Fundamentals SIG Leader
Tom Zillman our Fun SIG leader has a work conflict for our Tuesday night meetings. As a result,
we need a member to step up and replace him for this position. Even if you are new to wood-
working, you could lead this group. Think of the topics of interest and you will find many mem-
bers among us who are knowledgeable and willing to share.
Raffle Table Help Wanted
Norm Musur is our long serving raffle czar but sometimes he has been known to depart for
warmer climes in the winter. He would really like someone to be co-chair for the raffle. See him
and let him know if you are ready and willing.
Da Big Raffle!
As mentioned last month the current raffle item is some-thing everyone can use in their shop. It is a $75.00 Woodcraft gift card. There will be not just one winner but 2 lucky ticket holders. Each will receive a $75.00 gift card. You can then go to Woodcraft and purchase that tool you have been drooling over or an accessory for a tool you already own or some supplies. Tickets for the drawing are $5 each, 3 for $10, available at the February meeting and for members only.

Share Your Tip and Jig Ideas
Wish you could spend a little more time at show and tell explaining your construction tips or jigs?
Well, the show and tell time limits are necessary to make sure we give our presenters adequate
time for their program. Still, there is another avenue left for you to express your ideas. Write an
article for the newsletter with a couple of photos to help illustrate it. If you email it to
[email protected] , I will be glad to include it in a future newsletter.

President’s Sawdust
Tom Sharp, President FVWWC The editorial musings of your president which maybe serious, funny, technical, or philosophical, but hopefully
always entertaining.
Art Linkletter used to say, "Kids say the darndest things". I'm going to add to that statement by saying, salesmen say the darndest things too. My lovely and I are currently in Phoenix AZ as an escape from the frigid climes of home. We had planned to come to this fair city from the begin-ning. I made reservations and then got corralled into one of those sales pitches for listening to why their time share is the best and I should buy one. If I would take two hours out of my life to listen to their sales pitch, I could stay in a resort instead of an express hotel and pay a quarter of the cost. I took the bait. The sales pitch was the morning after we arrived. It started off like you would expect. "Hi, how are you, my name is Magnus, blah blah blah." Magnus hailed from London and had a wonderful English accent. Then came the interesting part. He asked me what my hobbies are. Naturally, I said woodworking for one. Magnus grabbed on to that. "I love woodworking", he says with big eyes as if he had found a lost brother. "That's great", I said. We were now bonded or so I thought. This guy’s got to honest, genuine, and the real deal. He's a woodworker. How could he not be a good guy. I asked him what kind of woodworking he did and he said that he liked to make furniture. "As do I", I said smiling. Magnus and I were going to get along great. I'm start-ing to like time shares already. "So what kind of tablesaw do you have", I queried? "Mine is an old one", he replied. "I don't even know the name of it anymore." Now that could be an honest an-swer. Perhaps it didn't have any label on it and he just didn't know. "Does it still have the fence" I asked? "Oh, I don't use a fence", he said. "My saw just cuts wood". What the hell? He doesn't use a fence? It just cuts wood? What's that got to do with a fence? Maybe I didn't hear him cor-rectly. Better to try a different woodworking topic. "How do you sharpen your chisels Magnus; stones, Tormek, sandpaper or what" I asked? "Oh none of those", he said as he cast his eyes downward over his nose. "Years ago my father gave me his steel. That's the right choice for sharpening". OK, I thought. You at least know one tool for sharpening but you obviously don't know anything about wood tools. This also lowers your credibility from a five to a one. Time for me to see how far this goes. "How about your joinery", I asked. "You like carbide or flat sawn the best?" "Ah, I'm a carbide man myself", he said proudly. "Everyone knows carbide is the strong-est joint". "Righto", I replied, mocking his English accent. I wondered if that was fake too. Eventually, Magnus got through his sales pitch on time shares. I sat with a Cheshire grin on my face the whole way through. Think I bought in?

Eliminate Glue Squeeze-Out
More virtual woodworking ideas. I think this tip is a great way to tame glue
squeeze-out on mortise and tenon joinery. It came from a recent Boib Van Dyke
Fine Woodworking video and his article in issue #198. If you construct projects
with mortise and tenon joints, you are familiar with the glue squeeze-out that oc-
curs when you close the joints. The darn stuff smooshes out and then you need
to wipe away the glue and hope that you don’t leave any traces behind that will
ruin your finish. I have often resorted to a wet rag which the article cautions against—it kinda
works but may leave a glue line in the joint and traces of glue on the adjacent surfaces that will
not accept stain and finish.
So, what is this great idea? Here are the steps Van Dyke recommends:
1. Apply glue only on the cheeks of the mortise and tenons and do so sparingly. Nothing on the
shoulder surfaces.
2. Partially insert the tenon and observe the glue roll that forms outside the mortise. Left alone,
this is what will squeeze out of the joint. (Below left)
3. Use a dry acid brush to remove the glue roll from the tenon. (Below right)
4. Close the joint completely and there should be no squeeze-out. Simple.
5. If somehow there is still a little squeeze-out, you probably used too much glue. Do not wipe it
off. Wait 15 minutes or so until the glue gels up and then remove the glob with a chisel.

The next Scroll Saw SIG next meeting will be Tuesday, February 5, 2019, at 6:30 prior to the club meeting. For the first time, we have a tentative schedule of our SIG topics for the rest of the year:
