Te aconsejamos un tranquilo paseo por el pueblo de Malpica. Piérdete un poco por sus calles, acércate al Puerto, recientemente reformado, asómate a sus miradores y date una vuelta por el paseo marítimo hasta pisar la playa de Area Maior. Merece la pena.

Te resultará interesante, a la vez que instructivo y muy curioso, hacerle una visita a la lonja. El pescado más fresco y el marisco más sabroso subastado a la “poxa”. Una práctica que hoy en día se sigue manteniendo frente a los avances tecnológicos. Sin duda la “poxa” más vistosa es la de las cinco de la tarde en la que los barcos del día subastan una gran variedad de especies.

A visit to the fish market makes for an intriguing, eye-opening and most unusual outing. The freshest fish and tastiest seafood are auctioned off in the “poxa”, a practice which is maintained to this day, resisting technological advances.The most colourful poxa unquestionably takes place at five in the afternoon, when the day's ships auction off a wide variety of produce.

La villa de Malpica destaca por su puerto, lugar ideal para observar la entrada y salida de los barcos, envueltos por el griterío de las gaviotas y las subastas de la lonja... También se presta para entrar en alguna de las tascas o restaurantes a saborear pescado y marisco recién sacados del mar. En el siglo XVII era uno de los puertos balleneros más sobresalientes, sin embargo hoy sus descargas se centran en el pescado de bajura y los mariscos.

En el puerto podrás sumergirte en el ambiente marinero, ver como las rederas reparan los aparejos y los marineros realizan las descargas de pescado y marisco. Existen numerosos miradores desde donde podrás disfrutar de excepcionales vistas del golfo Ártabro o las Islas Sisargas.

Cerca del puerto, en la Casa del Pescador, es visita obligada el Museo Urbano Lugrís, donde encontrarás murales de este pintor surrealista de inspiración profundamente marinera. La flora y fauna marina, el paisaje y las leyendas del mar son la inspiración de la mayoría de sus obras malpicanas.

Nature blesses us with her fruits

Its port is the primary feature of Malpica, the perfect place to watch the ships come and go, amid the screeching of the gulls and the auctions of the fish market... It also invites visitors to step inside one of the bars or restaurants to sample the freshly landed fish and seafood. In the 17th century it was one of the leading whale-fishing ports, although today it deals mainly in coastal catches and seafood.

The port allows you to plunge into a seafaring atmosphere, watch the redeiras mend the nets and the sailors offload their fish and seafood. There are numerous lookouts offering amazing views of the Gulf of Ártabro and the Sisargas Islands.

Close by the port, the Casa del Pescador houses the Urbano Lugrís Museum, an unmissable visit featuring the artist's surrealist murals, which draw heavily on seafaring themes. The marine flora and fauna, the landscape and legends of the sea provide the inspiration for most of his Malpica-based works.

Cormoranes y gaviotas son los auténticos dueños y en sus acantilados encuentran su hábitat perfecto.

Discover the Sisargas Islands, a small archipelago rich in aquatic flora and fauna, and a nesting site for a number of endangered species (the common guillemot, the lesser black-backed gull and the black-legged kittiwake) which breed on the islands. Cormorants and seagulls are the true owners, finding the perfect habitat on the cliffs here.

If you are drawn to the sea then you will find a range of appealing options in Malpica, such as diving, surfing, canoeing and sailing.

Verás playas de marea con arena limpia y paisajes únicos: As Torradas, Os Riás, San Miro o A Rega -última playa virgen del municipio-.

Más familiares son Area Maior de Malpica -en pleno casco urbano- y la de Canido a continuación. Completan la oferta de arenales las playas de Seaia, Beo –abrigada del viento del nordeste-, Ceiruga y Barizo.

Además encontrarás interesante visitar Pedra da Arca, uno de los dólmenes megalíticos más grandes de Galicia. Tiene cámara poligonal y corredor orientado al este. En sus proximidades, si mantienes alerta los sentidos, podrás encontrar varias mámoas.

So much to see so close at hand

Here you will find tidal beaches of pristine sand and unique landscapes: As Torradas, Os Riás, San Miro and A Rega, the last undeveloped beach in the borough.

More familiar strands include Area Maior in the centre of Malpica itself and Canido further on. The shoreline is completed by the beaches of Seaia, Beo sheltered from the north-easterly wind, Ceiruga and Barizo.

Another noteworthy site is Pedra da Arca, one of the largest megalithic dolmens in Galicia. It has a polygonal chamber and eastward-facing corridor. Nearby, if you keep your wits about you, you may spot some of the tumuli.

Countryside routes to lose yourself at leisure

We offer you 13 different routes to cover on foot or by bike.

1. Urbano Lugrís. A route which invites you to explore the world of Lugrís in the village of Malpica.

2. Old Town. Taking in a number of the most distinctively seafaring sites of Malpica.

3. From Area Maior to San Hadrián. Running along the beaches of Area Maior and Seaia as far as the Ermita.

4. From Malpica to Pedra da Arca. A route leading to the megalithic dolmen of Pedra da Arca.

5. From Leduzo to Taraio. A trail of roadside crosses, mills and manor houses.

6. From Aldeola to Rego dos Muíños. Taking in the Croa do Castro, the oldest stone cross, or cruceiro, in the borough and the Pazo de Loroxo manor house, before ending at the bay of Ensenada dos Muíños.

7. From Xesteira to Cambre. A circular route through woodlands of pine, scrub, caves, cliffs and tidal beaches.

Te sugerimos una visita interesante: el Ecomuseo Forno do Forte, un conjunto recuperado para mostrar cómo era la vida y actividad diaria de los alfareros. También es interesante visitar en sus inmediaciones otros antiguos hornos de leña para cocer las piezas de barro: Forno da Costa, Forno da Lucha y Forno dos Mouróns, o el conjunto etnográfico de la Abellariza.

We also propose an intriguing visit: the Forno do Forte Ecomuseum, a restored site which shows what the life and daily

work of a potter was like. A visit to the other nearby ancient wood-

fired kilns used to fire the earthenware is also well worth

considering: Forno da Costa, Forno da Lucha and Forno dos Mouróns, as well as the ethnographic site at Abellariza.

Si visitas Malpica tienes como parada obligatoria Buño, cuna de la alfarería. Una tradición centenaria que recoge la herencia del pasado y moldea la nobleza del barro, desde hace siglos, con manos sabias que convierten en obras de arte todo lo que tocan. Agua, barro y fuego testimonian el trabajo diario de artesanos que muestran, día a día, su fértil creatividad.

Es importante destacar que Buño es el pueblo alfarero más relevante de Galicia. Mantiene viva su tradición con más de 20 alfareros que continúan elaborando piezas tradicionales y han ampliado su arte con piezas modernas de gran calidad y un desarrollado sentido estético.

Encontrarás numerosas tiendas y talleres donde poder adquirir sus obras. Incluso en algunos no tienen inconveniente en que los visitantes puedan ser testigos de la labor del alfarero en su torno, trabajando las piezas que más adelante adornarán nuestros hogares.

Discover a treasure around every corner

If you visit Malpica then a trip to Buño, the home of pottery, is a must. An ages-old tradition drawing on the heritage of the past, shaping the noble clay for centuries with knowing hands turning all they touch into art. Water, clay and fire bear witness to the daily efforts of c r a f t smen who day by day demonstrate their fertile creativity.

It is worth noting that Buño is the most important pottery village in Galicia. Its tradition remains alive, with more than 20 potters still producing traditional works, while extending their artistic range through modern pieces of enormous quality and a highly developed aesthetic sense.

There are numerous stores and workshops where you can purchase their wares. Some of them are even happy for visitors to watch the potters at their wheels, crafting the pieces which will later decorate our homes.

Te aconsejamos asistir a la Feria de Alfarería que se celebra en la primera quincena de agosto. Es una “semana grande” en la que el conjunto de los artesanos y artesanas de Buño exhiben sus mejores piezas. Es una ocasión excepcional para asistir a una cocedura tradicional en el horno de leña del Ecomuseo “Forno do Forte”.

We recommend a visit to the Feria de Alfarería, the pottery fair held in the first fortnight of August. It is a "big week" during which all the craftspeople of Buño show off their finest works. An exceptional opportunity to attend a traditional firing or cocedura at the wood-fired kiln of the “Forno do Forte” Ecomuseum.

En los siglos XVI y XVII se constata la primera referencia escrita a la alfarería de Buño (Cédula Real de 1688-compromiso de los alfareros de Buño y Leiloio para la fabricación de mil cuatrocientos caños para la traída de agua de la fuente del mercado de A Coruña), no obstante es muy probable que el origen sea bastante anterior.

La alfarería vivió su edad de oro en los siglos XVIII y XIX, cuando más de 70 alfareros desarrollaban su trabajo en Buño. En 1708 el Padrón Calle Hita recogía que las familias de alfareros doblaban en número a las de agri-cultores. En esa época la producción se centraba en útiles de cocina: cazuelas, jarras, bandejas, tazas, fuentes, platos, etc.

Los tiempos han cambiado y los artesanos, sin abandonar sus raíces ancestrales, se han ido adaptando a las nuevas corrientes y en la actualidad podemos ver juntas soberbias piezas de barro de formas tradicionales y obras modernas, tanto en diseño como en colorido, fruto del renovado sentido estético de las nuevas generaciones de la alfarería.

Follow the pathway of established artists

The first written reference to the pottery of Buño dates to the 16th and 17th centuries (the Royal Warrant of 1688, an undertaking by the potters of Buño and Leiloio to manufacture one thousand four hundred pipes to carry water from the market fountain in A Coruña), although the tradition very probably dates back much earlier.

Pottery enjoyed its golden age in the 18th and 19th centuries, when more than 70 potters were working in Buño. In 1708 the Calle Hita municipal register recorded that there were twice as many families employed in pottery as in farming. At that time the output focused on kitchenware: casseroles, jugs, trays, cups, dishes, plates, etc.

Times have changed, and the craftsmen, without abandoning their ancestral roots, have gradually adapted to new trends, and these days you will find outstanding earthenware works in traditional forms alongside more modern pieces in terms of both their design and their colouring, the product of the renewed aesthetic sense of new generations of potters.

La oferta veraniega se amplía con la Romería de San Hadrián (declarada de interés turístico gallego) donde los fieles llevan al santo en procesión por las playas y el monte hasta la ermita del cabo; el Festival Nordestazo Rock -cada vez con más presencia en el panorama musical- organizado por la A. C. Tralla o la Festa Galega que nos ofrece varios días en los que puedes escuchar música interpretada y creada por artistas gallegos.

If you are looking for atmosphere then Malpica has a huge variety to offer, above all in the summer months when the beachside terraces are filled with people keen to enjoy the evening.

The streets with the largest concen-tration of nightlife are Caldeirón and Ramona Criado. Some bars are right on the seafront promenade, with terraces looking out to sea and the Sisargas Islands. All of them offer you the chance to enjoy the nightlife of Malpica, listening to the most varied range of musical styles and dancing with the sea in full view.

The summertime also features the Romería de San Hadrián pilgrimage (one of Galicia's listed cultural events), during which the saint's devotees walk in procession over the beaches and hillsides up to the hermitage on the cape, the Nordestazo Rock Festival, an increasingly notable event on the musical landscape, organised by A. C. Tralla, and the Festa Galega which over a number of days features works performed and written by Galician musicians.

Y para los pequeños de la casa también hay actividades en las que pueden participar: rutas a pie, deportes, teatro, magia, cómicos y noches de cine.

Special mention should be made of the Pottery Fair in Buño where you can view and purchase wonderful pieces created by the local master craftsman, as well as the famed Fiestas del Mar in Malpica, at which hundreds of boats make out to sea in honour of Our Lady of Carmel or Virgen del Carmen, the patroness of Spanish seafarers, in a maritime procession out to the Sisargas Islands.

Meanwhile there are plenty of activities in which the youngest visitors can take part: walking, sport, theatre, magic, comedians and cinema evenings.

As you will see, Malpica has plenty in store for you. A world of sensations to experience alone or in company, the only recommendation being to make sure your senses are switched on and ready to soak up the sea breeze and the sound of the gulls, and to share wonderful experiences which will paint your summer in a different colour, with the satisfaction when you return home that you have enjoyed yourself like never before.
