95 Years ofReader’s Digest
Information overload mayseem like a modern-day issue, but it was nearly 100 years agowhen DeWitt Wallace recognizedthe need for a monthlypublication that summarizedtimely, interesting news storiesfor the everyday American. InFebruary 1922, Wallace and hiswife, Lila, published the firstissue of Reader’s Digest.
Unlike others at the time, the magazine was pocket- andpurse-sized and offered adifferent article for each day ofthe month, originated from otherperiodicals and condensed byWallace himself. He said hechose material that was usefuland of lasting value, with broadappeal and a positive message.
Reader’s Digest was animmediate success. Initially, the magazine was only availableby mail and didn’t includeadvertisements. It was sold atnewsstands for the first time in1929, and soon after, thepublication began includingoriginal content and readers’submissions. By 1939, it had acirculation of 3 million.
Wallace’s commitment to hisreaders and the magazine’sfocus on human interest storiesand practical advice helpedmake Reader’s Digest popularnot just in the U.S., but alsoaround the world. Today, editions are printed in morethan a dozen languages in70 countries.

Counting Birds for a CauseEvery February, nature lovers
across the globe have the chanceto help out scientists byparticipating in the Great BackyardBird Count.
Created in 1998 by the CornellLab of Ornithology and the NationalAudubon Society, the projectcollects real-time data on wild birdspecies over four days. You don’thave to be a bird-watching expertto take part—in fact, Audubonscientists recommend the projectas a fun and worthwhile way tointroduce yourself or someone elseto birding.
After creating a free account atGBBC.BirdCount.org, simply tallythe numbers and kinds of birds yousee for at least 15 minutes on oneor more days of the count andsubmit the results. Experts suggestfamiliarizing yourself with the keybird identification categories—sizeand shape, color pattern, behavior, and habitat—and consulting a field
guide specific to birds in your region. In addition to tallying species, the
bird count also helps researchersstudy climate change, avian diseasesand other factors that can affect birdpopulations and migration patterns.
In the past, more than160,000 people from over130 countries have participated andidentified nearly 5,700 kinds of birds.
This year’s Great Backyard BirdCount takes place Feb. 17–20.

The Human HeartNot only is the heart a familiar
symbol of Valentine’s Day, but it’salso the focus of another Februaryobservance: American Heart Month.Celebrate this incredible organ withthese facts:
• Every day, the heart beatsaround 100,000 times.During the average person’slifespan, the heart may beat3 billion times.
• A healthy adult heart beats60 to 100 times a minute at rest.Well-trained athletes usuallyhave a slower resting heart rate.
• In most people, the heart islocated in the center of thechest, between the lungs, withthe largest part of the organtilting toward the left. The leftlung is smaller than the rightlung to allow room forthe heart.
• Make two fists and hold themtogether. This is roughly thesize of your heart.
• The average heart weighsbetween 8 and 10 ounces,or about the same weight asan apple.
• A man’s heart is about25 percent larger than awoman’s and can pump moreblood in a single beat. Femalehearts make up for theirsmaller size by beating faster,by about 8 beats per minute.
• The heart does the mostphysical work of any muscleduring a lifetime, pumping1.5 gallons of bloodevery minute.

Remembering Iwo JimaThe image of six U.S. Marines
raising the American flag on Iwo Jimais one of history’s most famousphotographs, having “recorded thesoul of a nation,” as it was laterdescribed. Every year on Feb. 23, IwoJima Day is observed to honor thatdefining moment and the brave menwho fought in the World War II battle.
Located about halfway betweenJapan and the Mariana Islands, thetiny island of Iwo Jima was needed asa strategic landing site for AmericanB-29 bombers. Beginning Feb. 19,1945, three Marine divisions totaling70,000 men battled 21,000 Japanesetroops who were entrenched in asophisticated underground network ofcaves and tunnels.
On March 26, the U.S. declared theisland secure after five weeks offighting. During that time, nearly7,000 Americans were killed and20,000 wounded, with 27 menawarded the Medal of Honor, thecountry’s highest military awardfor bravery.
The enduring image of theflag-raising on Mount Suribachi, captured by press photographerJoe Rosenthal, is immortalized as asculpture at the U.S. Marine CorpsWar Memorial outside ArlingtonNational Cemetery.
