Amendment Item I – December 21, 2017

Original Proposal: Proposal 2016-31

Original Committee Date: March 16, 2017

Original Name(s): Julia Dearriba-Montgomery, Michael Nuetzel, Liz Thomas, Charlie Phillips, and

Isaac Brown

IPM Name(s): Lori Cimino

Dean(s): Richard Greene

Course(s): DIG 3930 DIG 3930C

Program(s): Digital Media (S400) (B.A.S.)

This amendment serves to extend the inactivation term for the Special Topics (DIG 3930) course offered at 1

credit hour from summer term 2017 (2175) to summer term 2018 (2185). Furthermore, this amendment serves

to modify the implementation date of the replacement course Portfolio Development (DIG 3930C) offered at 3

credit hours from fall term 2017 (2178) to fall term 2018 (2188).

Through a collaboration among Dean of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Richard Greene and Instructional Program

Manager, Ms. Lori Cimino, it was determined that these modifications will better allow students who are

currently enrolled with an effective date prior to fall term 2017 (2178) the opportunity to complete the Digital

Media (S400) (B.A.S.) program as they originally enrolled.

Per the administrative directive of Dr. Richard Greene, modified outlines for the Special Topics (DIG 3930) and

Portfolio Development (DIG 3930C) courses are attached. Additionally, Curriculum Services will update all

other College systems.

12. Background (answer the following questions): • Is this a state requirement? No • What is the requirement and why must we implement it? N/A • Has history shown students need this course/program for some reason? Yes, these courses are part of the approved B.A.S. and A.S. in Digital Media curriculum. They are necessary in achieving a degree. • Will this meet some specific workforce, university transfer or student success need? Yes, it will meet student success needs, as it will allow for more flexibility in scheduling and a more natural progression of course material. • Are there partners, grant requirements, faculty collaborations or other reasons leading to the development of this

course/program? N/A • Please add any additional information to provide background for this submission. We are making these proposed changes after careful consideration and seeing the negative impacts certain aspects of classes and schedules have had in our A.S. to B.A.S. track as well as our A.A. to B.A.S. track. We want to provide students with a generalized curriculum at the A.S. level, introducing them to the Digital Media components. Therefore, we have created a core set of classes that equal 18 credit hours. We then want our B.A.S. courses to provide students with intermediate and advanced level classes in the Digital Media field. By making these changes, there will be a better progression between courses and degrees, and scheduling will also be more streamlined for students. In the long-term, this framework will allow for easier transitions as classes and mediums evolve in the ever-changing world of Digital Media.

17

13. Rationale/need for the above action(s). • Is there a need for this course/program in our service district? Yes, the Digital Media advisory committee in our local community, as well as overall growth of digital media jobs in Florida, indicates the need for this program. Media and marketing has risen extensively in Northeast Florida and will require a growing workforce. We also have witnessed robust enrollment in our program. • How will this impact student success for upper division instruction or job placement? These changes will successfully impact student success as they provide ease in scheduling and a more streamlined connection between lower division and upper division coursework. • If the College already has a similar course/program, why are we developing this program/course and what are the

differences between the programs and courses? N/A • How many students and what businesses or transfer institutions will benefit? Does this course/program support a College goal or initiative?

We have approximately 101 students in our B.A.S. program and 228 in our A.S. program. We do not have business partnerships and this does not directly transfer to another institution. These changes support College goals one (Prepare students for distinctive success in their academic, career and personal goals through collaboration within the College community and individual initiative) and three (Optimize access to College programs and services). • Please add any additional information to provide rationale for this submission. Currently our A.S. program is very media specific, offering a large amount of varying classes that make it very difficult to schedule. In many cases, we have had to re-teach certain areas at the advanced level because of the amount of media specific courses in the A.S. level. As we have moved into our B.A.S. program, we have seen the problems with this set-up, and want to provide students with a more streamline curriculum. Instead, we are proposing a curriculum that would provide introductory level courses at the A.S. level, and intermediate and advanced level courses at the B.A.S. level. We also want students to have the option of choosing a concentration in their advanced studies, and this curriculum proposal provides the framework for this. In addition, many of our current course selections carry names that are either irrelevant or not clear for students to comprehend the class offerings. Therefore, we are making an effort to provide classes with clear and concise naming conventions which will allow for a better understanding of the intended topic. Additionally, due to State Course Numbering System (SCNS) requirements, courses that have been identified as having both a lecture and lab component have been modified to add the “C” suffix. Systematically the “C” suffix will be added via a number change job request so that course history will remain intact and past or current students’ transcripts will list the most current course number.

Digital Media/Multimedia Technology (2152) (A.S.)

Associate in Science

The growth of the media production and entertainment industry in Florida has increased the demand for

experienced multimedia production professionals in private industry, public service and education. The Digital

Media/Multimedia Technologies program provides a unique, interdisciplinary program in which you will learn

to integrate graphics, sound, video, animation, text, and still images in preparation for jobs and careers in

media-related industries.

The Associate in Science degree in Digital Media directly matriculates to the Bachelor of Applied Science in

Digital Media in which, students can apply to upon completion of the degree. There are four two technical

certificates available within this degree program: Digital Media/Multimedia Video Production (6400) (T.C.),

Graphic Design Production (6401) (T.C.) and Digital Media/Multimedia Production (6402) (T.C.) and Digital

Media/Multimedia Production (Motion Graphics/3-D) (6403) (T.C.). Students may choose to pursue a technical

certificate while completing the requirements for the A.S. degree, or pursue one or more certificate programs to

develop or upgrade their skills in a particular field. Contact an advisor or counselor to determine the career

education path that is best for you.

Please note that by being enrolled in Digital Media/Multimedia Technology (2152) (A.S.) you may

automatically meet the requirements for one of the aforementioned technical certificates. If you meet the

requirements for a technical certificate, as a result of being enrolled in Digital Media/Multimedia Technology

(2152) (A.S.), you may automatically be awarded the technical certificate(s) upon meeting their requirements as

well. If you choose to opt out of this automatic awarding of a technical certificate, please contact an advisor to

do so.

A minimum grade of “C” or better must be achieved in all professional core courses.

The Program

The Digital Media/Multimedia Technology program prepares students for multimedia based design and

development positions in corporations, firms, or self-employment as a multimedia developer. An internship

experience is required with this degree to provide students an opportunity to gain work experience.

Mission/Purpose

Through providing applied instruction with industry standard technology, the Digital Media Arts department

prepares students for employment in a global economy for digital production jobs and entrepreneurial

opportunities, while maintaining a continuous connection with industry and maintaining the concentration on

the design values, aesthetics and portfolio development.

Career Opportunities

Employment in Digital Media Production is expected to grow faster than average throughout 2014, and job

opportunities should be especially good for Graphic Designers, Web Designers and Video Production in

Page 24: Amendment Item I December 21, 2017curriculum.fscj.edu/proposals/2017-18/2016-31_Amend_01.pdf · 2018-04-04 · 4 Florida State College at Jacksonville Course Learning Outcomes and

24

particular. The Internet business community will continue to provide work for those interested in web design,

and opportunities will grow as all businesses emphasize digital media. There will be strong demand for both

freelance and salaried workers in graphic design, web design, motion graphics and video production.

Besides artistic ability and creativity, Digital Media Production jobs are usually required to have some formal

training. A portfolio (a collection of samples of work) is also a required tool when looking for a job. Work done

while attending school and on internship can be used in a portfolio. Graduates in their first jobs should expect

to start working in entry-level opportunities however, as they progress they will receive more advanced

responsibility and assignments. Experienced workers can advance to art director, design director, editor,

producer or go out on their own as freelancers and business owners.

Apple Macintosh computer labs are provided with all the current industry software applications and computer

peripherals for use in the instructional component of the Digital Media program. Many students choose to

purchase an Apple Macintosh computer or related personal computer to work on outside assignments

independently from class and scheduled labs.

29

Note: Students are cautioned to pay particular attention to the following statements.

1. A student’s graduation date will be the date of the end of the College term in which the student has fulfilled all academic requirements. (The removal of an incomplete grade does not affect students’ graduation dates, since the grade change is effective at the end of the term in which the incomplete grade was assigned rather than the term in which the incomplete work was made up.)

2. Students who enter under the (2016/2017) catalog will be assigned to the degree or certificate requirements in effect during the 2016/2017 academic year. The student’s assigned catalog year will remain in effect as long as the student maintains continuous enrollment. Changes to requirements as mandated by law or by rule of the District Board of Trustees may supersede this provision.

3. Many courses in this catalog have prerequisite requirements and/or co-requisite courses listed in the course descriptions. Students are advised to be guided by these requirements.

4. Students who place into developmental education courses are required to complete designated developmental education courses with a grade of “C” or better regardless of program of study.

Articulation

This certificate articulates directly into the Digital Media/Multimedia Technology (2152) (A.S.) degree.

Students may pursue one or more certificates to develop or upgrade their skills in a particular field, or pursue

the A.S. degree and earn technical certificates while completing the requirements for the degree. Contact an

advisor or counselor to determine the career education path that is best for you.

In order to be awarded a technical certificate, students must have met the following requirements.

1. Fulfill all academic requirements for the chosen program of study as outlined in the Florida State College at Jacksonville catalog and curriculum.

2. Earn minimum prescribed semester hours for the chosen program of study with a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 (“C”) on a 4.0 scale on all courses that apply to the chosen program of study.

3. Complete a minimum of 25 percent of the total hours required for the program in residence at Florida State College at Jacksonville. Credit by examination and credit by portfolio development do not count toward this residency requirement.

31

4. Fulfill all obligations, financial or otherwise, to the College before they may graduate.

Gainful Employment

This is a gainful employment program. Visit the Gainful Employment page for gainful employment programs’

placement and on-time completion rates, median loan amounts, SOC codes and estimated program costs.

Gainful employment programs include only training programs of at least one academic year that lead to a

certificate and credentialed non-degree programs (credit programs requiring 30 or fewer credit hours and clock

hour programs requiring 600 or more contact hours). These programs prepare students for gainful employment

in a recognized occupation.
