What’s New at the 2014 Summit? Our goal is to enhance the Summit every year, while still keeping the core of the meeting and our mission in tact. Below we have highlighted some of the ideas from the program committee. We hope you like the additions, and are looking forward to seeing and hearing your reactions:

Instant Recess®

To quote the late Toni Yancey, innovator and creator of Instant Recess®, “Instant Recess® can work equally well in the corporate boardroom, school classroom or for fans at a sporting event.” So, we thought: why not build this into our programming at the Summit? We are “walking the talk” by providing brief stretching and movement breaks during sessions. We know everyone is eager to learn all the great details through lectures — we just want to shake it up a bit and get your blood moving. Then after April, take these ideas home from the meeting and make them a part of YOUR life.

‘GO’-Global Opinions! These new mini sessions will include inspirations, thought provoking feedback, and new visions from fitness enthusiasts around the world. Learn different viewpoints, hear short interviews, and voice your opinion about everything from fitness to nutrition to the world’s health at large. These daily sessions are sure to spark conversation and buzz, so don’t miss out. Check the onsite schedule for times. Expand Your Mind. GO.

Fitness Challenge, Olympic-StyleJoin fellow attendees in Olympic park for the first ever competition of the fittest. You can sign up on site to be on a team. Summit faculty will serve as team captains, who will motivate and champion you to victory. Come and get to know your fellow summit attendees!

Minute to Win ItAs an added attraction to the Exhibit Hall, participating exhibitors challenge attendees to perform a range of different exercises. For one minute, attendees will do a drill. Practice your jumping jacks and push ups! Attendees can sign up at the participating booths to learn the exercise du jour and the date/time of the challenges. Prizes will be awarded to the winners!

Social Media & Technology — New Track for 2014!Facebook, Twitter, Instagram… the list goes on. Presenters will share tools that are trending in the technology and social media arenas to help you stay current in the field. Integrating new tools into your current repertoire can: improve client relationships, build worldwide networks and bring communication to a whole new level.

Can Broccoli Make You Beautiful?Leslie Bonci

Our skin is as important an organ as the rest of the body. Daily care through food choices as well as eliminating skin stressors may help us to age better outside as well as inside. Antioxidants, essential fatty acids, adequate hydration, and phytonutrients should be part of your daily eating regime to nourish your skin from within.

Too Much Sitting: How Does It Affect Appetite and Weight?Barry Braun

The purpose of this talk is to help participants better understand the relationships between energy intake and expenditure, and to clarify the role for hunger and satiety hormones in regulating appetite and energy intake. Barry will

present the state of research on short- and long-term effects of changing physical activity with particular emphasis on how too much sedentary behavior (sitting) impacts regulation of appetite and weight management.

Obesity is a Disease: Panel DiscussionMichele Olson, Mike Bracko, Kara Mohr, Greg Heath, Mike Spezzano, Walter Bortz

The American Medical Association sparked headlines in 2013 when it voted to officially classify obesity as a disease. Since diet, activity, and health are at the forefront of our daily lives, this is the perfect time to get all of the attendees involved in putting minds together to discuss this issue. Please join us for a truly hot topic panel discussion and come prepared with your questions, concerns, and breakthroughs to share with your fellow colleagues.

Opening Keynote Lecture: Tuesday, April 1, 5:45 p.m.

Fired Up: Sled Dog Wisdom on Motivating a Laughable Range of Personalities

Keynote Lecture: Wednesday, April 2, 8:15 a.m.

It’s Always too Soon to StopWalter Bortz, M.D., ACSM Member Emeritus

Fitness for the young is an option. Fitness for the old is an imperative. As we age, (we all do), frailty looms. “Survival of the fittest” is not an archival whimsy, it is an every day reality. Aging is plastic. Stay whole.

Keynote Lecture: Thursday, April 3, 8:15 a.m.

10,000 Workouts in 10 Minutes: Movement-Based ProgrammingDixie Stanforth, Matt King

The world of function and fascia emphasizes training movement, not muscles. Many fitness professionals understand “why” purposeful, multiplanar movement matters — they just don’t “how” to set it up, and default to traditional workouts. If you’re ready to move beyond bi’s and tri’s or upper/lower body splits, this precon will give you the tools to develop functional workouts for both general and select populations. You will learn how to take your available training modalities and plug into a simple template that will make playing with movement-based programming one of your most powerful training tools. Whether you are just starting your career or wanting to discover how to create programs that endlessly evolve into new functional variations, this precon is for you.

Worksite Health Promotion 2014: U.S. and Multinational Next Practices for Program Success!Robert Karch, Charles B. Estey, Jason Lang

There is widespread agreement that the Affordable Care Act will incent employers to pursue a comprehensive worksite health promotion strategy driving high levels of engagement and demonstrated health outcomes. The U.S. Health and Human Services has defined a comprehensive worksite health promotion program as having five components: (1) health education; (2) supportive social and physical environment; (3) integration; (4) linkage to related programs; and (5) worksite screening.

This preconference presented by the International Association for Worksite Health Promotion (IAWHP) will provide insights, tools, and resources to help new and seasoned professionals design and implement WHP programs in a diverse and/or global worksite. IAWHP is an affiliate society of ACSM with the mission to advance the global community of worksite health promotion practitioners.

Session Objectives:

• Outline the rational and documented program impact for worksite health promotion

• To provide an overview of the Worksite Health Promotion Program “next practices” for program start-up and mature programs — driving program impact and outcomes

• To share tools and resources from the IAWHP to enable attendees a post-conference support system

• To outline and discuss strategies for working with a diverse/global worksite

• To explore

Post-Rehab: New Opportunities in Fitness TrainingPhil Page, Alanna Williams, Andre Labbe

As declining reimbursements and changing healthcare are leading to early discharge of patients from therapy, fitness and wellness professionals will be encountering clients that may be discharged from therapy before they are completely healed. In addition, personal trainers will be faced with more clients with co-morbidities such as diabetes and arthritis as the population ages.

It’s important that fitness professionals and therapists understand the important role they play in the post-rehabilitation environment. By establishing a framework, the post-rehabilitation “team” can provide the best management of the patient/client through good communication. Post-rehabilitation clients including post-operative orthopedic patients, athletes returning to sport, and those with chronic diseases have specific precautions and needs unique to their condition. Proper assessment, exercise prescription and progression, and communication are key. Personal trainers need to understand the common problems and limitations with post-rehabilitation clients to ensure safety and maximize outcomes.
