SUMMER

5 Things About:Butterflies

• Butterflies canbe foundfluttering aroundevery continentexceptAntarctica.

• The insects feedon nectar andpollen fromflowers.

• They taste withtheir feet—that’swhere their tastereceptors arelocated.

• A butterfly’s twoeyes have 6,000lenses each.

• Their wings areactuallytransparent andcovered withthousands oftiny scales. Lightreflecting off thescales createsthe colors andpatterns we see.

Go for the GoldEvery four years, all around the

world, people enjoy watching theSummer Olympic Games.

The first modern Olympic Games in1896 featured nine sports: athletics(track and field), cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weightlifting and wrestling. Allnine will be part of this summer’s event. From 1900 to 1992, the games oftenincluded “demonstration sports.” Thesewere usually sports specific to the hostcountry, such as American football inthe United States or a wrestlingcompetition called glima in Sweden.Eventually, the number of regular eventsbecame so high that the tradition ofincluding demonstration sports wassuspended.

Becoming the host city for theOlympic Games involves a long processand carries benefits and challenges. After a site is chosen, the city has sevenyears to prepare for the event. Hostingthe games can be healthy for a city’seconomy and bring the area prestige.Preparing for the games usuallyinvolves improving a city’s infrastructureand constructing venues that can beenjoyed by residents after the gamesare over.

Women LendingTheir Wings

With World War II raging overseas, the military’s high demand for malecombat pilots prompted the U.S.Army Air Forces to enlist the skills ofa civilian group of aviators: women.

In September 1942, twoprograms—the Women’s AuxiliaryFerrying Squadron, led by NancyHarkness Love, and the Women’sFlying Training Detachment, led byJacqueline Cochran—were formed. On Aug. 5, 1943, they merged intothe Women Airforce Service Pilots,or WASP.

Initially, the primary job ofWASPs was to transport militaryaircraft from factories, but they alsoserved as flight instructors and testpilots, and towed targets for liveammunition gunnery practice.

WASPs were the first women inhistory to fly U.S. military aircraftand piloted nearly every type ofplane, from light trainers to B-26and B-29 bombers. In total, theprogram graduated 1,074 women.

Because of its urgent need,WASP was implemented as a civilservice program, with the intent ofgranting it military status at a latertime. However, the need for pilotsdwindled, and the program endedDec. 20, 1944.

WASP received formal militaryrecognition in 1977, shortly afterthe U.S. military began admittingwomen as pilots. In 2010, thesurviving WASPs were awardedthe Congressional Gold Medal.

It’s that time again!

captivated audiences for decades, first in books, then radio and movies, and later on television. Saddle up for alook at some popular TV Westernsof yesteryear.

“Hopalong Cassidy.” It was 1949when Hopalong Cassidy rode in fromthe big screen and became the star ofTV’s first Western series, as well as apop culture phenomenon. AlthoughHoppy dressed in black, he was agood guy, along with his trusty whitehorse, Topper.

“Death Valley Days.” This radioshow became a TV series in 1952 andwas unique because it featured storiesbased on actual events from Old Westdays in Death Valley, Calif. Itsepisodes were introduced by hosts, which included Stanley Andrews (theOld Ranger) and Ronald Reagan.

“Gunsmoke.” For two decadesbeginning in 1955, viewers of thisfrontier drama tuned in to follow thelives of Dodge City, Kan., MarshalMatt Dillon, his deputy, Festus, andtownsfolk Doc and Miss Kitty.“Gunsmoke” is often the mostcelebrated of the TV Western genre.
