waterfalls.

The sight is at the

end of the path...

To get to the Menta dam: from Gambarie,follow the SS183 for 2 kms direction Reggio Calabria,then turn to the left at first crossroads, directionMontalto. After about 4 kms turn to the right at thecrossroads and follow the Menta dam sign. Oncereaching the dam, follow the sloping hairpin bends asfar as the end of the asphalted road.

Cross the stream and follow the red and whitesigned path on the right. Go down through the paththat crosses some Pine and Beech groves.

Half way, at the natural viewpoint, you canenjoy a spectacular sight of the waterfalls.

When you get to the stream, go up throughthe river-bed for about 10 min. following thesigns. Be careful not to slide on the wet rocks.Once you arrive you can swim in the emeraldgreen natural pool...

For the return, follow the same path youtook on the way.4

Recommendation:Be careful to not to slipper when you go up the river bed again and do not risk to climb therocks of the waterfall.

What to see:The Menta dam (1.370 m)that regulates thehomonymous strean.

Vegetation:Pines, beech, Sanbucineorchids (yellow and violet), papilionataeorchids, euphorbias,brooms...

A ring path around the highestAspromonte pointfrom which you can admire the Etna and theEolie islands...

To get to the basis of Montalto: fromGambarie, follow the SS183 for 2 km ReggioCalabria direction, turn to the left then at the firstcrossroads direction Montalto. After about 15 km(the asphalt in some places is not in excellent condi-tions), just before getting to the base of Montalto,one crosses a roads that turns to the left (San LucaPolsi direction). Park in front of the crossroads andgo towards the fence.

After passing the fence there is no signof the beginning of the path; you have to dothe best you can... It is necessary to go dia-gonally towards the right, as if you are follo-wing for some metres the hand of a clock thatshows 12h05. It is there that the excursion begins. Whenyou reach a grove of young Beeches it will benecessary to gradually change the directiongoing down slightly towards the left. Soon a bit better traced a path will appearand you will reach a spring called Pantani diMontalto.Keep going for about 10 min. you will get to agrazing; once crossed it and going straight-forward you will reach a small viewpoint.Looking down you can see the continuation ofthe path going down on the left.Take then the ridge and go down as far asreaching the dirt track that passes in front ofthe rangers forest barracks, called shelterGiardini (reference forestale on the map). It isimportant to find the track because the shel-ter is only the point of reference.

Once you find the track follow it on theleft. About 20 min. later you will reach a smalltrough beside which there is a spring and apicnic area.

About 30 min. later walking you will haveto leave the track and to take a bend the3

Length:1h20 on descent as far as the forest rangers shelter, 2h40 on slope as far as the top and 20 min. on descent to reach the car.

System of signs:Totally inexsistent on the first part of the path,then red-white-red on the slope to Montalto.

Drinking water:Small spring just after the departure but it is hard to fill the flask;fountain just before starting the slope.

Recommendation:To have a strong sense of orientation.

15 min. later: be careful because youhave to leave the main path and come backto the left following the red-white-red hardlyvisible system of signs. Go up following theslope as far as reaching the old barbed wirefencing.Keep on going beside the fencing until get-ting to a viewpoint where you can admireboth the Ionian sea (on the right) and theThyrrenian sea(on the left). Keep going upas far as the top marked out by the statue ofthe Redeemer.

To return, go down again for about 20 min.to the opposite side through an arranged path(wood banister).

Once you get to the ashalted road followit on the left to find your car located a fewmetres away.

An excursionthrough the undergrowths,in a very damp universe, thick with ferns, muskand lianas...

To get to the viewpoint: from Taurianova takethe SS 111 Oppido Mamertina or Molòchio direc-tion. Just after crossing a stream called Marro,follow the Molòchio-Trepitò direction. Once overMolòchio keep the Trepitò direction. The viewpointis on one of the last bends, before reaching thevillage: 812 m. above sea level (see the map).

Take the path that is on the left of theviewpoint and go down as far as the stream.

Just a few metres before the stream, youwill see a big rock (picture) that shows, withtwo arrows, the two paths that lead to thewaterfalls.The one on the right, (crossing thestream and turning at once to the left) leadsto the Galasia waterfall, the one on the left(without crossing the stream at the Munduwaterfall).

It is advisable to start with the one on theright that is longer.

Departure/Arrival:The viewpoint which is in one of the sharpbends. Possibility to park within the bend.

Drop: About 500 m.

Length:1 hour from the car park to the Galasia waterfall;1 hour for the return to the rock. 20 min. fromthe rock to reach the Mundu waterfall and 40 min. for the return as far as the car park.Particularity: the going is on descent and thereturn is uphill !

System of signs:Red-white-red.

Map: 1:25 000,n. 590, Platì section.

Drinking water:Waterfalls.

Recommendations:It is advisable not to stand too long at the Mundu waterfallbecause of the risk of landslide.

Suggested periods:From June to November. ///

After the slope, in a small level part inthe grove there are three different possiblepaths. Take the one in the centre that goesdown.

For the return, once you reach the water-fall, take the same path as far as the big rockand go towards the Mundu waterfall.

From there take again the path as far asreaching the rock and keep going up usingthe same path you took on the way.
