Neff, a brand beloved of buddinggourmet chefs, presents a sneakpreview at Eurocucina 2010 of itsnew FlexInduction T44T43N0hob, which does just what its name says it does. Thanks to the flexible cooking area, which covers half the cooktop surfaceand measures 760 cm2, severalcooking receptacles ranging
in size from one-cup espresso pots to casserole dishes can be used at the same time, as needs dictate to prepare different dishes at the same time.Added to this flexibility there is also the extra speed typical of induction cooking -not coincidentally the method preferred by professional chefs - which Neff has now further stepped up thanks to the Power function that reduces cooking timesfrom 30% to 60%. Meanwhile, Neff’s Powermanagement function adapts the heatabsorbed to the timer, without affecting performance and cooking results. The FlexInduction hob is also equipped with the exclusive TwistPad ® knob,a removable magnetised control that allows the user to keep all the hob’s functions under control with a single gesture. When the knob is removed, all the cooking areas still in use are switched offautomatically, leaving the surface free for easy cleaning.

The island unit is a place of the spirit, as well as
a self-enclosed world unto itself in which activities
normally done in unlimited spaces are necessarily
confined to a well-defined space. Generally speaking
the island unit is the central functional heart of the home
kitchen. Here we prepare, wash and cook food, and eat
breakfast and lunch, very often with more than one
activity going on at the same time. Clearly, then,
the design of a breakfast bar needs to be studied down
to the last detail: here everything has to be compact,
without a single centimetre of space wasted, all in
the name of making it easier to work and move around.
And the new kitchen blocks not only mean efficient
preparation areas, but often also places to enjoy
an aperitif, a snack or a quick meal in company.
The three most fashionable kinds of island unit right
now are those with a snack bar higher than the worktop
(90/92 cm off the ground), those with snack-tops
designed as a continuation of the countertop and those
equipped with an actual dining table that can be used
at breakfast, lunch and dinner time. One particularly
interesting solution in this regard is the solution designed
for the City model, from Doimo Cucine, which offers
a smart take on the kitchen living space concept.
It is a table that extracts manually from the side
of the island, with the advantage of folding tidily
away out of sight when the space is being used as
a living-room. And the City table comes in two lengths
- 90 and 160 cm - in proportion to the length of
the kitchen block into which it is to fit.
Snack bars designed as continuations of the worktop,
meanwhile, can be found on designs from Poggenpohl
and Scavolini, while Euromobil and Aster have designed
islands with long cantilevered snack bars.
Other snack bars are designed as spaces in their own
right, their top slightly higher than the island worktop,
such as the Loggia model, from Copat, featuring new
materials and luxury finishes and an elegantly new classic
style, as well as from Snaidero, an ergonomic
and technological gem, on which the dual-height
surfaces appear in a beautifully fluid polished steel,
laid as if like a piece of fabric over the island.
Similarly “soft” is the mirror shelf-hood over the worktop
in which it is reflected, its LED spotlights
(designed by the Fiat Auto research centre) creating
gleaming surfaces everywhere.

VENUSFluid movement is the main feature of Venus, a kitchen designed by Pininfarina, which has successfully created a highly theatrical effectthanks to new forms and materials and an innovative use of light. This expressive power blends with the soft contouring of the cabinets and floor units, worktops and shelves above, in symmetrical or parallelarrangements. The tall and base units, which are of different depths, are joined by connecting elements that create curving movement on thecomposition. The photo shows the snack-bar with a curry-yellow glosslacquered finish, combined with matt ebony cabinetry comprising larder units (length: 120 cm, depth: 72 cm), connecting tall units and standard tall units.

WORKING AREA GREAT FREEDOM OF COMPOSITION FOR THE LARGE “AMERICAN-STYLE” REFRIGERATORS, A BLEND OF AESTHETIC APPEAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL FEATURES FOR TOP-PERFORMANCE APPLIANCES.
In keeping with new lifestyles, the interest in gourmet
cooking and the pleasures of receiving friends and family
in the welcoming spaces of the home we need roomy
appliances to store large quantities of food
in the best way possible for as long as possible.
Today’s new models mean fewer trips to the supermarket,
saving on time and fuel costs, to say nothing of the
environmental advantages of spending less time in
the car. Today’s maxi cold storage has to offer maxi
- almost professional - performance features so that
the individual requirements of the various types of food
stored are respected, with separate compartments
for meat, fish, cheese and fresh vegetables to store them
at the temperature and humidity level best suited to them
so they do not lose any of their freshness, appearance
or flavour. The most advanced products also meet
the highest expectations in terms of aesthetics and
technology, and are built using high-quality materials
that are specially sanitised on the fridge interior side
to deodorize the appliance and keep out bacteria.
Finally, these appliances are designed to suit the most
demanding consumers: an attractive addition to the
kitchen, whether as a free-standing or built-in solution,
finished in stainless steel or, if requested, supplied to take
personalised panels to match the adjoining units,
thus offering interior architects and furnishers plenty
of freedom with their compositions.

VISUALLY STRIKING, ELEGANT DESIGNMEETS FUNCTIONAL EFFICIENCY:PRESENTING FRANKE’S NEW,HORIZONTALLY DESIGNED STOVETOP
With Neptune 1200, Franke revamps its Neptune
system for a more modern, informal kitchen.
The stovetop features four in-line burners
with front knobs, a solution designed to achieve
maximum ergonomic and functional efficiency,
one of the reasons for the horizontal arrangement
of the burners. The most powerful rings are placed
at either end, so that more than one large cooking
receptacle can be used at the same time.
From an aesthetic point of view, this lowered hob
blends seamlessly with the rest of the worktop,
an effect enhanced by the fact that the burners
actually lie below the worktop surface
and the pan stands appear to fit flush with it.
The matt-finish cast-iron stands, which also act
as a heat shield, are divided into two parts
that can easily be removed when they need
to go in the dishwasher. Availabe both in a built-in
and flush-fitting version, Neptune 1200 blends
perfectly into island and pier kitchen solutions.

SQUARES AND RECTANGLES IN AN INTERPLAY OF CHANGING FORMS. WITH
THE REMARKABLE HANDLE CARVED INTO THE DOOR CREATED FOR THE KITCHEN
FRONTS BY MARC SADLER, ERNESTOMEDA’S CARRÉ SYSTEM IS A KITCHEN
WITH A MULTI-SIDED CHARACTER THAT LOOKS GOOD IN ANY INTERIOR SPACE
AND CAN BE COMPOSED IN A VARIETY OF WAYS TO SUIT PERSONAL TASTES.
INSIDE
by Paola Leone
The handle is the distinctive featureof Marc Sadler’s new kitchen: instead of the traditionalhandgrip it becomes a hollowed section of the front, elegantand functional, and creatingcontrasting geometriceffects on the frontsand floor units.
The Carré front comesin a wide range of finishes: glosslacquer (46 colours)and matt lacquer (46 colours), olive or rosewood veneerand semi-gloss steel.
THE FIRM Excellence in a “business format”:
this is a good definition of Ernestomeda,
one of Italy’s leading kitchen manufacturers,
where design, technology, quality and product
development have converged to give rise
to ten quite unique collections.
Founded in 1966 in Montelabbate, where
it is still located (the plant covers a surface
area of over 32,000 square metres), since
the mid-1990s Ernestomeda has drawn
on the services of some of the biggest Italian
and international design names, constructing
a very precise style heavily geared towards
innovation, so much so in fact that the brand
has become a beacon of new stylistic
and design trends for the entire kitchen
and furnishings sector.
With Castiglia Associati, Pietro Arosio
and Rodolfo Dordoni, Ernestomeda has
created highly successful models such
as Silverbox, the celebrated kitchen in staved
aluminium, Elektra a system of great elegance
and formal restraint, and Barrique,
a sophisticated transposition of wine and food
culture, while with “superstar” designers
Zaha Hadid and Jean Nouvel, Ernestomeda
has pursued a path of experimentation leading
to the production of some extremely advanced
creations. The first project of this kind is
Z.Island, by Zaha Hadid, which since 2006 has
been on show at the Guggenheim in New York:
an island “of ice” in which Corian becomes
a fluid material constructing a hi-tech,
futuristic kitchen unit full of LEDs, USB points,
mp3 players, CDs and DVDs. The other
outstanding project was designed by
Jean Nouvel in 2007: Corian Nouvel Lumières
is a home environment with amazing light
effects featuring incandescently rear-lit Corian
surfaces. Design of the highest order, then,
is what Ernestomeda is all about - an approach
seen also in the ultra-compact, ultra-efficient
kitchens created with Yacht Division: no detail
was overlooked in the design of its kitchens
or “galleys” for yachts, mega-yachts
and other pleasure craft in collaboration
with the Custom Line, CRN and Pershing
(Ferretti Group) shipyards.
Ernestomeda kitchens are displayed
in numerous multi-brand interior design stores
in Italy and abroad as well as in the various
single-brand showrooms in some of the
world’s big cities: Milano, Bari, Florence,
Madrid, Athens, Lugano, Chicago, Los Angeles
and Seoul, where from next summer Marc
Sadler’s latest creation, the Carré model,
will also be on display.

DESIGN “Many people say they hate
the rigid structure of minimalist kitchens
and agree that the kitchen is the home
owner’s most representative reception space,
and as a result often embellished
with personal items, family heirlooms and
travel souvenirs: this is the starting point
for Carré, which, if I had to define it in one
word, I would call ‘multi-faceted’ to explain
its many different qualities.”
These are the words of Marc Sadler,
designer of the new Carré kitchen system.
As he himself explains, it is capable
of interpreting the different spaces into
which it is built and the lifestyles of its users.
Carré’s secret lies in its versatility, which
enables it to blend easily into different
interior design concepts, from city living
spaces to the “semi-country” kitchens
of homes in rural areas.
And the detail around which this versatility
hinges, as well as the distinguishing feature
of the model is the handle carved into the
door, an arrangement of bas-relief squares
and rectangles that intertwine to create
different geometric figures with a total
of no fewer than ten different combinations
possible. With it, everyone can create their
own version of Carré and design its fronts,
taking advantage of the almost limitless
choice of available finishes for the fronts
and for the bas-relief handle carved into the
door: 46 gloss or matt lacquered shades.
In additions, the backs of the handles also
come in steel, rosewood or olive wood.
Carré is, then, designed to be put together
to suit personal tastes.
Sadler likens it to a “bitmap image made up
of a series of pixels that can change the final
overall effect.”
TECHNOLOGY The new models comes
at the end of three years of studies
and experimentation that exploited
to the full the opportunities for composition
offered by Ermestomeda kitchen systems,
offering a creative design backed up
by high-end technology that expressing itself
in the system’s strongest feature, the fronts,
which are made using craft production
techniques. To create the hollows that form
the handles, the fronts are milled using
an exclusive manufacturing process.
Attached to the back of the milled panel
is a smaller panel that forms the back
of the handle and is interchangeable, since
it is secured to the front using Torks screws
that bear the Ernestomeda logo and
can be changed at any time to change the
material appearance or colour of the kitchen.
There are dozens of different finishes
to choose from, to create a one-colour or
contrasting two-tone look with the handles.
And that’s not all that can be varied on Carré.
With the three-tiered layering system
(patented) it is possible to create ever-
changing solutions using materials combined
variously together, such as Corian, Unicolor
laminate, marble and granite, quartz, steel
and Okite. Besides this there are the end
pieces for the base and tall units - 126, 198,
234 and 252 cm in height - featuring open
shelving that can be used, say, as a
bookcase, while the painted sheet metal
Regent hood, created by Sadler exclusively
for Ernestomeda, uses LED lighting, houses
a filter-extractor motor with a power of
1,000 m3/h, is operated from a Soft Touch
electronic control panel and comes in ice,
black and Nuance red. A feature that gives
the kitchen that extra touch of class.
Total living, semicountry, or even “all-white” for lessdaring users: Carrécaters to a whole range of interior design needs.
The Layer worktop(patented) has threelayers in differentmaterials: Corian,Unicolor laminate, marble or granite, quartz, steel, Okite.
For the extremities of the floor and tallunits, the open shelvingwith a gloss or mattlacquered finish in standard colourscreate continuitybetween the kitchenand living areas.
Marc Sadler,designer of Carré.

There’s a revolution going on
in the natural stone business.
Permeability to staining,
which has always been
the weakness of granite
and other stone products,
is a thing of the past now
that there is Sensa by
Cosentino®, a new granite
surface brand featuring a
water-repellent, anti-staining
finish.We all know that
granite is one of the most
heavy duty and durable
natural materials, but
Cosentino wanted to give
it that property it had been
missing until now: stain
resistance. It has done so
through a revolutionary
treatment that involves
adding a chemical binder
