low battery plan

• Robot says that it is ‘sleepy’ at low battery levels (~20%)

• User has to place robot in a specially designed bed

Psychological Impact

“Dr. Takanori Shibata, the creator of Paro (a robotic seal), has found that interaction with cute, cuddly robots lowered stress, elevated moods and decreased depression.”

Health Benefits

Parents and children alike will be able to de-stress from playing with our robot

Social Benefits

Children will learn how to interact with other people and feel less lonely or depressed when their parents are at work

Cultivate a new breed of smart children for world domination!!!

By end of November:

• Surveys (done!)- colour and design of robot (ask children)- interest of parents in our robot (street survey)

• Research- on childrens’ education pedagogy (learning of language) - building and programming

Our Plans

By end of December:

• Construction- voice recording- mechanical parts- programming- outer covering- bed charger- buttons

MORE INCREDIBLE PLANS

• Testing- Durability- technical glitches

Thank you for your kind attention

EVERYONE

WANTS

ONE!(or maybe more)

Unwanted slides from this slide on.

You’d take pity on them, wouldn’t you?
