HISTORY
• Production goes back to the 18th century
• Introduced by the British and Irish who settled in Pennsylvania, Maryland & Virginia
• Popularized after the ban on import of rum during the war for Independence
• 1791 George Washington imposed a tax on whiskey because of its increasing popularity
• Led to the whiskey rebellion of 1794
• Bourbon whiskey from Bourbon County, Kentucky made from corn became popular as a result of this
• 1911 more than 370 M Lt. were produced
• Oct. 1919 Congress passed the Volstead Prohibition Act
• Nov. 1920 14th Amendment
• 1933 Prohibition ended after 13 years
• 1964 38th Congress coded the various types of whiskey.

BLENDED WHISKEY• 20% straight whiskey• Addition of neutral spirit and whiskey styles • Neutral spirit “Silent Spirit” • 190° US proof ( 95% v/v ) • Results in lighter & less flavourful whiskey• Accounts for 25% of domestic market

LIGHT WHISKEY • Introduced on 1st July 1972• Distilled at 160° US proof ( 80% v/v )• Stored in used / uncharred oak casks • Bottled at 40% alcohol v/v• Lacks real character ... Used for blending• Park & Tilford American Light

BONDED WHISKEY• Only straight whiskey • Produce of one distiller , bottled at 100° US
proof ( 50 % v/v )• Stored in the warehouse for 4 yrs or till the
distiller wants to withdraw them• Pays a tax to INTERNAL REVENUE• Green stamp in the stopper - bottled in
bond guarantee• JW Dant, Evan Williams White, Old
