The Power of Sankofa
Sankofa is an African word from the Akan tribe in Ghana (Gold Coast).
The literal translation of the word and the symbol is “it is not taboo to
fetch what is at risk of being left behind.”
The word is derived from the
SAN (return), KO (go), FA (look, to claim, seek and take).
The symbol — shown above — is based on a mythical bird with its feet firmly planted
forward with its head turned backwards. Thus, the Akan believe the past serves as a guide
for planning the future. To the Akan, it is this wisdom in learning from the past which
ensures a strong future.
The pilgrimage of Sankofa is created to allow the African people in diaspora a place which
they can claim their heritage and journey to the motherland, Africa. The pilgrimage will enable
Africans from the diaspora to take part in a trip that has a moral and/or spiritual significance for
them. The journey will include visiting the Wall of Remembrance, entering the Doors of
Return, much more ceremonial events. It can also represent a metaphorical journey into one's
own beliefs. Many of the places identified have a spiritual importance attached for the African
people in the diaspora and can transform one’s life forever. A spiritual awakening of their
connection to the motherland will allow Africans from the diaspora to reconnect with their
ancestral roots.
AAU anticipates that this pilgrimage will embody a new beginning for Africans from the
diaspora to continually find homage within themselves, for their fellow African brother and
sister, and become the start of a new era of UNITY.
1. It has been written - “Know for certain that for four hundred years your descendants will
be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved and mistreated
there. But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out
with great possessions. In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here
(home)”. This saying is a prophetic word for the African people in diaspora. The year
The first slave ship left the coast of Gold Coast (Ghana) and arrived at the coast of
Jamestown, Virginia, USA in the year 1619. In the year 2019 will be 400 years the first
slaves from coast of Gold Coast (Ghana) arrived at the coast of Jamestown, Virginia,
USA.
2. To all African people in diaspora, the pilgrimage of Sankofa has been established to
encourage us to take the first step to know our roots or heritage. As Jews have Jerusalem
and the Dead Sea, Moslems have Mecca and Medina, African people in diaspora have the
Pilgrimage of Sankofa (a journey back to our ancestral land) i.e. Cape Coast, Elmina and
3
Assin Manso in Ghana.
3. Cape Coast and Elmina in Ghana then Gold Coast harbor some of the slave caves in
which the slave masters called Castles and Forts with the “DOORS OF NO RETURN
have become the “DOORS OF RETURN” for Africans of the diaspora to reclaim their
heritage. Assin Manso has the river of the Last Bath for slaves and the WALL of
RETURN
4. The pilgrimage of Sankofa allows an African in diaspora to take the same journey his or
her ancestors took and return to the motherland, by going through the same doors and
dipping themselves in the same river they had their last bath before they were shipped to
unknown lands.
