KEY PROFESSIONAL DATES AND EXPERIENCES

After his degree in Naval and Mechanical Engineering in the University of Genova (Italy) in 1963,

Carlo Avanzini has been active in the field of land and marine pipelines, first in the field of oil P/Ls, then transferring his interests to civil pipelines.

From the early 70s, he has designed or has intervened as engineer and supervisor in a wide range of projects in different countries, with own Companies

or as free-lance consultant teaming with engineering companies or colleaguesHe brings as references projects in steel, HDPE, GRP in diameters up to 4000 mm.

International engineering support is given to HAWLE /NOVA SIRIA on the application of Steel Compression Couplings

and, in GCC, to PROCO (USA) on the DuckBill Valves for diffusers and coastal discharges

AVANZINI MIDDLE EAST FZE – SHARJAH, U.A.E.

The cooperation on international projects is in favor of engineering companies, material suppliers and contractors, and

includes design, preparation of specifications, construction method statements, planning and supervision.

One of the first documented project was the design and supervision of the outfall discharging pre-treated water from a paper factory in Silifke, Turkey Concrete Coated Steel 900mm x 900m (1985)

Numerous marine and outfall projects, easy or very engaging, successful or better forgotten are now past history, only

reminded in old faded out papers and photos

Locations, main data and photos of a few major projects in the last [25] years are shown in the next slides; others are collected in my CV.

by rubber flexible joints, bottom pull from the site through a cable return deviation block anchored on the bottom at 350m distance

ISTANBUL BALTALIMANI OUTFALL(1989)Steel, 2 x 1727,2.2mm, 300m long to -73m depth Twin pipes launched with short ramp in 2 sections joined by rubber flexible joints.Bottom pull from opposite side of Bosphorusat 1200m distance with a cable deviation block midway on the bottom at -75m depth.

Substitution of a section of the shore approach of the Marmara Gas Pipeline, damaged by the underwater slippage of a clay lens. The pressure of the landslide had buckled the pipe upwards and caused a severe leak. The project included the construction of the new string, the cut and removal of the damaged length, the bottom pull of the news string to the junction point, lifting of the two ends for the off-barge dry-welding of the sections .The pipe was kept in position for welding by two rotating clamps and supended for the alignment to two cranes and two davits and finally lowered in position.

The need of the substitution of the original diffuser with a new taered one to be connected to the main ND2500 GRP line required an intervention to be performed with a time-limited interruption of the plant. The connection was studied on paper and a combination of GRP short spools and of tailor-made Compression Couplings, designed with 400 mm axial tolerance and ± 3° allowable angular deflection been realized in 8 hrs, practically without idisturbanceto the TPP operation.

Page 15: AME OUTLINES

After thre years, the diffuser suffered extensive damages, causes [obviously!] unknown. The pipe brought was brought to land, cleaned and the components recovered as much as feasible.

AVANZINI MIDDLE EAST FZE – SHARJAH, U.A.E.

MERSIN GRP DIFFUSER REPAIR (2010)

It has been interesting to see that there have been a minimum fouling of the internal surfaces.Only local limpets groups vere present.

It was provided a new section with one port and the missing length was compensated with a long, specially designed steel compression coupling.

Design for the installation of the HDPE structural pipe ND 2000 3700 m longPipe and ballast blocks supplied by the Russian clientThe type of pipe and the blocks had been found not suitable for a safe sinking, but the client insisted nevertheless for the installation.

AVANZINI MIDDLE EAST FZE – SHARJAH, U.A.E.

SOCHI OUTFALL, RUSSIA (2012) [FIRST STAGE]

The project was stopped after the pipe failureThe pipe was tested in Germany and resulted not meeting the standards

Prefabrication and towing started to raise doubts on the pipe’s real strength, but the first string broke after the start of the installation of the ballast blocks

Page 21: AME OUTLINES

Ballast blocks and saddles, as well as the compete installation calculations and procedures were completely redesigned

The installation of line and diffuser was completedwithout problems.

SOCHI OUTFALL (RUSSIA) – RESTARTED IN 2013 WITH NEW DESIGN

First 2000 m of the outfall have been substituted by a tunnel. The remaining 1413 m were delivered as HDPE ND 2000 (extruded)
