Biographical HistoryTom Raymond, the official photographer for the International Storytelling Festival from1980-2009, began working with the International Storytelling Center, formerly known as theNational Association for the Preservation and Perpetuation of Storytelling (NAPPS), beginning in


circa 1980. In 1983, Raymond established Fresh Air Photo, a commercial photography and postproduction studio based in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Raymond first pursued a medical career. He earned a B.S. at the University of Tennessee inKnoxville. He later obtained his M.S. at East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina,and a Ph.D. in biological science at the Bowman Gary School of Medicine at Wake ForestUniversity in Winston-Salem. Three postdoctoral positions followed at the University of Iowa, theUniversity of Oregon Health Sciences Center, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In1978, Raymond joined the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine at East TennesseeState University.

Raymond's career in photography began as an undergraduate at the University of Tennessee(UT) while he was working for The Daily Beacon, a student publication. He earned severalawards for photojournalism while at UT, but photography was put on hold while he pursued acareer in academic medicine. Having published more than 60 peer-reviewed articles in scientificjournals and presented his research at meetings throughout the United States and abroad, heresigned from UT in 1987 to pursue photography full-time as the owner of Fresh Air Photo.

Scope and ContentThe Tom Raymond Collection documents the performances of international and nationalstorytellers at the International Storytelling Festival in Jonesborough, Tennessee. The collectionprimarily consists of graphic images which span 20 years, 1983-2003. Raymond's photographs ofInternational storyteling performances prior to 1983 are found in the International StorytellingCollection (AFC 2001/008).

The bulk of the collection contains color slides, but also includes negatives, color reversal film,contact sheets and photographic prints. The images mainly capture the on-stage performances ofthe featured tellers but also capture the storytellers on the grounds of the festival as well aspublicity photographs of storytellers.

Of note in the collection are Raymond’s 1500 photos of Appalachian storyteller Ray Hicks fromBeech Mountain, North Carolina. Also in the collection is Raymond's documentation of Hicks'Home Going Service when he passed away in 2003.
