ON COURSE...The American Academy of Optometry and its Foundation enjoyed another banner year. The record-breaking Annual Meeting in San Francisco was also the Foundation’s most successful meeting ever, raising over $190,000 to support research and education. Donations made through registration started a very positive trend. The philanthropy continued at the AOF exhibit hall booth where over $95,000 from donors was augmented by a $25,000 match from Essilor of America. Thirty-eight lecturers redirected their honoraria to the Foundation. This along with an annual contribution commitment from the Academy Board for Continuing Education dollars provided an additional $27,500. The Foundation Celebration Luncheon was attended by 280 supporters and the silent auction raised over $10,000. The Foundation also received a couple of impressive lead gifts, described on the following pages.
This Annual Report further demonstrates the financial health of your Foundation: $3.5 million in assets and $400,000 awarded in fellowships, scholarships and grants in 2010. Furthermore, thanks to the continued support of the Academy Board, the Foundation’s expenses are extremely low. Thus your donations support the future of optometry rather than administrative costs.
The year saw a few milestones for the Foundation. We awarded the first Michael G. Harris Ezell Fellowship supporting an optometrist pursuing graduate work in education, public policy, public health, or related areas. The first Mike Daley Ezell Fellowship was awarded and the Foundation now has seven endowed Ezell Fellowships in its portfolio. The Foundation introduced thirteen more Ezell Fellows and welcomed the fourth annual class of Carl Zeiss Vision Fellows and in all, the Foundation provided over 50 travel fellowships to the Annual Meeting.
Your Foundation continues to receive outstanding support from both individual and corporate donors and we invite everyone to enjoy this report. The AOF is the Academy’s Foundation and we can all take great pride in its growth, the outstanding talent we support, and the achievements of those in whom we have invested. Enjoy the photographs of Academy friends and learn more about the Foundation’s growing portfolio of programs. Finally, we invite you all to invest further in the future of optometry. We would love to celebrate you joining the Presidents Circle in Boston this October.

CATHERINE AMOS TAKES LEADERSHIP POSITIONCatherine S. Amos, OD, FAAO, is the new President of the American Optometric Foundation, succeeding outgoing academic leader Dr. Tony Adams, who completed his term in November. A well respected private practitioner in the community of Hoover, Alabama, Dr. Amos received her OD from the School of Optometry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, was President of her state association as well as Chair of the Board of Directors for Vision Service Plan and has served on the AOF Board of Directors since 2007. Dr. Amos’ diverse experience and business acumen will bring balanced and insightful leadership to the Foundation over the next two years.
BSK ENTERS INTO PARTNERSHIP WITH AOFBeta Sigma Kappa International Honor Society (BSK) has made an initial donation of $50,000 to the American Optometric Foundation (AOF) to endow two new Fellowship programs. The AOF-BSK Fel-lowships will provide support for optometric faculty research and optometric resident research. Additional details are planned for release in 2011.
PETERS LECTURE FUND ESTABLISHEDThere are many giants in optometry, many who have served as the Academy’s President and in other leader-ship roles. Though it is difficult to recognize all the great leaders, there are some who truly have advanced the profession and the public health. Dr. Henry (Hank) Peters is one whose contributions and legacy deserve to be honored now and into the future. The Public Health and Environmental Vision Section have established an annual lecture to recognize Dr. Peters’ many accomplishments to the Academy and the profession. The endowed fund will reside with the Foundation, so please give generously to support the Henry B. Peters Lecture Fund.
KORBS INITIATE NEW DRY EYE FUNDThe Foundation received a $25,000 donation from Drs. Donald Korb & Joan Exford to establish a research and leadership fund in the area of dry eye. At the AOF luncheon in San Francisco, Don Korb praised Dr. Kelly Nichols' recent work as the chair of the International Meibomian Gland Dysfunction Work Group for the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society. He said her work made him proud to be an optometrist, as he announced this lead gift.

ROSENBLOOM FUND ESTABLISHEDNo Ezell Fellow has had a longer-lasting influence than Alfred (Al) Rosenbloom. That is be-cause Dr. Rosenbloom was one of the Foundation’s first Ezell Fellows! His career is marked by stellar accomplishments as a teacher, writer, lecturer and administrator and he is the recipient of numerous awards, including Lifetime Achievement awards from The Chicago Lighthouse and Prevent Blindness America, the Distinguished Service Award from the American Optometric Association, the Migel Medal from the American Foundation for the Blind, and the Carel C. Koch Award from the Academy. The Foundation is proud to have established the Alfred A. Rosenbloom Fund which will provide a Residency or Fellowship in the area of low vision.

To encourage talented persons to pursue full-time careers in independent optometric practice and leadership, one, third year student from every school and college of optometry in the US, Canada, and Puerto Rico, is selected by committee and honored at a reception during Academy.
These outstanding individuals exemplify the highest level of commitment to clinical excellence and the profession of optometry. Each received a
$5,000 fellowship and a travel award to attend the annual meeting, and will be sponsored to attend Academy 2011 Boston where they will help
welcome the next class of Carl Zeiss Vision Fellows.
