We’re Always Upto Something!

The Scoop on NachosCrispy tortilla chips, warm cheese

sauce and spicy jalapeno peppers arethe ingredients for nachos, a popularsnack on menus almost everywhere. But the sports stadium is where thisfood staple first scored big withAmerican fans.

The basic dish was created in1943 by Ignacio Anaya—who wasnicknamed Nacho—the headwaiterat a restaurant in the Mexican bordertown of Piedras Negras. Nachosthen became a popular offering inTexas eateries.

About 30 years later, it wasconcession operator Frank Libertowho transformed nachos into sportsfare. He created the ready-madecheese sauce that could be easilywarmed up and poured over chips.Liberto sold his quick and portableversion of nachos from carts at TexasRangers’ Arlington Stadium, wherethey were a huge hit.

By 1977, nachos were being sold atDallas Cowboys games at TexasStadium. At one game, “Monday NightFootball” announcer Howard Cosellwas served the cheesy chips andenjoyed them so much, he used theword nacho to describe good playsfor the rest of the broadcast and forweeks after. This national exposure issaid to have made nachos thehousehold name they are today.

Remember Me?

Mention thecharacter CountDracula, and moviefans will likely pictureBela Lugosi.

He was bornBela Blasko onOct. 20, 1882, inLugos, Hungary(now Romania).

As a teen, hestudied at an actingacademy inBudapest, thenjoined the HungarianNational Theatre.

He immigrated tothe U.S. in 1921.

He made hisU.S. stage debut in1922, but because hedidn’t speak Englishwell, he learned hislines phonetically.

Lugosi gainednational acclaim forhis portrayal ofnovelist BramStoker’s vampirecount in “Dracula.”He starred inthe Broadwayproduction, thenthe 1931 film. Bothhandsome andsinister, with hisfitting accent, his performancehas become thetimeless standard forthe character.
