EDITOR’S NOTE

Wow …. don’t think I ever saw a summer so chockablock full of club rides and meets …. excellent!! That much fine food and good company is probably illegal, but as long as we keep to the side roads we’ll be OK.

This past quarter (June thru September) has seen some brouhaha floating around between AMCA National and officers from local chapters. Some valid points have been raised, some spleens vented and some mud slung. On both sides there has been a

genuine attempt to reach common ground (and respect) and that looks to be an ongoing process. Personally I would like to weigh in on one activity in our club at this point in time: the push to recruit. Of course we need members (and revenue) just to exist as a club …. but what we really need is PARTICIPATING members. Currently the Viking Chapter claims just north of

200 souls. Of those, approximately 35 do all the work (strictly on a volunteer basis) and participate in the majority of club activities. Club officers reluctantly get recycled because others will not step up. So my two cents …. we really need members

who are willing to participate at club meetings, help make decisions (i.e: become a club officer) and share the work that goes into our meets and activities … these three tasks are the life blood of our club. The more active participants the easier it is. Volunteer and/or run for office … we need YOU!

As we head into fall and I haul out the snowblower for an oil change, I would like to thank my fellow club members for some

wonderful summer memories and the kind of camaraderie that money cannot buy. BTW - My special thanks to Stan Mewhorter who keeps lists of all members (and their bikes) who participate in our rides.

I can hardly believe we have arrived at September already. It seems the riding season just got up to full speed a couple of weeks ago. In spite of the fact that it seems the season has been short we have had some great events starting with our Nation-

al Meet at the State Fairgrounds in June. That was followed by the Blind Lizard Rally, the Presidents ride and camping week-end at Money Creek, the club ride to Sturgis, a great ride with the VJMC, the Volkfest ride-in show in Victoria, the Gear Head Get Together, our annual chicken BBQ, and a great show at the Gillespie Center in Mound. And that’s only a partial list.

There were also other events that were not Viking Chapter events but well attended annual events. The fall season has always been my favorite season to ride and there are many events and rides to suit everyone. Don’t miss a

minute of it. Check out the schedule and get out and ride – old bike, new bike or something in between. Just get out and enjoy the ride. All too soon snow will fly and we will be confined to the shop to make necessary repairs or continue work on that special project that hasn’t been touched since spring. Instead of thinking of winter as the non-riding season think of it as the

time to get ready for the next riding season. Remember all those little things you wanted to do but were out riding instead? Winter is your season to get them done. You will be amazed how quickly winter will turn to spring, the snow will melt, and

the new riding season will be here.

I want to make special mention of our September 16th general meeting that will be hosted by Fury Motorcycles in South Saint

Paul. This is the meeting where elections take place for club officers. (Nominations were made at the BBQ meeting in Au-

gust.) This is also the meeting where the second reading of and vote on the proposed addition to the club by-laws will occur.

This is an important meeting and I encourage all of you to attend and have a voice in the future of the Viking Chapter. We’ll

see you there.

Ride to Hollywood Roadhouse, June 6, 2015

This was the second club ride of the year, the first being the Vintage Spring Ride (which was covered in the last issue). We met up

at Bob Hopf’s place and hit the road just after 11am. After a picturesque ride through country roads (and a couple of detours) we

arrived at The Hollywood Roadhouse, that infamous watering hole in New Germany owned and operated by fellow member Paul

Joswick. After wining and dining we took a few photo ops on the wooden Harley before hitting the road home.

AMCA National Meet - Minnesota State Fairgrounds, June 12 thru 14, 2015

A very successful and enjoyable event was once again held in concert with the local VJMC Twin Cities chapter. A big tip of the hel-

met goes to those folks who did the lion’s share of the organizing, setup and teardown. (Special kudos to Sean O’Neil) Also our

volunteers, without whom this event just couldn’t happen. We also appreciate all the work done on the VJMC side of the aisle to

make this such a success …. thanks Chip Miller and company! And while we’re at it let’s not forget the turnout by the Ton-Up Club

and their contribution.

This year’s theme was off-road bikes, which were well represented among classics from around the world.

AMCA National Meet - Minnesota State Fairgrounds, June 12 thru 14, 2015 (cont.)

On Friday evening we had our banquet (yum!) where the featured speaker

was Dwayne Wagoner, an engineer and marketing analyst from Polaris

Industries who had some pertinent information on the promotion of the

new Indian brand of motorcycles. Most interesting was his take on their

R&D and what they did to come up with their incredibly successful new

Indian Scout line and also the goings on behind the scenes that decide

which new models they will bring to the marketplace.

Then, after the show ended on Saturday we went for a club ride along the St Paul and Minneapolis River Roads and wound up at the

Como Park Grill for some grog and grub. This was fun since the past two years our ride has been rained out.

Geez Keith it will never stay on!

We lucked out with a beautiful summer evening and a fantastic turnout at our annual ice cream social to meet & greet our vets at the

memories of their own riding days. The pictures kinda tell the story.

Chaska BBQ, August 16, 2015

This year’s meeting was held at McKnight park, our third venue in three years. Facilities were definitely adequate and special thanks

to Paul Joswick for the loan of his massive mobile BBQ so we could get all that meat done. Special thanks also to Tom & Cheryl

Whittles, Doug & Diane Nelson, and Jerry & Trudi Richards for their work preparing and cooking the food … much appreciated.

Besides everyone socializing and catching up on club gossip, probably the most important aspect is the nomination of new club of-

ficers for the coming year. This year’s open positions and nominees are: Gary Kloss for President, Dena Natins for Treasurer, Da-

vid Glennen for Membership Coordinator and Laurie Zick & David Glennen for Directors. Voting will take place at the September

General Meeting to be held on Wednesday September 16th at Fury Motors in South St Paul (see calendar on Page 2).

Also this year we are voting to amend our by-laws by adding a clause to address sexual harassment and bullying. This must be ap-

proved by a two-thirds majority at two consecutive general meetings. This was passed at this BBQ general meeting and the next

vote will be taken at the Fury Motors general meeting. If approved a second time it will be incorporated into our by-laws.

Runs, Meets & A Tech Tip

TECH TIP: Removing Surface Rust from Chrome

I have tried many off-the-shelf concoctions to remove rust spots from chrome but guess what works the best - diet coke and aluminum foil. No really … it works!

Tear off a piece of aluminum foil and scrunch it up, then pour some diet coke on the affected area and some on the aluminum foil. Rub the affected area and watch the rust spots vanish. The foil will not mar the chrome surface. I follow up and buff the area with polish afterwards.

Note: Regular coke will make your hands sticky.
