[13:14] Rissa Maidstone applauds [13:14] Gigs Taggart: nope [13:14] Haver Cole: ao off

[13:15] Adri Saarinen: Everyone direct your attention up here to the podium,

Schmenge is going to give a presentation about AMD's connectivity outreach

foundation

[13:15] Haver Cole: hahaha [13:15] Peter Newell: jerk. [13:15] Jeff McGuire: hey schmenge - welcome [13:15] Frans Charming: carolinekerr, say hi in the open, they won't bite [13:15] Rissa Maidstone smiles at Dually [13:15] Dually Goalpost: :D [13:15] Peter Newell settles in and listens. [13:15] Rissa Maidstone chuckles. [13:16] Rissa Maidstone: Welcome back Yazz [13:16] Yazzara Robbiani: Hi! [13:16] Rissa Maidstone: Come have a seat with us

Schmenge Writer: 50x15 Presentation

[13:16] Schmenge Writer: Hello. Sorry I'm experiencing some lag here. But I'm

ready to begin in a second.

[13:16] Rissa Maidstone: in the peach outfit [13:16] Haver Cole: ride the lag Schmenge! [13:17] Rissa Maidstone: grin [13:17] Schmenge Writer: :-) [13:17] Dually Goalpost: haha [13:17] Doubledown Tandino: dont fight the laaag [13:17] Doubledown Tandino: let it become you [13:17] Dually Goalpost: Be one with the lag [13:17] Rissa Maidstone: a new mantra! [13:17] Adri Saarinen: It's like zen [13:17] Schmenge Writer: Lag is my friend? :) [13:17] Adri Saarinen: But with SL servers [13:17] Doubledown Tandino: Zen in the art of lag [13:17] Rissa Maidstone: Lag is rush hour traffic [13:17] Adri Saarinen: That's for sure

Page 3: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[13:18] Doubledown Tandino: rush hour traffic and looking out the window to see grey trees [13:18] Frans Charming: brb

[13:18] Schmenge Writer: OK! Want to hear about 50x15?!

[13:18] Adri Saarinen: YAY! [13:18] Adri Saarinen applauds! [13:18] Dually Goalpost: Yaya! [13:18] Jeff McGuire: absolutely [13:19] otakup0pe Neumann: It sounds delightful.

[13:19] Schmenge Writer: 50x15 means "Connecting half the world's population to

the Internet & computing devices by 2015.

[13:20] Schmenge Writer: It's about "Connecting the Digital Divide" or as we call

it "Digital Inclusion" :)

[13:20] Schmenge Writer: It's about connecting students in emerging growth

countries like Brazil & continents like Africa

[13:21] Schmenge Writer: If we don't global societies will be stacked out of favor

[13:22] Schmenge Writer: So, AMD was wise enough to recognize the benefits of

"connecting" the world

[13:22] Haver Cole: /meeeno welcome have a seta:d [13:22] Menno Ophelia: Merci [13:22] Haver Cole: /er seat

[13:22] Schmenge Writer: Hence our Vision "A connected global population."

[13:22] Menno Ophelia: waiting for the rezz before i bump into someone

[13:23] Schmenge Writer: Some important things to know: we are a for profit

venture & we recognize that we cannot do this alone.

[13:24] Schmenge Writer: As of this month, just 18% of the world has Internet

access.

[13:24] Rhiannon Chatnoir: how is this in line with say others who are concerned with

things like this.. like the United Nations and their ICT programs of bringing technology

to the devloping world

[13:24] Schmenge Writer: So, we h ave our work cut out for us!

[13:24] Rhiannon Chatnoir was at one of the UN ICT forum days.. :)

[13:25] Schmenge Writer: But we are making an impact around the world.

[13:25] Schmenge Writer: Here's how!

[13:26] Schmenge Writer: 50x15 isn't just about dumping PCs in classrooms. It's a

methodical, structured program with 3 main parts:

[13:26] Schmenge Writer: Learning Labs, a Partner program & in the near future

a 50x15 charitable Foundation

[13:27] Schmenge Writer: How am I doing on time, friends?

[13:28] Haver Cole: preety good! [13:28] Adri Saarinen: You're doing fine. :) [13:28] Adri Saarinen: We'll do questions during Doubledown's next set

[13:28] Schmenge Writer: To conitinue: Learning Labs are classrooms and such

that we deploy, using PCs w/ AMD processors, of course...

[13:29] Schmenge Writer: But we can only deploy them w/ companies that have

expertise that far exceeds our own

Page 4: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[13:30] Schmenge Writer: By that I mean companies like "inveneo," which

provides solar powered connectivity. But i digress :)

[13:30] Schmenge Writer: Here are some real world examples of 50x15 Learning

Labs:

[13:31] Schmenge Writer: Uganda, S. Africa, the first of many under a partnership

with NEPAD, defined on the screen behind me

[13:32] Schmenge Writer: The Learning Labs here are already paying dividends as

three schools now have computers & Internet access

[13:33] Schmenge Writer: This has enabled a whole new set of citizens to

experience a new world, so to speak...

[13:33] Schmenge Writer: The children are so much more interested in coming to

school & that's "priceless"! :)

[13:34] Walk and Talk v1.22 whispers: Rhiannon Chatnoir took a copy of Walk and Talk Help [13:34] Adri Saarinen applauds! [13:34] otakup0pe Neumann claps [13:35] Rhiannon Chatnoir: afk

[13:35] Schmenge Writer: But sometimes we help to connect more than just

children...In Brazil we've connected a school where the students are e now teaching

senior citizens!

[13:35] Jeff McGuire: cool

[13:36] Schmenge Writer: So far, more than 500 seniors have benefitted -- for some

it has allowed them to expand their social contacts and learn new skills

[13:37] Schmenge Writer: One woman told 50x15 that the Oldnet Learning Lab

has "Given her new hope!"

[13:37] Haver Cole: hahah @ old net

[13:37] Schmenge Writer: She now emails her grandchildren

[13:38] Schmenge Writer: We've deployed in China, too, partnering with Lenovo

and Dawning to connect

[13:39] Schmenge Writer: literally millions of students in 18 Chinese provinces.

[13:40] Schmenge Writer: Our goal? to help bring China's rural education system

up to par with those in other major cities.

[13:40] Schmenge Writer: One more thing about learning Labs:

[13:41] Schmenge Writer: We've catalogued each one -- we call them "Capsules"

... this is so ANYONE can take a capsule and build their own lab from our

experiences,

[13:42] Peter Newell claps, "Very interesting." [13:42] otakup0pe Neumann: This certainy is interestng.

[13:42] Schmenge Writer: which are 100% shared and open to anyone. Why?

Because we know that in order to reach our goal

[13:42] Schmenge Writer: we can't do it alone. 50x15 is completely transparent.

[13:43] Schmenge Writer: Speaking of "not being able to do it alone" (my first SL

segue :)

[13:43] Gigs Taggart: hehe

[13:44] Schmenge Writer: WE have established the 50x15 Partner Program

[13:44] Schmenge Writer: Much like SL, we want to build a community

Page 5: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[13:45] Adri Saarinen: Which sounds like it might be a good point to go into questions, is that ok, Schmenge? We have about fifteen minutes before Jeff's presentation on AMD Careers. :)

[13:45] Schmenge Writer: We call it our "ecosystem" -- that focuses on six key

areas -- areas that help us build those Learning Labs I mentioned.

[13:46] Schmenge Writer: Sure!! I'll skip ahead a few slides -- I'm almost done so

this is good timing

[13:46] Killian Klein: ao off

[13:47] Schmenge Writer: Our strategic partners

[13:47] otakup0pe Neumann: This is very interesting schmenge. [13:47] Killian Klein: So am I at the cool kids table? [13:47] Haver Cole: shh and ye syou are

[13:47] Schmenge Writer: And a foundation coming soon will allow individuals to

donate

[13:47] Haver Cole: watch the presentation!

[13:48] Schmenge Writer: Finally ...

[13:48] Dually Goalpost: By the way, check out the 50x15 display area in our main exhibit hall, due east :D

[13:48] Schmenge Writer: Stop by our Video Display Room and Kiosk in the AMD

Pavilion!!

[13:48] Schmenge Writer: Questions?

[13:48] Adri Saarinen applauds! [13:49] Adri Saarinen: Thank you, Schmenge! [13:49] Adri Saarinen: Rhiannon had a question earlier, let me pull it up [13:49] Carbonel Tigereye applauds [13:49] Schmenge Writer: Thanks, everyone! My pleasure!! [13:49] Gigs Taggart: woo [13:49] Schmenge Writer: This was very cool :) [13:49] otakup0pe Neumann: i have one ;) what sort of donations are you looking for.

learning seems a goal, is the group interested n partnering with content providers ?

[13:50] Dually Goalpost: Thank you very much, Schmenge! [13:50] Jeff McGuire: have a seat michael [13:50] Rissa Maidstone: Thank you, Schmenge :) [13:50] Rissa Maidstone: Will there be a transcript available?

[13:50] Schmenge Writer: Yes. We are. Six parts of our partner program: Power,

connectivity, Devices, Financing, CONTENT & Expertise.

[13:50] Jeff McGuire: Thanks Schmenge - I have a question. How does 50x15 tie in to

OLPC?

[13:51] Rissa Maidstone smiles. [13:51] Peter Newell: Also, what is the time goal for 100%? ^^

[13:51] Schmenge Writer: GREAT question! OLPC is one of many solutions 50x15

uses to provide Internet access is emerging growth markets.

[13:52] Adri Saarinen: Schmenge, here's a question from Rhiannon Chatnoir, "how is

[50x15] in line with say others who are concerned with [connectivity] .. like the United

Nations and their ICT programs of bringing technology to the devloping world"

[13:52] Christy Cosmos: yay! thx DD :)

Page 6: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[13:52] Schmenge Writer: 100%. Not sure, to be honest. We have a lot of work to

do to connect half that and only 8 years left!

[13:52] Doubledown Tandino: hi Christy! [13:53] Doubledown Tandino: wanna be my dj assistant today? [13:53] Christy Cosmos: hiya slim! great set the other night! [13:53] Slim Warrior: /hey:) ty [13:53] Rhiannon Chatnoir: back.. thanks Adri [13:53] Christy Cosmos: haha, and what exactly would that entail DD?? i'm not rooting around in your dusty old record boxes for any amount of glindens....lol!

[13:54] Schmenge Writer: Another good question! 50x15 is intimately involved in

organizations such as the World Economic Forum and TED, which allow us to work

closely with other top orgs ...

[13:55] Schmenge Writer: If you visit our website (shameless plug :)

www.50x15.com, you'll see a Resource Links section with hundreds of like orgs

listed.

[13:55] Adri Saarinen: http://www.50x15.com is the website :)

[13:55] Schmenge Writer: We all need to work together. The UN, Architecture for

Humanity, etc.

[13:55] Rhiannon Chatnoir: yes [13:55] Dually Goalpost: And if you forget, we have more information in the 50x15 display room, next door! [13:56] Adri Saarinen applauds! [13:56] Peter Newell claps, "Thank you Schmenge!" [13:56] Adri Saarinen: Thank you Schmenge! [13:56] Christy Cosmos: shameless plug! lol

[13:56] Schmenge Writer: Yes, thanks Dually!

[13:56] Haver Cole: woots

[13:56] Schmenge Writer: Again, my pleasuure!! I'll fly away and watch the rest of

the show!! :)

[13:57] InvisibleJet: All Go [13:57] Haver Cole: /relogging on second [13:57] Adri Saarinen: Hi Discorida :) [13:58] Discordia Zenovka: Heya! [13:59] Menno Ophelia: brb [13:59] Killian Klein: ok [13:59] Adri Saarinen: Don't forget, if you don't have your music controls turned on, click play [13:59] Adri Saarinen: DJ Doubledown is spinning some great tunes, and coming up in about 20 minutes, we'll have electronica goddess Slim Warrior playing! [14:00] Haver Cole: hoowheeee [14:00] Discordia Zenovka: Oooh, nice. [14:00] Jeff McGuire: danicing on the tables again! lol [14:00] Haver Cole: haha who me? [14:00] Haver Cole: im dancing withj the tetris!

[14:00] Adri Saarinen: But first, AMD recruiter Jeff McGuire is going to give a

short presentation on AMD careers!

Page 7: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[14:01] Peter Newell: wb menno [14:01] Menno Ophelia: thankies [14:01] Menno Ophelia: i missed peter in my back [14:01] Haver Cole: you were inside him [14:01] Haver Cole: it was hot. [14:01] Menno Ophelia: sst dont tell adri [14:02] Adri Saarinen laughs [14:02] otakup0pe Neumann: :o [14:02] Peter Newell: hah :D [14:02] Haver Cole says nossing [14:02] Adri Saarinen: Ok, enough block stacking back there, let's turn it over to Jeff. :D [14:02] Adri Saarinen applauds! [14:02] Peter Newell claps and listens.

Jeff McGuire: AMD Careers

[14:03] Jeff McGuire: Welcome to the AMD Summer Tech mixer. I hope you have

been enjoying yourself. Paul aka DuallyGoalpost, and the staff at Metaversatility

have done an excellent job in developing this island and organizing this event.

[14:03] Dually Goalpost: w00t!

[14:03] Jeff McGuire: Today, I want to chat about AMD, what we believe in, where

we came from, where we are going, career opportunities, benefits, our co-op

program and then answer any questions that you might have.

[14:04] Jeff McGuire: To really understand where a company is going it helps to

understand the leadership of that company. Hector Ruiz is our CEO and if you

don’t know him, I encourage you to do some research on him. Great organizations

are led by great people and I think Hector is right up there among the best. Hector

was born and raised in Piedras Negras, Mexico.

[14:04] Jeff McGuire: One of his neighbors was an American who noticed that he

was exceptionally bright and helped him to attend school on the American side of

the border.

[14:05] Jeff McGuire: To make a long story short, he took advantage of his

opportunities and eventually earned a Ph.D in Quantum Electronics from Rice

University. Hector has guided AMD to where we are by believing in the people who

work here, believing in customer-centric innovation and equipping AMDers to

deliver technology that is second to none in its innovation and value to customers.

[14:06] Jeff McGuire: AMD's culture is characterized by an indomitable will to

succeed and prosper in one of the world's most challenging industries. At the heart

of our unique and strong culture is the belief that people are the ultimate source of

our competitive advantage.

[14:06] Jeff McGuire: By living these core values, each one of us helps to deliver on

our promises to customers, maximize shareholder value and ensure our enduring

success.

Page 8: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[14:07] Jeff McGuire: AMD was founded in 1969 with our headquarters in

Sunnyvale, California. We have around 16,000 employees worldwide. 78% of our

sales are international. Our revenue in 2005 was $3.9B and in 2006 it was 5.6B

[14:08] Jeff McGuire: We have come a long way. Five years ago we had 5% of the

CPU market. Today we are approaching 25%.

[14:08] Jeff McGuire: We have expanded our CPU offerings and have added key

customers such as HP, IBM, Sun, Fujitsu and more recently Dell and Toshiba.

About a year ago we combined forces with ATI which has positioned us with a

strategic ability to compete on a full platform level like never before.

[14:09] Jeff McGuire: And our customers responded. AMD now ranks #8 in

semiconductors worldwide.

[14:10] Jeff McGuire: That may be why Fortune ranked AMD #1 in Semiconductor

Innovation, and #4 as the most admired company in the semiconductor industry,

ahead of Intel.

[14:10] Jeff McGuire: How did our technology evolve to get us where we are today?

In 1999 AMD introduced a long-term solution that customers could grow with.

[14:10] Jeff McGuire: In 2003 we permanently changed the IT landscape with the

introduction of the AMD Opteron processor.

[14:11] Jeff McGuire: In 2005, we showed the industry how to make the transition

from single-core to native dual-core.

[14:11] Jeff McGuire: In the next month or two, we believe the launch of

‘Barcelona’ will have an even greater impact. Beyond that we are looking towards a

product named ‘Fusion’ which will merge the CPU and GPU functions.

[14:11] Jeff McGuire: AMD is a global processing powerhouse and we are looking

for talent worldwide. If you look at the career kiosks in the lobby today you will see

15 Software development related opportunities. Most of these positions are mid to

senior level.

[14:12] Jeff McGuire: However, we have a very aggressive Co-op, Intern, and new

college graduate program and we are constantly on the lookout for talent at all

levels.

[14:12] Jeff McGuire: We are looking for skills in Sales, Marketing, Finance, Legal,

Manufacturing, R&D, and Design to name a few.

[14:12] Haver Cole: goo interns! [14:12] otakup0pe Neumann: hehe.

[14:12] Jeff McGuire: Yeah. Go Interns!

[14:12] Jeff McGuire: Let's talk about that

[14:13] Jeff McGuire: .AMD has an aggressive Co-op / Intern program with

medical and dental benefits, paid holidays, relocation, and fee reimbursement.

[14:14] Jeff McGuire: What is a Co-op versus an Intern? A Co-op is a student that

participates in a formal program through their university’s career center. They

complete a full time assignment during a school term and usually receive course

credit. They commit to working a minimum of two tours on an alternating basis.

[14:14] Jeff McGuire: An intern is a student that does not use their university’s

career center, usually do not receive course credit and usually work during the

summer semester.

Page 9: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[14:14] Jeff McGuire: There are some minimum requirements that must be met.

Undergrads need to maintain a 3.0, while grad students must carry a 3.5.

International students must be at the MS or PhD level. Students must have

completed their sophomore year and have at least on semester remaining after

completion of the Co-op assignment. The student must be enrolled in a program

that is relevant to the work assignment and must work full time during the entire

period.

[14:15] Jeff McGuire: pretty standard stuff

[14:15] Jeff McGuire: Let’s chat about benefits for full time, regular employees.

[14:16] Jeff McGuire: AMD offers a world class benefits package with

comprehensive medical, dental, vision, accidental death and dismemberment,

employee assistance program, on-site fitness center, a health care reimbursement

account and sick leave.

[14:16] Jeff McGuire: . These plans are very competitive with top tier companies in

the region in which the employee works.

[14:16] Jeff McGuire: Vacation: In the US, the employee receives 3 weeks of paid

vacation after one year of service. After 4 years of service, the employee will

accumulate an additional day of vacation for each year and will max out at 4 weeks

after 8 years of service.

[14:17] Jeff McGuire: All employees also receive 11 paid holidays per year. In

addition, exempt employees will receive a 4 week paid sabbatical after the first 5

years of service.

[14:17] Jeff McGuire: Financial: All employees are eligible for a 401(k) plan that

the company will match 50% on the first 6% that is invested.

[14:17] Jeff McGuire: There is also an employee stock purchase plan where AMD

stock can be bought at a 15% discount.

[14:18] Jeff McGuire: In addition there is a profit sharing plan that pays out

quarterly along with a supplemental life insurance plan.

[15:03] Mingan Munro: Hello. My name is Mingan Munro, or known in my FL as

Marc Miller, Open Source Relations Manager for

AMD.

[15:04] Haver Cole: ao off

[15:04] Mingan Munro: I would like to give you a general idea of why and how

AMD is involved in open source software.

[15:05] Mingan Munro: Unlike our competitors, we do not sell licenses to our

software, so we have nothing to gain from hiding the methods used to get the most

out of our processors.

[15:05] Mingan Munro: Open standards create a compatible yet competitive

atmosphere that benefits our customers, and as part

of AMD's commitment to "Customer-Centric Innovation" we support open

standards because we want to encourage combinations of technology that allow our

customers to be innovative too.

[15:05] Mingan Munro: It makes sense for us to continue our investments in open

source given our interest in industries that

have openly embraced open source software in the last few years:

[15:05] Mingan Munro: Finance & investments,

[15:06] Mingan Munro: online retailers such as Amazon.com,

[15:06] Mingan Munro: and the communications industry which now encompasses

data processing, telephone call routing & billing

software, and even video services like television and Internet-based broadcasting.

[15:06] Mingan Munro: So just what are AMD's investments in open source?

[15:06] JueL Resistance: WOOOOT DOUBLE

[15:06] Mingan Munro: I'd like to start off by highlighting some of our most

important ongoing activities with the open

source community to give you an idea of how AMD is involved.

[15:06] Mingan Munro: We've gotten the message loud and clear that software

developers want a compiler that is as optimized

as the Intel ICC compiler, but they don't want to have to favor one brand of

processor over another.

[15:06] JueL Resistance: SLIM and DD YOU ROCK

Page 20: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:07] Mingan Munro: Our solution was to hire a team of engineers to enhance an

already well-known high-performance compiler

(Portland Group - http://www.pgroup.com/) and put them on-site.

[15:07] Mingan Munro: Since the compiler isn't ours, PGI makes sure we don't do

something that would impair Intel processors

while at the same time implementing the very best in AMD-optimized compiler

output.

[15:07] Mingan Munro: Unfortunately PGI is a closed-source product, and thus

can't be used for certain types of Linux

software.

[15:07] otakup0pe Neumann: :(

[15:07] Mingan Munro: We respect that the Portland Group has intellectual

property they do not wish to expose, and

acknowledge that GCC is the compiler of choice for Linux.

[15:07] Mingan Munro: In support of GCC, we have a team of 4 engineers that

implement support for the newest processor

features in a completely GPL tool chain, working alongside other open source

leaders such as Novell and

Red Hat.

[15:08] Mingan Munro: Though GCC does not benefit from the Portland Group's

intellectual property in terms of performance, we

do invest a lot in making sure that GCC's performance does not lag significantly

behind the other

compilers available.

***Editorial correction 8/2/2007:

[15:08] Mingan Munro: Our team of kernel engineers is spread among the AMD

campus in Austin TX, Novell's SUSE campus in

Nuremberg, Germany, and Red Hat's campus in Raleigh, NC.

Mingan Munro: Our team of kernel engineers is spread among the AMD Operating

System Research Center based in Dresden, Germany, Novell's SUSE campus in

Nuremberg, Germany, and Red Hat's campus in Raleigh, NC.

***End correction

[15:08] Mingan Munro: This is to ensure that AMD features are implemented

properly with major Linux vendors' kernels yet are

also implemented upstream on kernel.org.

[15:08] JueL Resistance: woooOooOT

[15:08] Mingan Munro: When we designed hardware virtualization for our Next

Generation AMD Opteron product, we knew we would

need the support of an open source project to do so, in addition to alliances with

commercial

virtualization products like VMWare.

Page 21: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:08] Mingan Munro: We have a team of engineers devoted to the Xen project

that are spread all over the world. I am one of the founders of the Linux Foundation

Desktop Architects project, which unites developers

focused on primarily client-focused (workstation, kiosk, desktop, notebook, PDA,

etc.) projects to

synchronize goals, exchange ideas about solutions, and understand what aspects

still need help.

[15:09] otakup0pe Neumann: Xen 4tw.

[15:09] Mingan Munro: This has been remarkably successful, giving birth to the

Portland Project to eliminate the war between

the GNOME and KDE projects, greatly improving printer support, and

broadening the scope of the LSB

specification used to eliminate the need to recompile or rewrite the project for each

implementation of

Linux.

[15:09] Mingan Munro: I'm also on the Linux Foundation's Board of Directors,

guiding the future of the LF and making sure

that Linus Torvalds continues to receive paychecks.

[15:09] Mingan Munro: Finally, since I know this is relevant to graphics-focused

developers like those who build software for

Second Life, at Red Hat Summit in San Diego this year, AMD announced that it

was working to finally fix

things between the Linux community and our graphics products.

[15:10] Mingan Munro: We remain committed to that goal.

[15:10] Adri Saarinen applauds!

[15:10] Mingan Munro: We can't elaborate at this stage of the process, but more

announcements to that regard are coming soon.

[15:10] Mingan Munro: I hope that has been enlightening for everyone. That

concludes my prepared material.

[15:11] Adri Saarinen applauds! [15:11] Haver Cole: yaaay [15:11] Adri Saarinen: Thank you Mingan-- let's hold questions until after otak and Eddy have spoken. [15:11] DMC Zsigmond: Thanks Mingan ; ) [15:11] Rissa Maidstone applauds. [15:11] Peter Newell claps [15:11] Adri Saarinen applauds! [15:11] Eddy Stryker applauds [15:12] otakup0pe Neumann waves [15:12] Violet Hazlitt applaudes [15:12] Dually Goalpost applauds too

otakup0pe Neumann: Pleiades Consulting and LibSL

Page 22: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:12] otakup0pe Neumann: The current iteration of the internet has its roots in

relatively open research, and is currently based on open standards. This allows

different systems to remain compatible despite the fact they may be written in

different languages in different parts of the world.

[15:12] otakup0pe Neumann: In many cases companies choose to develop

proprietary solutions based upon these standards, and that is their prerogative.

Others choose to sponsor open source projects, and in yet other cases developers

choose to work simply out of passion.

[15:13] otakup0pe Neumann: I work for an educational technology company,

Pleiades Consulting. Our products have always been heavily based on open source

and standards - from XML to Apache and beyond. Recently we have found

ourselves to be engaged in heavy development on the libsecondlife project as there is

only so much that can be done with the stock tools provided by the Second Life

platform.

[15:13] otakup0pe Neumann: When teaching, any time a course on networking

comes up I always try to show a documentary on the Internet (in the public domain)

that was created ini the 1970's at MIT. The driving reason behind this decision is to

show how, at the heart, the internet has not changed very much since it's inception.

[15:14] otakup0pe Neumann: The major change since the internet was created has

been the end users. Initially it was academics and scientists, with of course an

underlying military theme. Now everyone and their cats (see: catbook app on

facebook) is on the internet.

[15:14] Haver Cole: hahaha [15:15] Adri Saarinen: My cats love Facebook [15:15] Menno Ophelia: never saw a cube with those killer dance moves [15:15] Slim Warrior: I like Facebook, I can throw sheep [15:15] Gigs Taggart: The internet was created to add captions to cats.

[15:15] otakup0pe Neumann: The clincher of the documentary is when they

mention the "killer app" of the internet - digital commerce - a feature which

western society seemingly cannot live without.

[15:15] JueL Resistance: LOL [15:15] JueL Resistance: ooooo [15:15] JueL Resistance: i havn't face'd today [15:15] JueL Resistance: only twitterd a bit [15:15] JueL Resistance: lol [15:15] JueL Resistance: first i twitter, then i face [15:15] JueL Resistance: th'ts my Kink [15:15] JueL Resistance: LOL [15:15] Chel Pixie: when do I *not* twitter? [15:16] JueL Resistance: lol CHeL [15:16] Slim Warrior: twiiter gets me, I dont even know what I am doing most of the time let alone let anyone else know [15:16] JueL Resistance: LOL

[15:16] otakup0pe Neumann: I like to think that the evolution of the metaverse will

parallel the origins of the internet itself - sans the initial military interest.

[15:16] otakup0pe Neumann: (twitter 4tw)

Page 23: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:16] otakup0pe Neumann: We are seeing an initial playing field comprised of

mostly commercial applications (There, Multiverse, Entropioa, and of course

Second Life) and many that are either moving to open source or already area

(opensimulator, open croquet, and once again Second Life).

[15:17] otakup0pe Neumann: The important thing is not opening the source code of

these applications as much as opening the protocols used to intercommunicate. Of

course, having access to a decent source base can certainly help speed up progress.

[15:18] otakup0pe Neumann: Having open protocols allows different applications

to be designed in such a fashion that will allow them to interoperate. The

relationship between the Second Life platform and libsecondlife is a perfect example

of this.

[15:18] otakup0pe Neumann: The direction opensim is moving is also evidence of

this. Currently there are only so many things that can be developed on top of the

retail Second Life platform. if you want to customize beyond that, currently you are

out of luck.

[15:19] otakup0pe Neumann: This is the void that opensim can help fill. In fact, one

of the more interesting projects my company is developing will be done in opensim.

[15:19] JueL Resistance: FKN Love this musiC

[15:19] otakup0pe Neumann: In the future, Linden Lab will have open sourced the

server. What exactly that will entail is still mostly up in the air. Given the tasty

morsels of information that have appeared in the blog and office hours the open

aspects will be confined within the "region" domain, leaving the "agent" domain

within the realm of control of Linden Lab.

[15:19] JueL Resistance: im's out of sl and in........don't mind my delay [15:19] JueL Resistance: i'm here [15:19] JueL Resistance: twittering myself [15:19] JueL Resistance: HAAA [15:19] Slim Warrior: /hehe

[15:19] otakup0pe Neumann: (heh)

[15:19] otakup0pe Neumann: This will give end users/developers the ability to

control everything that happens within a simulator, while preserving the ability to

remain connected to the retail grid.

[15:19] Rhiannon Chatnoir: ooo add me to your twitter: RhiannonSL [15:19] Dually Goalpost: Very cool!

[15:20] otakup0pe Neumann: The option to run on a completely separate grid also

exists - something that many companies and organizations will no doubt require. It's

the same distinction between an intranet webpage and an internet webpage.

[15:20] otakup0pe Neumann: I look forward to seeing a metaverse based on

completely open standards.

[15:20] otakup0pe Neumann: The future should be interesting (and delightfully

shiny).

[15:20] Adri Saarinen: Yay shiny! [15:20] Dually Goalpost likes shiny [15:20] otakup0pe Neumann: ;) [15:20] Haver Cole: oo shiny

[15:20] otakup0pe Neumann: Many developers do.

Page 24: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:20] Peter Newell: oooh shiny [15:20] Rissa Maidstone: Excellent! [15:21] Slim Warrior likes shiny too [15:21] Chel Pixie: that's why I named my macbook shiny ojbect [15:21] Chel Pixie: object* [15:21] Haver Cole: haha [15:21] Slim Warrior: lol@Chel [15:21] Haver Cole: i call mine paperweight [15:21] Lucian Halasy: would that mean that individuals could run their own sims on

their own hardware?

[15:21] otakup0pe Neumann: So questions after...

[15:21] otakup0pe Neumann: Lucian, that is correct.

[15:21] Chel Pixie: i couldn't figure it out [15:21] Adri Saarinen: Yes, we'll do questions after Eddy's talk [15:21] JueL Resistance: ok read my twitter [15:21] Peter Newell claps for otak! [15:21] JueL Resistance: i'm out of my mind right now [15:21] Adri Saarinen applauds! [15:21] Slim Warrior: / ooh just imagine, sorting inventory offline:)))) [15:22] Adri Saarinen: Thank you otak! [15:22] Violet Hazlitt: *applauds* [15:22] Slim Warrior: /My handbag is a mess [15:22] Gigs Taggart: woo

Eddy Stryker: Libsecondlife Project

[15:22] Eddy Stryker: if i fall off the stage i blame it on my laptop, otakup0pe

convinced me to get a mac and i'm still learning the ropes ;)

[15:23] Adri Saarinen: haha, that bastard. ^^ [15:23] Peter Newell: heh [15:23] otakup0pe Neumann: ;) [15:23] Chel Pixie: haha

[15:23] Eddy Stryker: I'm Eddy Stryker in-world, John Hurliman out of world,

and lead developer of the libsecondlife project which bridges the two worlds. We're

approaching a year and a half of active development and the project has come a

long ways from reverse engineering the network protocol of Second Life.

[15:23] Adri Saarinen applauds!

[15:23] Eddy Stryker: We now have an open source client from Linden Labs, a self-

documenting protocol, and more open protocols and open source releases coming

from Linden Labs soon. It's a very friendly environment to be working on open

source code.

[15:23] JueL Resistance: OMG I LOOK LIKE A CARTOON [15:24] JueL Resistance: WTF [15:24] Lucian Halasy: cudos to itak to get eddy away from the evil grip of cheap pc hardware :p

Page 25: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:24] Eddy Stryker: The libsecondlife project is getting very close to becoming

feature complete for the current grid which seemed like an almost impossible task

when the project was first starting. The Second Life protocol is vast, complex, and

actually many smaller protocols used for different tasks. 2007 has seen a lot of effort

from Lindens to make sense of it though, and stabilize the networking layer while

making it robust at the same time.

[15:24] Chel Pixie: Jurl [15:24] Chel Pixie: I hate to tell you this [15:24] Chel Pixie: nah never mind [15:24] JueL Resistance is sorry for talking...

[15:24] Eddy Stryker: It's been a bumpy ride for application developers dealing

with a constantly changing protocol and API, but a few have stuck around since the

beginning and we've seen a surprisingly powerful micro-client named SLeek, grid

wide search engines, and many seemingly impossible services and features in Second

Life powered by libsecondlife under the hood.

[15:25] Eddy Stryker: The next big step for the project is to attract developers. We

want to stabilize our own libsecondlife API as much as possible, provide solid

documentation and useful example code, and make things as intuitive as possible for

new developers. In a metaverse where you can do anything, it only makes sense to

be able to combine that power with the rest of the web.

[15:25] Dually Goalpost: A-men! [15:26] DMC Zsigmond: Agreed

[15:26] Eddy Stryker: Speaking of combining with the web, another libsecondlife

project that has been getting a lot of attention is ajaxLife, a web-based SL client.

This is a perfect example of what we envisioned when the project was just starting.

That's my favorite part about open source, provide the means and brilliant people

will come along and do brilliant things. Sometimes the most important thing a

project can do is stay out of the way while people are innovating.

[15:28] Eddy Stryker: As the networking glue between Second Life and the rest of

the world, libsecondlife and the developers surrounding it are still working on the

perfect balance of providing power while staying out of the way of innovators, much

like Second Life strives to do for content creators

[15:29] Jeff McGuire: how are ya'll doing?

[15:29] Eddy Stryker: i think my avatar still has something to say, it is still typing...

[15:29] Adri Saarinen: Avs, minds of their own sometimes ;) [15:29] otakup0pe Neumann: heh. [15:30] otakup0pe Neumann: ghost in the machine and all that.

[15:30] Eddy Stryker: ah, there we go. thank you for giving all the open source

projects an audience here

[15:30] Adri Saarinen applauds! [15:30] Peter Newell claps [15:30] Menno Ophelia: woohoo [15:31] Violet Hazlitt: *applauds* [15:31] Discordia Zenovka: *applauds* [15:31] Adri Saarinen: And now we're happy to take questions during the last 30 minutes of dance time here :D

[15:31] otakup0pe Neumann: ooh afterparty. [15:31] Dreamy Rau: Will the transcripts to this be available at developer.amd.com?

[15:32] JueL Resistance: FAT BOY SLIM [15:32] Rhiannon Chatnoir: heading out all.. back to RFL for a bit [15:32] JueL Resistance: WOoOOOOOOOOT [15:32] Adri Saarinen: Thanks for coming, Rhi! [15:32] Peter Newell: Thanks for coming Rhi [15:32] Dreamy Rau: Where will the transcripts be available?

[15:33] Slim Warrior: / ooh yes we need FBS and SGF together! [15:33] Rhiannon Chatnoir: your welcome [15:33] Doubledown Tandino: it's slimgirlfats bipolar brother [15:33] Slim Warrior: hahaha [15:33] Haver Cole: hahaha [15:33] Haver Cole gets him meds [15:33] Menno Ophelia: wooohoo fatboy slim - warrior [15:33] Slim Warrior: well he is in london too;) [15:33] Slim Warrior: ahaha [15:33] Rhiannon Chatnoir: go see all the RFL builds if you guys havent before they come down in the next day or so [15:33] Rhiannon Chatnoir: take care all [15:33] Rhiannon Chatnoir: )))Ass Titties Ass N Titties((( [15:33] Rissa Maidstone: Thank you all, great program. [15:33] Discordia Zenovka: *discoballs over the dance floor* :) [15:33] Slim Warrior: Tc Rhiannon [15:33] Menno Ophelia: Nite nite

[15:33] Dually Goalpost: Hi Dreamy - I will post a link on the developer.amd.com

home page as soon as the trascripts are ready!

[15:33] Dreamy Rau: Great - thanks Dually [15:34] Troy McLuhan wonders if anyone here is making automated avatars (NPCs) for

SL

[15:34] Slim Warrior: Hvae agrea night everyone, will see you all soon

[15:34] Dually Goalpost: It will be listed under the "What's New" section :D

[15:34] Chel Pixie: love the lag :* [15:34] Adri Saarinen: Bots! [15:34] Dually Goalpost: Thank you Slim! [15:34] Adri Saarinen: Feel better soon, Slim! [15:34] Slim Warrior: byeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee [15:34] Chel Pixie: bye Slim

[15:34] Eddy Stryker: Troy: of all different sorts, yes

[15:34] Adri Saarinen: Troy, I know there are some ALICE-based bots [15:34] Discordia Zenovka: Thanks, Slim!

[15:34] otakup0pe Neumann: troy bots eh

[15:34] Menno Ophelia: bye bye slimmmmm [15:34] Adri Saarinen: If you're talking about for interaction [15:35] Troy McLuhan: Interaction yes

[15:35] Adri Saarinen: but bots run TONS of things in the background

Page 27: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:35] otakup0pe Neumann: troy there are many projects out there.

[15:35] otakup0pe Neumann: if you are looking for answer-bots or somethign - i'm

not sure if there are any turnkey solutions yet.

[15:36] Gigs Taggart: clients ask me a lot about NPC type bots

[15:36] Eddy Stryker: a lot goes in to making a truly autonomous bot, the

individual pieces are still being worked on until someone brings it all together.

pathfinding code, chat AI, SL-specific things such as animations

[15:36] Chel Pixie: LOL [15:36] Haver Cole: ♥ to everyone [15:36] Adri Saarinen: What's the best way for an individual or organization to find

libSL solutions?

[15:36] Gigs Taggart: there's a lot of .. expectation that an NPC style bot should be possible here easily. [15:36] Haver Cole: great freaking speakers! [15:36] Lucian Halasy is not a big supporter of bots

[15:36] otakup0pe Neumann: Adri call Pleiades ;)

[15:36] Lucian Halasy: sure, there are good things you can do with them but also bad things

[15:36] Adri Saarinen laughs. "Well, I'd say the same thing about MV."

[15:36] otakup0pe Neumann: But seriously take a look at libsecondlife.org. And

talk to developers on IRC.

[15:37] Dually Goalpost: We love AMD users! [15:37] Adri Saarinen: Lucian, there are good and bad things you can do with any technology [15:37] Dually Goalpost: haha, me first! [15:37] DMC Zsigmond: hahahah! lol nice [15:38] otakup0pe Neumann: The developers are mostly friendly. [15:38] JueL Resistance: afk a moment

[15:38] Eddy Stryker: if you aren't working under secrecy, on libsecondlife.org

there is a place where you can post what project you are working on and try and

recruit developers for contract work. if you are doing the development in-house and

just need some help with coding we are almost always around on IRC (EFNet #libsl

and #libsl-dev)

[15:38] Adri Saarinen: I'm not sure it's valuable to rule out an entire type of solution because of potential negative uses-- if we're going to do that, we all might as well unplug from the net before we get virii. [15:38] Eddy Stryker: and for those top secret projects, Pleiades is a good goto [15:38] otakup0pe Neumann: <3 [15:39] Dually Goalpost: I want to actually live in SL. Is that possible, yet? [15:39] Adri Saarinen laughs [15:39] Doubledown Tandino: i live in SL :O) [15:39] Doubledown Tandino: no, i really do [15:39] Adri Saarinen: We'll plug you in, Dually [15:39] Dually Goalpost: True VR [15:39] Dually Goalpost: haha [15:39] Chel Pixie: he really really does

Page 28: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:39] Mingan Munro: sad... [15:40] Chel Pixie: hahaha [15:40] Chel Pixie: <3 DD [15:40] Gigs Taggart: don't chew on foil.. eek [15:40] Troy McLuhan: The other day, someone new to SL walked up to me and asked if I'm a bot. They gave me what amounted to a Turing test. "Read that sign over there..." [15:41] otakup0pe Neumann: haha Troy. [15:41] Troy McLuhan: They seemed to expect NPCs in SL [15:41] Adri Saarinen: Troy, that's one of my FAVORITE questions from newbs. [15:41] Gigs Taggart: I'm actually a very sophiticated chatter bot. [15:41] otakup0pe Neumann: That ips awesome. [15:41] Adri Saarinen: It's so meta [15:41] otakup0pe Neumann: Gigs you can't fool me you are totally a markov chain. [15:41] Gigs Taggart: I can't take that title :P [15:41] Violet Hazlitt: I'd go along with it [15:41] Troy McLuhan: I'm not totally a markov chain in Hawaii [15:41] Adri Saarinen: I think people expect bots because NPCs are so standard in MMO games [15:42] Dually Goalpost: Shrek! [15:42] Violet Hazlitt: "Hello human, I am robot 24601" [15:42] Adri Saarinen: as ways of getting information, startup cash, etc [15:42] otakup0pe Neumann: "Can you please stand by the 1-prim sculptie stairs' [15:42] Doubledown Tandino: yeah, and im robot 420 (smirk, chuckle) [15:42] Adri Saarinen: I've always wanted to spend an afternoon in a welcome area with a big question mark prim over my head [15:42] Eddy Stryker: i have to run right now, thanks for having me here though it has been a pleasure [15:43] Adri Saarinen: Hello AVATAR, I seem to have lost my PLYWOOD CUBE, can you help me find my PLYWOOD CUBE? [15:43] Dually Goalpost: Thanks very much, Eddy! [15:43] Peter Newell: Thanks Eddy! [15:43] Adri Saarinen: Thanks for coming Eddy! [15:43] Eddy Stryker: take care all [15:43] otakup0pe Neumann: Take it easy Eddy ! [15:43] otakup0pe Neumann: See you in the future! [15:43] Violet Hazlitt: do you have cubes in your house? please go stand by the cubes. [15:43] Troy McLuhan: otaku - Maybe you could tell us an overview of your current EDU focused project? [15:44] otakup0pe Neumann: hmm ? [15:44] otakup0pe Neumann: Right now Troy ? [15:44] Violet Hazlitt: we would tell you but then we'd have to kill you [15:44] Adri Saarinen laughs [15:44] otakup0pe Neumann: =X [15:44] Troy McLuhan: Okay no prob [15:44] otakup0pe Neumann: Haha. [15:44] Adri Saarinen: Speaking of which, where's my NDA? :D

Page 29: AMD Summer Tech Mixerdeveloper.amd.com/wordpress/media/2012/10/amd_summer_mixer.… · [13:11] Rhiannon Chatnoir: hey there dutchy [13:11] Frans Charming: brining a newby i just met

[15:47] Peter Newell: Troy, there are some bounties posted on openmetaverse.org

[15:47] Troy McLuhan looks....

[15:48] Violet Hazlitt: you should all do our bounties first <_< [15:48] Violet Hazlitt: >_> [15:48] Gigs Taggart: I hereby put a 10L bounty on a plugin architecture for the client. [15:48] Chel Pixie: DD you rock [15:48] Gigs Taggart: 10 ENTIRE LINDEN DOLLARS [15:48] Dually Goalpost: I'll match that 10 and raise you 20! [15:48] Adri Saarinen: Gigs, I'll get RIGHT ON THAT [15:49] Chel Pixie: totally blow me away [15:49] otakup0pe Neumann: haha adri. [15:49] Violet Hazlitt: we usually pay bounties in real dollars... at least I think we do? [15:49] Violet Hazlitt: do we? [15:49] Adri Saarinen: We usually pay everything in real dollars, easier on our accounting. :D [15:49] Violet Hazlitt: there's an entire microeconomy in SL that we try to avoid, that's LL's business in a way, part of their "second life imagination" business model [15:50] Troy McLuhan: There are many orgs in the SciLands community that have a lot of interest in certain capabilities, but no developers - so they want to be able to fund bounties [15:50] Peter Newell: so if you could front half of that 2 cents, we'd appreciate it [15:50] otakup0pe Neumann: Depends on the bounty Violet.

[15:50] Adri Saarinen winces. "Oh. Documentation. That reminds me..." [15:50] Violet Hazlitt: as long as we don't infringe on LL's clientele, they fully support open sim and open clients [15:50] otakup0pe Neumann: *nod* [15:50] otakup0pe Neumann: Opensim is still a gray area. [15:51] Adri Saarinen: LL is also super supportive of 3rd party developers [15:51] Chel Pixie: *smooooocH* DD [15:51] Adri Saarinen: Like MV [15:51] Chel Pixie: Gotta poof a while [15:51] Violet Hazlitt: third party developpers for their own code ;) [15:51] Peter Newell: Thanks for coming Chel :D [15:51] Adri Saarinen: Well, we fall under 'content creators' too. :D [15:51] Adri Saarinen: LL has crowdsourcing down to an /art/ [15:53] otakup0pe Neumann: ok heading out now [15:53] otakup0pe Neumann: Thank you once again for the invite.
