The book explains how the psychoanalytic model works and how it contributes to the care of people with mental illness. The book is founded on the psychoanalytic thinking that evolved over the last 120 years and surveys how the psychoanalytic

model has become the basis for almost all psychological treatments, or “talking cures,” for emotional suffering. The author outlines the history of psychoanalysis, answers basic questions, defines the core dimensions of psychodynamic models, and illustrates their clinical utility.

Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5 Disorders (SCID-5-CV), Clinician VersionMichael B. First, M.D., Janet B. W. Williams, Ph.D., Rhonda S. Karg, Ph.D., and Robert L. Spitzer, M.D.

The Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-5, Clinician Version (SCID-5-CV), is a semistructured interview guide for making DSM-5 diagnoses. It is administered by a clinician or trained mental health professional who is familiar with DSM-5 classification and diagnostic criteria. The SCID-5-CV is available in sets of five one-time-use booklets.

The SCID-5-CV can be used:

• To ensure that all of the major DSM-5 diagnoses are systematically evaluated in adults.

• To characterize a study population in terms of current psychiatric diagnoses. For example, diagnostic data that are obtained using the SCID interview can be used by researchers, practitioners, policy makers, and the general public who are interested in prevalence and incidence estimates of psychiatric disorders among certain populations (e.g., depression in patients with diabetes).

• To improve interviewing skills of students in the mental health professions, including psychiatry, psychology, psychiatric social work, and psychiatric nursing. For example, the SCID can provide train-ees with a repertoire of useful questions to elicit information from a patient as the basis for making diagnostic judgments.

A unique and valuable tool, the SCID-5-CV is used to assess and record DSM-5 diagnostic decisions. It will guide the clinician step-by-step through diagnostic decisions using the DSM-5 criteria, which are included in abridged format.

DSM-5® Handbook on the Cultural Formulation InterviewEdited by Roberto Lewis-Fernández, M.D., M.T.S., Neil Krishan Aggarwal, M.D., M.B.A., M.A., Ladson Hinton, M.D., Devon E. Hinton M.D., Ph.D., and Laurence J. Kirmayer, M.D., F.R.C.P.C.

The book provides clinicians with the background and guidance they need to implement the Cultural Formulation Interview (CFI). The Handbook teaches the reader how to conduct a cultural assessment using the CFI, which consists of three types of semistructured interviews. Although the CFI was not designed to be the sole basis for making a clinical diagnosis, it can be used in research and clinical settings to enhance clinical understanding and decision making. The volume presents techniques to help providers situate their work within the context of a patient's culture to enhance communication—not only with those of different cultures but across all clinical encounters. Especially instructive are the supplemental videos that demonstrate application of the CFI components through the use of clinical vignettes.

Manual of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Eighth EditionAlan F. Schatzberg, M.D., and Charles DeBattista, D.M.H., M.D.

This new, eighth edition has been thoroughly updated in recognition of the relentless developments in the field, including the release of new U.S. Food and Drug Administration–-

approved drugs, newly approved uses for existing drugs, and newly identified interactions, dosing guidelines, and documented side effects. As with previous iterations, this edition is logically structured and highly readable. However, the ever-expanding number of available agents and indications mandated the condensing of some sections and the elimination of others, to keep the book from becoming too large to be user-friendly. The resulting volume is DSM-5 compatible, easy-to-use, and practical, with summary tables for quick reference. The book delivers authoritative information in a friendly, collegial style, maintaining the level of excellence readers have come to expect.

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5®)American Psychiatric Association

This new edition of the American Psychiatric Association’s DSM-5®, used by clinicians and researchers to diagnose and classify mental disorders, is the product of more than 10 years of effort by hundreds of international experts in all aspects of mental health. This manual, which creates a common language for clinicians involved in the diagnosis of mental disorders, includes concise criteria intended to facilitate an objective assessment of symptom presentations in a variety of clinical settings—inpatient, outpatient, par-tial hospital, consultation-liaison, clinical, private practice, and primary care.

DSM-5® is the most comprehensive, current, and critical resource for clinical practice available to today’s mental health clinicians and researchers. The information contained in the manual is also valuable to other physicians and health professionals, includ-ing psychologists, counselors, nurses, and occupational and rehabilitation therapists, as well as social workers and forensic and legal specialists. DSM-5® is the most definitive resource for the diagnosis and classification of mental disorders.

The American Journal of Psychiatry is the most widely read psychiatric journal in the world. Published monthly, it is an indispens-able journal for all psychiatrists and other mental health professionals who need to stay on the cutting edge of every aspect of psychia-try. Reviews and overviews help with informa-tion to prepare for recertification and original research provides information on the latest advances in diagnosis, treatment, neurosci-ence, and patient populations.

Highlights:

· The American Journal of Psychiatry’s latest Impact Factor is 13.559 placing it in the top 1% of all scientific, medical, and technical journals indexed by Thomson Scientific.

· The American Journal of Psychiatry (AJP) is again among the top 1% in terms of imme-diacy according to Thomson Scientific’s Im-mediacy Index. This important performance metric is calculated by dividing the number of citations to articles published in a given year by the number of articles published in that year. The Immediacy Index is a good measure of how quickly a given journal’s articles are cited.

· A recent poll conducted by the BioMedical & Life Sciences Division of The Special Libraries Association identified the 100 most influential journals in all of Biology & Medicine over the last 100 years. The American Journal of Psychiatry was among those honored, the only psychiatry/psychology journal represented.

Features:

· AJP in Advance—As part of the Journal’s commitment to bringing the latest research to the field faster, all research articles now appear online in advance of their appear-ance in a print issue. AJP in Advance is up-dated with new articles on the 1st and 15th of each month (or the next business day).

· Treatment in Psychiatry Series—Leading experts provide a hypothetical case vignette on commonly encountered issues in patient care followed by a summary of the relevant research literature, plus offers recommendations of how to proceed with assessment and treatment.

· Clinical Case Conference Series—Complements the Treatment in Psychia-try series by giving additional practice oriented guidance by presenting actual pa-tients (with disguised identities) who pose especially difficult or unique problems in diagnosis and treatment.

· AJP Audio—Each online issue includes a 30-minute downloadable MP3 format pro-gram that contains highlights and selected findings from the issue.

· Residents Journal—Each online issue is also accompanied by a FREE electronic publication produced specifically for psychia-try residents that features instructive cases, perspectives on training and career develop-ment, and discussions of unique clinical or educational programs along with special instructional columns from AJP Editors.

No other psychiatric journal reaches more psychiatrists with greater impact or im-mediacy than The American Journal of Psy-chiatry, the journal that the overwhelming majority of psychiatrists consider essential. Each issue covers topics on:

· Disorders—substance abuse, childhood psychopathology, mood disorders, and personality disorders

· Treatment—psychopharmacology, psycho-therapy, and ECT

· Neuroscience—brain imaging, genetics, and molecular biology

· Patient populations—women, the elderly, children, and veterans

Helping Kids in CrisisManaging Psychiatric Emergencies in Children and AdolescentsEdited by Fadi Haddad, M.D., and Ruth S. Gerson, M.D.

This is a practical, easy-to-use guide for clinicians working with child and adolescent psychiatric emergencies across a range of settings. More and more children struggle with psychiatric symptoms, while access to treatment remains limited, so pediatricians, social workers, school psychologists, guidance counselors, and school nurses often find themselves treating kids in crisis without available child psychiatric consultation. This book provides clinical case examples with concrete tools for assessment, de-escalation, and diagnosis, to help clinicians quickly stabilize the crisis and determine when a trip to the emergency room is necessary.

Psycho-Oncology takes the reader through the predictable emotions and psychological chal-lenges that may be encountered by patients and their families, with neoplastic disorders over the course of their treatment—from diagnosis to end-of-life decisions. The book teaches readers how to practice and become competent in conducting solution-fo-cused therapy, an area of growing interest as the emphasis on brief therapy increases. Organized to show how a solution-focused interview is con-ducted, the book presents the basic model and goes on to apply this model in psychopharma-cology, addiction, supervision and consultation. Transference-Focused Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality DisorderA Clinical GuideFrank E. Yeomans, M.D., Ph.D., John F. Clarkin, Ph.D., and Otto F. Kernberg, M.D.

This is a treatment manual designed for mental health professionals who work with individuals presenting with moderate to severe forms of personality disorder. Although the authors' research has been with patients with a DSM-5 diagnosis of borderline per-sonality disorder (BPD), the book focuses on the broader group of patients with borderline personality organization, expanding the reach and utility of this volume. The authors, who are among the foremost experts in BPD, combine principles of intervention with clinical cases that illustrate the principles as applied in a variety of situations. The clinical knowledge that is imparted by this approach is further developed through online videos that accompany the text.

Phenomenal advances in treatments for borderline pathology have been made over the past 25 years..

INTEGRATED CARE

NEW!

Preventive Medical Care in PsychiatryA Practical Guide for CliniciansEdited by Robert M. McCarron, D.O., Glen Xiong, M.D., Craig R Keenan, M.D., and Henry A. Nasrallah, M.D.

The book is designed to assist psychiatrists and other mental health providers in making the shift from treating mental disorders to treating the holistic needs of people with mental disorders. Individuals with chronic mental illness typically have higher rates of adverse health risk behaviors, such as smoking, poor diet, and lack of physical activity, which puts them at high risk for the development of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Additionally, these individuals frequently lack a primary care physician. By focusing on the knowledge and skills mental health providers need to prevent and detect common medical conditions in their patients, the book enables them to develop models of care that are integrated within individuals and across populations.

Integrated CareWorking at the Interface of Primary Care and Behavioral HealthEdited by Lori E. Raney, M.D.

This is a state-of-the-art text that thoroughly reviews the evidence base and core principles that support integrated care models. As the contributors—all leaders in their field—explain, integrated care has been shown to improve quality and outcomes of mental and physical health care in primary care systems, as well as medical care for patients with severe mental illness in community mental health systems. The book includes full cover-age of key concepts such as population-based care, measurement-based care, and stepped care and emphasizes how health reform initiatives are stimulating rapid dissemina-tion of these models.

This book builds on research from the vastly influential NIMH Collaborative Depression Study (CDS) to provide clinicians with information they can use to assess, diagnose, treat, and understand how their patients will likely fare over the course of their illness. The book highlights the significance of CDS findings on mood disorders, including major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder, with emphasis on clinical course, interventions, and outcomes. Chapters on genetic factors and comorbidities provide critical context, and chapter-ending summaries of clinical implications help to highlight the importance of the CDS findings for clinical practice.

Fatal PausesGetting Unstuck Through the Power of No and the Power of GoStuart C. Yudofsky, M.D.

Fatal Pauses is a fresh and fascinating take on what it means to be "stuck" and how to get "unstuck." Part textbook for mental health professionals and part self-help manual for people who, for a multitude of reasons, find themselves stuck in dysfunctional or unsatisfy-ing relationships, jobs, behavioral patterns, dependencies, and even psychotherapy, this book guides readers through the various manifestations of this condition by presenting and analyzing the case studies of patients in intensive and entertaining detail. It is designed to highlight the richness and uniqueness of human experience, therapeutic promise and poetry, even as it reveals the challenges and frustrations of the dysfunctional behavioral patterns that so many of us share.
